Aceticon, do gaming w Deflated

I game only on the PC and favor buying games from GOG over Steam, partly since one of the former’s core selling points is no-DRM (also you can directly download the games with no need for using GOG Galaxy and play offline for ever and ever), so I’ll just check the user reviews before buying and if there is some kind of mandatory account creation somebody will have complained and I will simply not buy that game (tends to be a pretty aware crowd on those subjects over there).

I’m reading here of people buying it and then not playing the game because of this and thinking: people doing that makes the decision to add this kind of thing a can’t-lose for the game makers - either way they get paid for the game and the with most people they do some extra money by selli gbtheir private information whilst for other the don’t but they still got a game sale, same as if they had not added this crap.

Best to check a few user reviews before buying and denying them a purchase if they’ve added such crap to the game, IMHO, as that changes the ROI equation and can make it a net negative to have this in a game.

@Maven@lemmy.world avatar

This looks good! I wishlisted it and I’m excited to try it out! I love media with sarcastic narrators in all forms.

Mary and Max, Doom Patrol s1, The Stanley Parable obviously… I’m excited to hopefully add this to my list

Road_Warrior_10,

Thank you, can’t wait for you to try it and I hope it lives up to those. I love The Stanley Parable and I’m trying to do my own thing in that tone, (the final part of the game really gets unhinged)

DingoBilly, do gaming w Deflated

This isn’t really that much of an issue… As others have said, if you don’t want to give your details just use fake info.

People sometimes seem to give up if they hit any resistance at all to their actions.

mods_are_assholes,

I’d rather just refund it, fuck rewarding a dev team that resorts to this.

DingoBilly,

I honestly don’t get it. It’s such an extremist view for something that’s insignificant.

You paid for a game you’re excited for, and then because you have to sign up for 30 seconds you’d rather get upset, and then spend a longer amount of time refunding the game?

Maybe people here are being hyperbolic but I honestly can’t see people refunding the game because of this.

mods_are_assholes,

If you keep rewarding the bad behavior of others, you have only yourself to blame if they continue to behave badly.

I shouted, literally shouted at my friends for buying the Oblivion Horse Armor and WARNED them the world they were creating, and I was fucking right on every fuckdamn point.

But they laughed at me then, and you laugh at me now, and the world gets shittier and shittier every day.

DingoBilly,

Games are better than they’ve ever been, including the ones that force you to make accounts.

Micro transactions have largely gone down the cosmetic route or season pass route, both of which I’m fine with.

I honestly don’t see the issue. If anything, games are better now because they can make more money from whales and discount the game for others.

AceFuzzLord, do gaming w What even is a game if you're not paying real money for "pulls"?

Only time I’ve ever spent money for in game items was back when I was doing gøøg|e surveys and a certain game had 99¢ pull ticket things. Otherwise, I’ve never done it and will never do it willingly again.

wizardbeard, do gaming w There was beauty in the simplicity
@wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

People forget, you never owned the games you bought, physical cartridge or not. The instruction booklets state that you bought a license. It’s the bullshit argument console manufacturers use/used to go after emulation developers.

Having a copy of the game that can’t be fucked with by errant updates to the game files or by updates to the device you use to run it is a wonderful thing, but don’t lie to yourselves about the legality of ownership. That’s been a busted clusterfuck for longer than most users on here have been alive.

reMaster17,

Scott Ross is a Youtuber who has always been vocal about game publisher making games unplayable by closing their servers. Lately he is gathering information about the legality of this practice worldwide to find the best country/state union to fight it legally because come the end of March the game The Crew will be shut down by Ubisoft but has still a very big active playerbase that might be able to move things forward by contacting consumer rights organisations here in Europe. Just finished persona 5 and persona 3 reload , I heard there will be a p2 remake so I’ll wait for that (Still haven’t played p4 tho).

Not true for Final Fantasy. They made a prequel/sidequel of FF1 called Strangers of Paradise, and it was actually really good.

GladiusB,
@GladiusB@lemmy.world avatar

Stranger of Paradise is good? It is mocked by the FF community and even within it’s own game. That is a FF staple though.

I would say the job leveling tree was what was intended in Tactics or FFXIV, but the rest is really not that great. The battle system is no different than FF7 Remake. The story is not really engaging. It’s was fun for a few weeks. If it’s at a discount. Sure.

Kiosade,

I had a blast with a couple friends. I’m not saying it’s Shakespeare, but it wasn’t bad like people who only ever saw the trailers think it is.

Either way, the fact they tried something new means they didn’t forget about FF1, and technically FF2 if you played enough of the DLC 😉

I don’t know how the original Megami Tensei games were, but I’m really enjoying the Kyūyaku Megami Tensei remake on the SNES.

Edit: Wait, does the MSX game count as the original, or the FC games?

shundi82,

Back in the day I’d started with SMT3 and somehow never felt like going back further (1st person dungeon crawler never sounded appealing - so I’ve only ever made an exception for Strange Journey Redux).

But I feel like I’ve experienced it all first hand including the more niche entries + history thanks to Marsh. So just in case you feel curious:

youtu.be/PrZT68yI81o?si=vfwMcKm5o3apDZdO

Maultasche,

Great to see that there’s a video on the MSX game. Maybe I’ll try the game after I’m done with the other 7 main games.

Hearts of Iron
Europa Universalis
Sid Meyer’s Civilization
Armored Core (with a bonus freebie title)

Oiconomia,

Civ has a lot of old fans since civ 1 or 2 that just buy and play any new civ game that comes out. I had: Civ 1 Civ 2 + Addons Call to Power (which was no official civ) Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri Civ 4 + Addons Freeciv Civ 5 + Addons Civ: Beyond Earth Civ 6 + Addons Unciv

TheAlbatross,

So does Armored Core, Yakuza, Final Fantasy, Fallout and a few other of the series posted here but I’m here to make jokes not accurate observations about various niche gaming communities

Monster Hunter World. I‘d kill for a DLSS3 and FSR3 mod for this game, I want better AA and frame gen so bad. I tried FSR3 in Skyrim and Starfield and it‘s mindblowingly good, so smooth.

Helldivers 2, Trackmania 2020, rounds, lethal company, and a little bit of Splitgate. Mostly playing with friends in each.

astanix, do games w How Do You Deal With Thumb Stick Drift?

I deal with it by warranty replacement if the controller is still within warranty or buying a new one. I just have accepted the fact that controllers are replaceable items in my life.

XeroxCool, do edc w QA tech for food packaging company.

I think I have 15 of those flashlights now. Several reds for astronomy, several whites stashed around in cars and backpacks, a few uv, and a blue and green because why not. My EDC is an olight i1r on my keychain since it’s smaller, rechargeable, and only needed randomly, but those compact AA lights are so convenient either when packing for an exact activity or using in an emergency. I store them with rechargeable batteries but like that I can use a standard battery on the fly too, if needed.

For everyone else, they’re generic flashlights I find on ebay. The head is focusable (o-ring slider) from a 60+° circle with smooth output down to some very tight beam that projects the grid lines of the LED chip - and a hair above that focus you can project just the lead wire. Half-pressing the tail button switches between bright/medium/dim/strobe.

Mango,

Yeah we use them here to check for print errors. The high CRI is nice but unnecessary. What’s good is how smooth the diffusion is! Very good for checking ink adhesion in our films. I love how the LED shape is projected. 😁. I found out about the strobe by accident.

BabyVi, do gaming w Sometimes going back for a replay is a shock

Modern games with simplified graphics have a similar phenomena. Battlebit is a good example, after awhile your brain stops noticing the blocky models.

Stylized art is so much longer lasting than attempts to be cutting edge. It’s the reason why Windwaker looks better now than the other Zelda games of its era.

trigonated,

Same with something like Cruelty Squad. Feels like an assault on your eyes at first but it’s amazing how quick you can get used to it making it feel “normal”.
