God I fucking love reach. 4 person LASO in reach was one of my favorite gaming experiences ever

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m looking forward to doing LASO with my friends, i’ve already got two of them recruited to help. The customization of your character sticking to your Noble Six definitely makes it more fun too. So instead of 4 master chiefs or Master Chief, Arbiter, and two Elites, it feels more like it’s actually you and your friends.

camr_on,
@camr_on@lemmy.world avatar

Make sure they know what they’re in for lol. We were stuck at the spire at the end of Tip Of The Spear for at least 2 hours lmao. Nobody can quit

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

For sure lol. I’m definitely the calmest out of my friend group and I think even I would get a little ticked off at the game if we had to restart a whole level. So definitely making sure the friends I recruit to help know what they’re getting into

I love that this is possible. I wonder if something is possible for Project 06. I’ve heard it fixes a lot of the game and makes it playable. Dunno if they can help with the story though.

Now this has been done, the team have made the tools available to learn from. I’ve seen a lot of users in forums talking about how they’re planning to tackle other games from the same gen of gaming, so…I’d say given some time we’ll have a good chance of a lot of games getting the same treatment!!!

thats cool, really bring nostalgia, the ‘ps1’ font tho is hilarious

SolidShake, do games w A funny thing in Iran is how they repackage old PlayStation consoles

For older consoles I usually stick to RPGs. Resident evil is okay once you get used to the shit controls. But final fantasys, xenogears, metal gear is good, jet moto, Gran Turismo 2…

Great now I want a PS2

lemmyseikai,

You said Xenogears. Take an internet.

ookiiBoy,

Such a dope game.

Frostbeard,

I have an attention span of a 2 year old, so I never really finish games. But that one of the few to hold my attention all the way through. Even if I initially hates the movement and controls at first since I had expected a FFVII style game

TheKingBee,

Xenogears man, I hate that game. It put a deep hatred for random battles into my heart which killed most JRPGs for me.

You could literally hear the CD stop and the random battles load.

PanArab,
@PanArab@lemm.ee avatar

Xenogears is the best game, or at least JRPG, I ever played and I played over 40 JRPGs from the 8bit era to the modern era. There might be a better JRPG out there but I haven’t played it yet.

TheKingBee,
@TheKingBee@lemmy.world avatar

Story yes, game no.

The only reason I completed it was because I wanted to see the end, but by the end I hated the game so much I can’t play the entire genre anymore without almost physical pain… The mechanics of random battle and grind cause my spirit to flag and my will to drain, now no matter how good the story of the game is I just can’t.

SplashJackson,

Xenogears was tight, but I never played the sequels

SolidShake,

prettybunnys,

Xenogears was fun but I preferred the non-mech side of the game much more than the mechs, tbh.

Don’t get me started on Horizon: Forbidden West. It was a beautiful game. It also had every gameplay problem the first one did, and added several more to boot. The last half of the game was fucking tedious, and I basically finished it out of spite.

inb4_FoundTheVegan,
@inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world avatar

Awww.

I enjoyed the heck out of the first one, especially the story. Haven’t gotten around to picking up the 2nd so that’s a bummer to read.

moody,

I’d say it’s still worth playing, but the story is way more predictable, and they made some things more grindy to upgrade than they were in the first one. Also they added robots that are even more of a slog to fight through.

Those giant turtles are bullshit and just not fun.

metaldream, (edited )

If you’re actually struggling with the turtle guys that is 100% a skill issue. Literally just break the shell off and they die very quickly, there’s nothing to “slog” through with them. Out of all the big enemies they are by far the easiest.

So sick of reading nothing but shitty hot takes when it comes to this game. It’s such a good game but gets unfairly nitpicked by reddit/lemmy and review bombed by fascists.

moody,

Lol git gut, my opinion is the only one that matters

marble,

If it helps, I loved both.

scops,

Very much same. I wish the Burning Shores expansion was a bit longer. It’s kinda hard to call it a must-play DLC, but it’s got some big stuff in terms of Aloy’s character development.

ShinkanTrain,

I enjoyed learning the backstory of the first one, but I was very disinterested in the story, as in, what is currently happening.

hOrni,

If You liked the stealth aspects of the first game then there is no point in starting the second. The stealth is gone. It’s also more difficult. The equipment is much more complicated.

metaldream,

Stealth is gone from HFW, since when? I stealth just about every encounter in HFW with no issues at all.

hOrni,

I agree. I loved the first game, considered it one of my favourites. Couldn’t wait for the sequel. I was so disappointed, I abandoned it after a couple of hours.

red_bull_of_juarez,

I loved both. Different strokes…

metaldream,

It’s so weird how reddit and Lemmy constantly shit on these games yet they always score well with players elsewhere.

I never get sick of the combat in these games, the world is absolutely gorgeous, and the story is a lot of fun.

PS1 was my first console, I wish I still had it. Spent my days with Crash Bandicoot and Hogs of War

AlpacaChariot,

I’ve been playing Crash Bandicoot on an R36s recently, it’ such a nostalgic game. Amazing that you can play it on a ~£35 handheld! You can’t beat the gameplay in some of the old classics.

bizzle,
@bizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Hell yeah you have, nice. I looked up that thing, do you like yours? One of my kids really likes the retro games and that price is right

AlligatorBlizzard,

I got one around Christmas on sale and I’m a big fan of mine, I’m replaying Crash Team Racing and Final Fantasy Tactics at the moment. They’ve got some quirks, there’s a lower powered variant floating around, definitely read through the subreddit and do a bit of research on the device. I will say that it’s awesome for what it is, but there’s places where it feels like a ~$30 gadget.

AlpacaChariot,

Yeah it’s great, my daughter has been enjoying all the old games as well so i bought her one too for her birthday. It’s much easier as a parent to give her the R36s and the retro games because they are all self contained offline things unlike a lot of modern games.

Some things I’d say to consider before buying:

  • Factor in the cost of a good quality SD card (or two, one for the system and one for ROMs) to replace the one that comes with it. There are loads of warnings in forums etc about the cards that are supplied, but even so I was shocked when the card that came with mine broke after 2 days. Get a decent card like Samsung Evo Plus 128GB.
  • It’s easier to start fresh when you get a new card than it would be to clone the one that comes with the device. Get the OS from here: github.com/AeolusUX/ArkOS-R3XS/releases
  • For ROMs, search archive.org for “tiny best set go”
AlligatorBlizzard,

Not everything being sold as the R36s is able to use ArkOS (although I think there’s been progress on getting the other ones to use that OS), more deets here. Also, not every micro SD card works in that second slot, but yeah, just get a Samsung Evo Plus (I’m running dual Microcenter cards, don’t do this lol). There is a huge enthusiast community doing cool things with these devices, there’s a bit of tinkering to get them set up but it’s easy enough.

Alpaca, got anything set up through PortMaster yet? I’ve been meaning to get Stardew Valley and Half-Life on there.

AlpacaChariot,

I’ve never heard of PortMaster, I still haven’t got bored of all the tiny best set games yet!

I think I played half life (maybe 2?) when I was a kid and it scared the crap out of me!

ShepherdPie,

Where are you finding it for so cheap? It’s $60 in American dollarydoos.

AlpacaChariot,

Aliexpress. I bought from a UK website first time and it was double the price but still shipped from China, making it a bit pointless. This is the aliexpress link I used, I have no connection to the seller and only bought from them once, but it arrived in good condition and I’ve tested it works as expected. The unit I received was a “v5”, or “screen panel v4”, I paid £25:

Let’s compare two completely separate games to a game and a remaster.

Generational leaps then:

Good. Lord.

HEXN3T,
@HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It is baffling to me that people hate cross gen games so much. Like, how awful for PS4 owners that don’t have to buy a new console to enjoy the game, and how awful for PS5 owners that the game runs at the same fidelity at over 60FPS, or significantly higher fidelity at the same frame rate.

They should have made the PS4 version the only one. Better yet, we should never make consoles again because they can’t make you comprehend four dimensions to be new enough.

Maggoty,

The point isn’t about cross generation games. It’s about graphics not actually getting better anymore unless you turn your computer into a space heater rated for Antarctica.

HEXN3T,
@HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It’s a pointless point. Complain about power draw. Push ARM.

Maggoty,

ARM isn’t going to magically make GPUs need less brute force energy in badly optimized games.

HEXN3T, (edited )
@HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

…So push ARM. By optimising games.

EDIT: This statement is like saying “Focusing on ARM won’t fix efficiency because we aren’t focusing on ARM”.

Maggoty,

Yeah no. You went from console to portable.

We’ve had absolutely huge leaps in graphical ability. Denying that we’re getting diminishing returns now is just ridiculous.

HEXN3T,
@HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

We’re still getting huge leaps. It simply doesn’t translate into massively improved graphics. What those leaps do result in, however, is major performance gains.

I have played Horizon Zero Dawn, its remaster, and Forbidden West. I am reminded how much better Forbidden West looks and runs on PS5 compared to either version of Zero Dawn. The differences are absolutely there, it’s just not as spectacular as the jump from 2D to 3D.

The post comes off like a criticism of hardware not getting better enough faster enough. Wait until we can create dirt, sand, water or snow simulations in real time, instead of having to fake the look of physics. Imagine real simulations of wind and heat.

And then there’s gaussian splatting, which absolutely is a huge leap. Forget trees practically being arrangements of PNGs–what if each and every leaf and branch had volume? What if leaves actually fell off?

Then there’s efficiency. What if you could run Monster Hunter Wilds at max graphics, on battery, for hours? The first gen M1 Max MacBook Pro can comfortably run Baldur’s Gate III. Reducing power draw would have immense benefits on top of graphical improvements.

Combined with better and better storage and VR/AR, there is still plenty of room for tech to grow. Saying “diminishing returns” is like saying that fire burns you when you touch it.

Maggoty,

I am reminded how much better Forbidden West looks and runs on PS5 compared to either version of Zero Dawn.

Really? I’ve played both on PS5 and didn’t notice any real difference in performance or graphics. I did notice that the PC Version of Forbidden West has vastly higher minimum requirements though. Which is the opposite of performance gains.

Who the fuck cares if leaves are actually falling off or spawning in above your screen to fall?

And BG3 has notoriously low minimums, it is the exception, not the standard.

If you want to see every dimple on the ass of a horse then that’s fine, build your expensive computer and leave the rest of us alone. Modern Next Gen Graphics aren’t adding anything to a game.

HEXN3T,
@HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’m assuming you’re playing on a bad TV. I have a 4k120 HDR OLED panel, and the difference is night and day.

I also prefer to enjoy new things, instead of not enjoying new things. It gives me a positive energy that disgruntled gamers seem to be missing.

Maggoty,

I’m playing on a normal TV because I’m not made of money.

HEXN3T,
@HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

So you’re claiming new hardware isn’t perceivably better, despite not using a display which is actually capable of displaying said improvements. I use such a display. I have good vision. The quality improvement is extremely obvious. Just because not everyone has a high end display doesn’t mean that new hardware is pointless, and that everyone else has to settle for the same quality as the lowest common denominator.

My best hardware used to be Intel on-board graphics. I still enjoyed games, instead of incessantly complaining how stagnant the gaming industry is because my hardware isn’t magically able to put out more pixels.

The PS5 is a good console. Modern GPUs are better than older ones. Games look better than they did five or ten years ago. Those are cold, hard, unobjectionable facts. Don’t like it? Don’t buy it.

I do like it.

metaldream,

HFW runs like butter on PC, and personally I noticed a big difference between HZD and HFW on PS5.

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

What those leaps do result in, however, is major performance gains.

Which many devs will make sure you never feel them by “optimizing” the game for only the most bleeding edge hardware

Then there’s efficiency. What if you could run Monster Hunter Wilds at max graphics, on battery, for hours? The first gen M1 Max MacBook Pro can comfortably run Baldur’s Gate III. Reducing power draw would have immense benefits on top of graphical improvements.

See, if the games were made with a performance first mindset, that’d be possible already. Not to dunk on performance gains, but there’s a saying that every time hardware gets faster, programmers make their code slower. I mean, you can totally play emulated SNES games with minimal impact compared to leaving the computer idling.

Saying “diminishing returns” is like saying that fire burns you when you touch it.

Unless chip fabrication can figure a way to make transistors “stack” on top of one another, effectively making 3D chips, they’ll continue to be “flat” sheets that can only increase core count horizontally. Single core frequency peaked in early 2000s, from then on it’s been about adding more cores. Even the gains from a RTX 5090 vs a RTX 4090 aren’t that big. Now compare with the gains from a GTX 980 vs a GTX 1080

What I don’t understand is why games look prettier but things like NPC AI (which is really path-finding and decision trees, not actual AI), interactivity of the game world, destructability of game objects - all those things are objectively worse than they have been in a game of 10-15 years ago (with some exceptions like RDR2).

How can a game like Starfield still have all the Bethesda jank but now the NPCs lack any kind of daily routine?

Most enemies in modern shooters barely know how to flank, compare that to something like F.E.A.R. which came out in 2006!

Good luck finishing it up and redoing that level on CE! Note that the pelican (pictured in this post) is the vehicle that is typically used to transport marines. You were driving a falcon.

There is an easter egg on that level that lets you drive a pelican, though!

MyNameIsAtticus,

Somehow i managed to cheese the Halo CE one. What i think happened was that the conditions to check are just checking if the level is beat with Anti-Cheat on, and then just checking what the highest difficulty done is (with anti-cheat not included in the equation). I recently have been playing with one of my younger siblings through the entire Master Chief Saga and we’ve made it through CE and half of 2, so i’m assuming that ticked the boxes for Condition 1. So as of today my Halo MCC service record says i have played through the entirety of it on legendary!

Damn on the Falcon though. I have have just recently started being able to tell ghosts and banshees apart. Me and my friend had to come with a whole ass mnemonic device for it (“ghost goes on ground”). I’ll definitely have to go back and look at the Pelican Easter egg though. Halo has had some of my favorite Easter Eggs to date.
