Such a shame more games don’t use this. It worked for PSO because fights were relatively drawn out/telegraphed, so there was always a chance to build up/slow down the music.
I wonder if AI could get used to dynamically generate a transition between battle/overworld themes. Or at least, if the composer makes one and use AI to make all necessary versions.
Some people have fun by trolling. Some people have fun by winning. Online games are meant to be played with friends if one doesn’t want to encounter toxicity.
I believe that is called having friends. Not clones of yourself. I’ve made plenty of friends online that we just played a game together and when we were done with the game we never talked to each other again. Played with some friends raiding in wow for years and at the end we were just done. It’s the cycle of gaming friends.
And my irl friends don’t always play the same games but they are not “friends” they are friends. We have different ideas of what types of games are fun.
Depends on the game. Chess is 0% based on luck, but in i.e: Age of Empires II the randomness of the starting map affects a lot in the outcome of the game. It’s not like you beat your opponent fully thanks to your skills. It’s more having fun discovering the map each time and be more competitive in the endgame.
People are ignoring that just the act of playing the game can be fun. On top of that, getting better yourself or pulling off certain maneuvers can be fun, or even appreciating what the opponents are doing. I had a lot of fun playing rocket league with a friend, even if outmatched, and getting scored on an opponent who pulled off an aerial into top corner made me appreciate what they just did.
Maybe also take a page from dwarf fortress players: Losing is fun!
The difference to be is when people start whining because you’re not playing the “meta”, or start yelling at teammates when they make a mistake. Even if you’re all about climbing the ranks, there’s fun and polite ways to guide people without ruining the experience for everyone.
Valorant in a nutshell. Play Spike Rush or Swift Play to warm up and get better. People on mic or in All chat saying things like “tryhard!” as if the point of the game isn’t to try to win.
Ugh misread your comment and went on a fallout 2 rant. Woops. Totally agree with you! The early fallout games were excellent, and i think the only good one since the IP got picked up is new Vegas
Can I hear your fallout 2 rant anyway? I only played the modern ones, and nearly totally ignored the strategy involved in VATS in favor of just shooting enemies in the head myself.
Ha! Totally! Fallout 2 is an underrated gem of a game, the amount of content in a single city (new reno) is staggering. It’s funny, difficult, at times nonsensical, and arguably my favorite game in the series. Nothing about it is perfect, but it feels so right.
I don’t want to give too many details in case i spoil it, but the game is really something else. I don’t think any game in the series has been as unhinged since fallout 2. It is 2d isometric and uses an action point system, so be aware of that, but man is it wild. I think new vegas is the closest to really capturing the essence, but there’s a certain tone that is missing from the new games. I also strongly dislike the nonstop shoot on sight gameplay in later entries like they’re copying call of duty.
The first time i had an enemy offscreen one shot one of my party members with a Gauss rifle was a shock. An epic shock.
Sheesh. I wasn’t expecting to hear ‘unhinged’, but if you’re saying it’s like the “wild wasteland” modifier in New Vegas that makes sense. Would you say the fights are more difficult than the fps ones?
I maintain that FF8 is mostly only loved when people have nostalgia for it, or they love the card game, or they love breaking the battle system (generally by using the card game).
I was playing through the series, and 8 was my biggest disappointment.
Originally for my wife, but she got annoyed by the movement too fast. My favourite review of the game so far:
“In this game you will play as the world famous criminal and ecoterrorist Snufkin.
Snufkin is unemployed but charismatic traveller-musician helping various interesting creatures of Moominvalley, all while sabotaging typical autocratic right-winger Hemulen’s plans on making up mundane rules and destroying everything good and beautiful.
Cops in the game are represented evil and stupid, as they are in real life, so I would recommend the game for the whole family as educational game.
On the serious note: Gameplay is fine for this type of game. The core is in the atmosphere, dialogue and sound design which all are great. So far the experience has been smooth, fun and relaxing. Would recommend, but adults should not expect much challenge here.”
