Thank you for putting so much effort into these posts. I rarely comment but I always read them. It feels like reading an informal short review of a random game every day, like having a friend telling me what they played the day before. Sometimes I even add the game to my wishlist.

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I’m glad you like my posts! My goal was to introduce people to a new game every day. I have way too many games in my Steam library and I’ve barely played a quarter of them, so this forces me to try something new every day and share it with others.

SwordInStone, do games w Random Screenshots of my Games #37 - Call of Cthulhu

I admire the effort you put into these posts. Thanks for the info about the discount, I played the pirated copy and am fine with paying $3 for this now.

I remember having been disappointed about the game as a terrible Lovecraft adaptation, but an ok game.

If you didn’t like it and want something I considered a good Lovecraft adaptation try Conarium.

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I apparently have Conarium in my library already! I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah, Call of Cthulhu is not really a Lovecraftian game. You could easily substitute any other creature and it would still play out the same. The only element of the old RPG game that really carried over is the sanity level. The tabletop game would have you roll for sanity checks every now and then and basically track your gain or loss of sanity, which could alter your character as the game progressed.

That, and the eldritch creatures, are about all these games share in common with each other, and both are very loosely based on the Lovecraft short story. So it’s about as far removed from an H.P. Lovecraft work as you can get.

Zahille7,

Conarium is an interesting one. It’s a bit more walking sim than RPG, but there are different endings. I went through a Lovecraft video game kick a couple years ago too, lol.

I do want to try Old Gods Rising, but I just haven’t yet for whatever reason.

Maestro,

Thanks for the suggestion. Conarium is also in the sale now, so I bought it. Thanks!

SwordInStone,

Let me know how you like it

It’s a solid RPG/adventure game. The setting is pretty compelling. I can recommend if you’re into the genre.

Thanks for the in-depth review.

Zahille7,

Same. I played it on Game Pass a couple years ago and actually got really into it. I had to make myself hunker down for the first encounter with the other, though.

I played it when it released and quite enjoyed it. I don’t remember much of it though, it might be time to give it another go.

Dude AW2 is fuckin excellent. I will admit to getting stuck on (what I imagine is) the final stand for Agent (can’t remember her name) by the lake. I went back to playing cyberpunk again because I’ve been playing it way too much.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

i need to get back into Cyberpunk. I started but had to uninstall it for space.

TheFriar,

Oh man. If you haven’t played the DLC and if you haven’t played since the big update, you def need to.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I plan on picking up the DLCs at some point. Probably not until early next year though due to my financial situation

TheFriar,

I’m very excited for you

popping in just to let you know i bought them today and i started my 4th playthrough today!

TheFriar,

Hell yes! Dude I still have been replaying it. And finding new stuff. That DLC, too! It’s so damn good. Glad you’re enjoying it! And I’m glad you remembered to let me know hah! I wish there were more games like this.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I saved your comment just so i could remember to update you. The game i don’t know if it’s the nature of the story or what, but Alan Wake 2 i can’t seem to want to leave. There’s just so much love and care put into it that everytime i go into it, i notice a new thing i didn’t before, whether it’s a little detail like the pages in the subway or a foreshadowing i missed the first time. I love it

AW2 baby 🙌

This game is pretty demanding on steam deck, and I never got it to run in a way that was satisfying. If you have a more powerful PC, I’d try using moonlight to stream it instead

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I ended up installing the FSR 3 mod for it, which helped performance a bit. The Steam Deck is my only gaming device though so i sadly can’t use moonlight

I missed that you’ve started on Alan Wake 2 now, but I’m glad you’ve got it running somewhat acceptably! It’s a very demanding game, when I first played it I didn’t have my new PC so I’m intimately familiar with struggling to be able to run it.

I’m glad you spotted the signs, I love the work on all the signs and graffiti in the dark place.

How are you liking the game so far?

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Loving it. I played a little bit on launch but put it on the shelf due to the performance (hoping updates would help) and I felt a little iffy on it due to how Alan was portrayed and the far more survival horror like gameplay. But since picking it up again it’s grown on me. I think if put against the First One/American Nightmare I don’t think I could pick a favorite. I love both for different reasons

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

It’s become one of my favourite games of all time, I think it’s a masterpiece. I love the Remedy connected universe, and as someone who played and loved Max Payne back in the day I got a huge nostalgia kick from the cameos in AW2. When you first see Casey in the Max Payne 1 outfit I squealed.

I also think Alice’s actress is absolutely killing it and am surprised she didn’t get more recognition.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

up until recently Alan Wake was the only Remedy game i played. I picked up control and loved it and then recently played through Max Payne. I think it’s evolved from Alan Wake being my favorite game too Remedy being my favorite game studio. It makes me excited seeing how all these things connect together.

I am now reading every goddamn one of these you write. If only the other screenshot posters would put forth your respect and effort, we could have an honest gaming journal going.

GriffinClaw,

Honestly? I like both the screenshot poster.

The current OP’s posts I tend to skim over, (unless its a game I already played, like this one) cause spoilers. . The other poster has less spoilery posts that I like to read more often (specially the ones he plays with his friends). . To each there own¯_(ツ)_/¯

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you! I try to avoid spoilers in mine. I usually use Lemmy’s built in spoiler feature when it’s though inevitable or i really want to share it, but i just recently found out that not every client does spoilers the same way so i think i’ll have to think up some other idea

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I usually give a warning in advance that spoilers are upcoming and to skip the next paragraph if you don’t want to read them, then do the spoiler tag for an entire paragraph. That way, even if the spoiler tag doesn’t work, people know to skip the next paragraph to avoid it. Sometimes I’ll even do a full-caps “END OF SPOILERS HERE” to catch eyes and help people skip over them.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what I ended up doing for my Alan Wake II post last night because there was just a lot to talk about with the ending. I figured in clients that don’t support Lemmy’s built in spoiler system though the ::: at the end will tell them where the spoilers end

cobysev, (edited )
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I’m actually very careful to avoid spoilers in my posts. Sure, I get pretty far into the meat of the gameplay before I end my post… but I do my best to avoid any big reveals that might ruin the game for interested players. And I’ve never revealed the ending to a game.

At best, I’ve posted my speculation for the direction a game’s plot might be headed, based on my incomplete gaming session. But I made it clear it was just a personal guess.

My intent is to get people invested in the story, so when I leave off, they’ll want to go check it out and see what happens next. Besides, some of the best screenshots are from the action in the middle of gameplay. I can’t play 15 mins of a game and expect to make a solid post about it; I need to have some sense of what the game is about, and that requires a bit more exploration into the plot.

Since you’re familiar with Control, you’ll probably notice I left out some pretty big details from nearly the start of the game. You gotta have some unknown plot elements, or else I’m just narrating the first hour of the game, and that’s not fun when you actually go to play it for the first time.

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think I’ve posted this here yet, but I’ve actually been compiling all these posts into a separate blog. As much time and effort as I’ve been putting into them, I’d hate for them to get wiped if this community goes down, or heaven forbid, I got booted by a mod, etc. So you can either follow my posts here in /c/games, or check them out on my blog. I upload them at the same time, so it doesn’t matter where you go to read them.
