jlsalvador, do gaming w Feel like a weak year for games?

The last year 2023 was incredible (providing a lot of good games).

I’ve fallen back into playing Celeste. I’ll never be great at this game, but when it’s going well it’s so freaking satisfying to play. Aiming to collect all the strawberries and have a crack at the B-side levels I didn’t complete the last go-around.

Finished The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles last week.

This may be heresy, but I think I enjoyed these two more than both of the other trilogies.

Maybe it’s the setting or characters or unique mechanics, I don’t know, but I fucking loved every minute of it.

The old Might & Magic games are very nice. Especially 4 and 5 that you can combine into an even bigger game with additional quests and an ultimate ending are awesome. And it should even run on your phone through ScummVM.

Valmond,

You mean Heroes of Might & Magic? I remember there were several closely named ones. Played the 3 so much :-)

No, just Might and Magic. Same universe but different genre. They were RPGs while the Heroes series was strategy.

Valmond,

Thanks, will check out the 4 :-) !

Baldurs gate is just so good. Constantly impressed and on my way to act 3!

wccrawford, do pcgaming w Has anyone tried the stadia controller via Bluetooth on PC?

I tried it, found it had horrible latency, and threw it in a box.

I’ve been using the (wired) Gamesir T4 Kaleid on my desktop and loving it.

I’ve been using an XBox Elite (the one that worked, not the one I sent back because the trigger was broken) and it’s been okay, but the dead zones are much, much larger than the Kaleid. I looked at Gamesir’s wireless options, but wasn’t impressed with the reviews, so I haven’t tried any yet.

It‘s also on Steam in case others are wondering like me. Wishlisted there. Really cool theme, hope the gameplay can deliver too.

only ones I can think of are some pretty simple Lovecraft-themed games with XCOM-style turn-based tactical gameplay

A little late to the party, but Helldivers II has been my go to. So much silly fun.

Just finished Rain World.

What a brave game to make. It is not afraid to scare players away. I admit, I ended up having to look up a map in order to find the ending before I threw my PC out the window entirely, but I acknowledge I was not in the right mindset to be playing. You cannot play the game to finish it, you must enjoy the gameplay for what it is, because it is not going to funnel you through the story at all, and you’re going to have a LOT of deaths that feel like total bullshit.

But the atmosphere, and the sound design, and the art, and the creatures, and their AI, and the world building are all top tier. I don’t know if I can recommend anyone play it, but it is a very well made game.

It’s less that they’re easy to get without buying them with real money and more that they’re supposed to be acquired slowly and, when relevant, used sparingly.

My frustration with the discourse is that so many who see the game’s general lack of convenience see that through the filter of these microtransactions and assume ill intent on part of the actual game design when really it’s just genuinely idiosyncratic like the original was.

The truth is, if you’re the sort to be tempted by these purchases in the first place then you’re not the sort of person who would enjoy the game even if you do buy them. I don’t know whether that makes them better or worse, honestly, but if you buy the game it at least doesn’t rub your nose in them like Assassin’s Creed.

I’ve been playing cyberpunk2077 for the past month and a half straight. I was worried going into it because I thought it was going to still be bad. There’s still some minor bugs, but overall I’ve had an enjoyable experience. The only downside is that it’s eaten up so much of my time lol
