Broadfern, do games w Nintendo Switch Console & Accessory Prices Are Going Up In The US
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

The weird part is apparently Canada got hit by this as well.

I’d be curious what those “market conditions” are that screw over our northern neighbors too 🤔

yggstyle, (edited )

The market conditions are nobody kicking Nintendo’s lawyers in the teeth and telling them to piss off… regardless of jurisdiction.

Follow that up with the consumer base clamoring for a gimpsuit shaped like the switch 2 and you get this result.

“Yes corporate daddy, punish me harder”

Edit: it would appear some people are unfamiliar with Nintendo’s rather questionable actions. Or their lawyers are on Lemmy. One of those.

LettyWhiterock,
@LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world avatar

No dude your comment just makes no sense.

yggstyle,

I can break it down:

Why is this happening to us (the consumer)?

Asked by the consumer who has broken records buying the switch 2 with the batshit insane clause: “We can brick your console for any reason and are denying your rights to how and where you can sell your purchased games.”

That’d be the gimpsuit.

Shall I detail the number of times nintendont has overstepped it’s legal rights and trampled on those of developers, consumers, and frequently their own employees?

Nintendo’s lawyers know no boundaries. They frequently get apologists making excuses for them while they force their will on whomever they please. What they need is a solid kick in the teeth and to be told to fuck right off.

Why are they jacking prices up? Why are they inserting assinine clauses in user agreements?

Because people just love the abuse apparently. That’s certainly what the market appears to be saying: “Yes daddy N. punish me harder.”

I believe that summarizes the intent of my original statement sufficiently.

I didn’t think it required that much thought… but apparently I was mistaken.

LettyWhiterock,
@LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world avatar

When all you end up posting comes off as nonsensical ramblings, yeah explanation is needed so people can actually understand you. Otherwise it just looks like nonsensical ramblings.

yggstyle,

Agree to disagree, I suppose. The OP could use a colon and perhaps a small edit for clarity. That’s a far cry from nonsensical ramblings. But I cannot speak for your ability to digest a post made quickly - so if that’s how it was received: I imagine the explanation should have been sufficient. Your response suggests otherwise. My point was made, and clarified, which to me is sufficient. If you can’t work though it - that’s unfortunate but acceptable.

LettyWhiterock,
@LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world avatar

No, the original comment just did not make any sense to begin with.

commander,

I’m guessing they haven’t fully siloed the Canadian supply chain from the US one, it may not be worth it yet to fully silo them off onto separate shipping, packaging, and support channels

carotte,

Nintendo Forced to Raise Price of Console due to Thinking of Bigger Number

caseofthematts,

We’ve always been affected by American prices of things. Some things fly under the radar and will be slightly cheaper here, but for the most part, the prices here are matched market price of the US, despite having a weaker dollar.

I can’t imagine anyone would want to buy new games or old consoles for these insane prices, but then the Switch 2 did crazy numbers, so what the fuck do I know?

Iwata made Nintendo loveable.

frenchfryenjoyer,
@frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world avatar

I feel like since his passing Nintendo games have just become so bland and corporate feeling. idk if it’s just me and I’m getting old but something about the magic is missing in newer Nintendo games that was prominent in older titles

TheOctonaut,

Yeah it’s the old thing

Iwata was a playful public face for the company. He also had the gamer’s and developer’s perspective in things, he wasn’t just a guy in suit to make sure that lines go up and all the investors can clap their hands. He had a more consumer-oriented perspective in mind along with Reggie. When Nintendo made operating loss, instead of laying off staff and blaming others, he owned it and temporarily sliced his salary. The world of gaming needs more people like Iwata, and the words he said are more relevant than ever.

I should really pick up a copy of “Ask Iwata”

RightHandOfIkaros,

So should Nintendo.

As a Linux gamer the idea of unauthorized software is absolutely absurd. Also spending billions on “security” to make sure only approved games are played then approving slop.

Korhaka, do games w Nintendo Updates Its User Agreement To Crack Down On Emulation

But I didn’t agree to their user agreement

notgivingmynametoamachine, do games w Nintendo Updates Its User Agreement To Crack Down On Emulation

laughs in steam deck You know, I didn’t really have a lot of interest in emulating old Nintendo games, but now I think I’ll do it just because Nintendo doesn’t want me to.

Thank god I own a PC and not a corpo platform.

Guidy, do games w Nintendo Updates Its User Agreement To Crack Down On Emulation

At this point if you’re buying their stuff, you’re the reason they get away with it and you’re the problem because you can’t control them, you can only control you… and you didn’t.

Phoenicianpirate, do games w Nintendo Updates Its User Agreement To Crack Down On Emulation

Joke is on them. I have had every NES and SNES rom ever made. I need to make sure i have every N64 rom (even if I don’t play that often) and now every GameCube.

I still don’t have a Wii emulator or even looked into that.

When I have the time I will try to download as much stuff as possible and make a torrent file. I’ll share it in a PM.

Dolphin, the gamecube emulator is also a fairly complete wii emulator. The wii was basically 2 gamecubes duct-taped together.

Phoenicianpirate,

I have dolphin, thank you for mentioning that.

Tigeroovy, do games w Nintendo Updates Its User Agreement To Crack Down On Emulation

Honestly, I’m an advocate for emulation and game preservation and all that, but I’m surprised this is only now the case. I don’t have the nerve to try to hack my device if it’s the currently being supported platform. If they’ve already abandoned it then it’s fair game but the currently active console with your current actual information on there that gets regular updates? You’re just playing with fire.

It’s like taking it upon yourself to make an “HD remake” of the IPs owned by famously stringent companies who aren’t afraid to put the hammer down on these things.

twocupsofsugar,
@twocupsofsugar@lemmy.world avatar

I generally agree, I only really hack consoles that aren’t being supported anymore, but I don’t like how over-reaching the end user agreement is sounds like it’s likely to be abused

their device. Your own device, such as a Steam Deck, you don’t have to hack, you can run anything on it however you like.

Preventing me from accessing Nintendo network and store is one thing. Somehow bricking my physical device, that I own? Fuck them

jsomae, do games w Nintendo Updates Its User Agreement To Crack Down On Emulation

I don’t really see how the new agreement is any more restrictive than the previous one?

I don’t buy physical objects and then agree to not own them. I don’t even like that shit with digital goods. I don’t need someones authorization to “allow” me to use what I buy as I see fit. If buying isn’t owning than pirating isn’t stealing.

kevin2107, do games w Nintendo Updates Its User Agreement To Crack Down On Emulation

Steam over here just open sourcing their full ass os and you can literally do anything you want. Best money ive spent

thermal_shock,

Same. Possibly getting a second

kevin2107,

I have 2 because i got the white led. dunno what to do with the 2nd

derpgon,

And the only digital store so far that directly allows sharing your collection with your family (yes, I call my long time friends a family). I mean, it am sure they are winning the long game.

Meanwhile EA got their like third remake which STILL sucks, Epic trying to buy exclusivity in PC market, Ubisoft launcher is just a shit stain that nobody wants to use directly and is forced on them, and the rest (Bethesda, Rockstar, Battle.net) are not really worth considering as a store, rather than just DRM-checking slop nobody really needs.

kevin2107,

Yeah the amount of games I buy and never even play, its ridiculous lol, big ass back log and can play anything I want under the sun. If my deck can’t handle it then moonlight and streaming from my rig can.

ArchmageAzor,

Valve remains goated because they’re not a public company. They set out to satisfy their customers, not their shareholders.

kittenzrulz123,

Granted 90% of the components they used in SteamOS are readily available open source components, the componets they did make they did also open source (such as gamescope).

kevin2107,
