Zoidsberg, do games w Starbreeze admits Payday 3 is massively underperforming
@Zoidsberg@lemmy.ca avatar
9715698,

Damn it’s weird seeing that meme in such high resolution.

Rentlar, do games w Starbreeze admits Payday 3 is massively underperforming
  1. Make your game require always online connectivity
  2. Rush your development, causing network issues, bugs, missing QoL features
  3. Push ahead with monetization schemes despite problems
  4. Players vanish
  5. Surprised Pikachu face

Congratulations Starbreeze, you made a game so shitty that it’s not even worth pirating. They will practically have to relaunch the game to reclaim the playerbase at this point.

tux,

Don’t forget taking forever for an initial patch release, despite there being multiple game breaking bugs.

The state the game was at release was absolutely awful.

The only folks who kept playing that I know were folks grinding for the final levels/achievements/weapons. Which consisted of playing in unenjoyable ways like using bad load outs, doing stupid crap like tagging a billion guards, etc. Who wants to pay money for an unenjoyable grind?

They released a decent patch, some new content and DLC but everyone has already moved on. They totally screwed themselves, sucks it’s an IP that I like, but more games need to fail like this so publishers stop doing the same bullshit

Rentlar,

Yeah, I’ve played Payday 2 but I wasn’t going to pick this up for any more than $10US.

This review from a Japanese player with 426hours playtime was really telling…, to summarize:

  • Way too late to form a strike team, are they even working to fix it?
  • Years ago the CEO put comments to the media about wanting to make a game to run over the long term. If you want that then don’t put out a game that flops at the start.
  • The developers have full on ignored player feedback, and just putting in what they feel like and maybe a handful of Payday 2 brought in as a bonus. Infrequent updates on the Steam Community, never responding to users, releasing a DLC people couldn’t play and saying “have a nice weekend” on X.
  • A patch finally comes but it introduces new bugs, many big issues still unaddressed, game still dropping frames and unoptimized.
  • Are the devs shitfaced drunk while making this game? If they can get money while hardly doing work I’d want to work there.
  • I uninstalled the game, and even if the game were to massively improve, I wouldn’t return as the studio treats players like nothing but money generators.
NOSin,

Stop blaming Devs and blame corpo above them. Can’t guarantee that’s the case here but it’s almost always their fault rather than the Devs when things go wrong on a launch like this.

yamanii,
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe they should unionize or walkout or something, costumers can’t fight their fight.

As proven with Volition, if we don’t buy their game in protest they are closed down anyway instead of getting another shot at something we actually want, nothing can change from this side.

Glamborghini,

Man, was this game a disappointment. So many privacy agreements just to install the bloody thing. The entire experience was a letdown. PD2 was so so so much fun and this game arrived just wobbly and with pre-shat pants. What a damn dud.

Rentlar,

50 hours of gameplay! If you include the amount of time it takes to read the Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and End User License Agreement.

Hubi, do games w Starbreeze admits Payday 3 is massively underperforming

Damn. I knew it was bad but seeing this it’s more like “catastrophic”:

Holy shit, it’s actually impressive to tank that hard - not cresting more than 1000 concurrent players in over a month, and hasn’t been able to beat 5000 since November… I know people love throwing the ‘dead game’ meme around prematurely, but if this isn’t dead yet, it’s definitely got one foot in the grave.

Carighan, do games w Embracer says it's looking out for shareholders after cutting almost 1,400 jobs
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, it’s good someone is looking out for the poor poor shareholders. Just earlier I saw a long line of them at the unemployment office, begging for food from passerbyes, destitute in their poverty. /s

Potatos_are_not_friends,

The shareholders at the local yacht club were really bummed out because many of them were saving really hard to add another ship to their collection, and some might even have to cancel a 2 week international vacation. Ive started a GoFundMe because no shareholder should feel so deprived of those basic needs.

partial_accumen,

It really is sad these days. You can see them holding signs written on the back of Form 10-K documents at road intersections say things like:

“Need dividends. Any amount helps. God Bless.”

But really, you have to just ignore them. You know anything you give them they’re just going to blow on equities in unproven klepto-corporate business models with over aggressive spending attempting to capture market share in industries paying abusively small wages to their destitute workers. You can try to help them like I did one time:

  • Me: "Hey, here’s a couple of shares in a company that hires those recently released from prison for light industrial assembly work giving them a good reference for future employment. Its not worth much, but they do some good for the community."
  • Them: "Can I as a shareholder petition the board to fire the ex-cons, ship the assembly work offshore, and perform a stock buyback increasing the value of the shares?"
  • Me: "I don’t think the board is interested in that as it violates the company mission"
  • Them: “Then I don’t want those shares”

It’s refreshing to see evil motherfuckers being evil openly instead of trying to hide it with doublespeak or outright denying it. I love Coffee Stain Studio’s games and how they handle monetization, and this announcement makes me worried for both the studio and their projects.

Gork,

Damn I didn’t know that Coffee Stain was owned by Embracer.

If Embracer forces them to stop working on Valheim or Satisfactory imma shit some bricks.

cows_are_underrated,

Then let’s hope this doesn’t happen

-Your Intestines

SkyezOpen,

If they somehow shove mtx into valheim I’m gonna riot.

dumpsterlid, (edited )

Don’t worry, the business model of companies like Embracer is literally to strip mine “inefficient” businesses run by artists through short circuiting the positive feedback loop between game developers passionate about what they do and loyal fans, trashing the work environment for the employees by cutting everything, and ripping off fans until they realize the place that made the art they love is alive only in name.

Valheim will be fine! https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/16b6a6f1-21fe-41e6-9f9d-b0f7e979c432.jpeg

ech,

Ah damn, really? CS publishes/develops some great games.

Breaks my heart. One of the best franchises/IPs

marlowe221, do games w Report: Embracer cancels Eidos' unannounced Deus Ex project, lays off staff

I love Deus Ex. This is extremely disappointing news.

quams69, do games w Report: Embracer cancels Eidos' unannounced Deus Ex project, lays off staff

We always hear about shit companies like embracer, but who are the actual people in charge? Who are the people who are very bad at their jobs and should be publically ostracized for damaging not only their ips but the lives of hundreds to thousands of working developers? Like what are their names? Who are these faceless scumbags?

Embracer is just a name to hide behind, the people involved in the decisionmaking here should be known by name, like Bobby “incredible piece of human filth” Kotick

MeekerThanBeaker,

You can tell from the pictures that they all play video games. /s

I really hate how people in charge of companies usually don’t give a crap about the product, just how to exploit it.

CaptDust,

I honestly do believe Lars Wingefors is passionate about games and the industry, he’s been trying to find a place in it his whole career, but I do not think he’s a good business man nor worthy of stewardship for these IPs.

MeekerThanBeaker,

Very well could be. I didn’t research their backgrounds. I just know from first hand experience of people who get jobs who graduated with business degrees who don’t care about the stuff they sell.

We never asked for this

garretble, do games w Report: Embracer cancels Eidos' unannounced Deus Ex project, lays off staff
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

It seems like the only time you hear about Embracer is when they are cancelling games or closing studios.

What even is their purpose?

edgemaster72,
@edgemaster72@lemmy.world avatar

Step 1. Amalgamate as many smaller studios as possible

Step 2. Probably some BS about tax writeoffs or packaging debt for sale

Step 3. Profit? (but not enough to pay anyone outside the C suite and maybe investors)

Xanvial,

They supposedly should have an investment deal with a Saudi backed company. But failed last year theverge.com/…/embracer-group-saudi-government-lo…

So they need a lot of cash now

altima_neo,
@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

They’re the holding company that used to be “thq”

Kind of like how Alphabet is to Google, or Meta is to Facebook and Instagram.

cultsuperstar,

Canceling games and closing studios.

magic_lobster_party,

Not so fast! Sometimes they also announce the return of old franchises, just to be shut down shortly after.

Like Timesplitters 4.

dumpsterlid,

There is a precise technical answer to your question a finance person can probably give you but it doesn’t really answer the question no matter how many acronyms they throw at you.

The actual answer is that there is no reason any of this has to be rational. Business people believe so strongly that companies like embracer are valuable and have a function in society that they detect zero cognitive dissonance when said companies don’t actually do anything but buy smaller companies, dissect them and destroy value.

You can’t understand business and finance people like they are scientists, they are closer to priests of a religious sect that believe in things because of their belief system not because of some rational framework that actually supports their ideas.

I think for the rich, it is just “good practice” to commit economic violence against smaller companies, it is good hygiene for keeping the power in the hands of the rich like mowing a field once a year or something. This doesn’t fully explain how poorly some of these companies function like embracer however.

You’ve heard of them before. They used to be called THQ Nordic.

Skelectus,
@Skelectus@suppo.fi avatar

Well, they’ve been doing this a lot. They have bought a massive amount of game studios over the years just to run out of money and close them.

dinckelman, do games w Report: Embracer cancels Eidos' unannounced Deus Ex project, lays off staff

Companies like Embracer are a disease. Their leadership are taking any passion out of the art, and continue running the money printing machine with no oil between the gears

SharkAttak,
@SharkAttak@kbin.social avatar

Would be a real shame if someone boycotted every game they put their greedy claws on..

MelastSB,

Well if they just close studios and cancel games, there’s not much to boycott lol

altima_neo,
@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

At the rate they’re closing their studios and cancelling games, I don’t think there’s gonna be much left.

I don’t know what other games they had planned. So far they still have the studios that make tomb raider and borderlands.

newthrowaway20, do games w Report: Embracer cancels Eidos' unannounced Deus Ex project, lays off staff

Oh that’s a real shame, the Deus Ex games were a lot of fun.
