Does Cogmind count? Because even when I see people discussing games like it, which are already pretty niche, it never comes up. That’s tragic, because oh my god, just read some of these articles. This developer is obsessive and even if you don’t get too deep into Cogmind it’s an incredible toy to just screw around with and just see what happens.

liminis,

The visuals with that game are so impressive for what it is. It’s like they captured particle effects in 2D.

Second this, great game! One of the best modern traditional roguelike games right now.

ΔV: Rings of Saturn
store.steampowered.com/app/…/V_Rings_of_Saturn

A hard sci-fi 2D space mining sim.
“A physics-based mining sim, set in the thickest debris field in Sol. Every action has a reaction, lasers are invisible without a medium, and your thrust is a potent weapon. Find trade, adapt your equipment to your playstyle, hire a crew to help. Unravel the mysteries of the rings, or just get rich.”

Swervish,

∆V is absolutely fantastic! It just got 1.0 a couple weeks back and the dev is super down to earth, hope people check this out and it becomes a bigger hit.

EarthBound for the SNES is one of my favorite RPGs. Very original for its time in terms of setting and battle mechanics. Also, Ness from Smash Bros. is in it!

winterstillness,

Such a weird game! The artstyle and just the “weirdness” of it is out of this world.

I’m not a fan of turn-based battles, but this is one of the few games (including Chrono Trigger) where it’s legitimately fun. To this day I still think about it.

Jdreben,

Have you played Eastward? Unless I’m mistaken Earthbound is part of the game and plot. If you like Earthbound you might like Eastward. I enjoyed it even having never played Earthbound but I’m sure I missed a lot of references / analogies.

moral_imperative,

I played Eastward and really enjoyed it, even though I thought the ending was bittersweet.

I’ve heard reviews compare it to EarthBound and I guess it reminds me of EarthBound stylistically, but plays more like Zelda or something.

There’s a game within the game called Earth Born that plays like a fast-paced Dragon Quest. It’s an interesting game. :D

Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines. Dated, needs mods to run, but the fact that there’s still a community patch being made for it after all this time says a lot. Haven’t really heard much about it since the sequel crashed and burned, which is sad because no game has really given me the same atmospheric vibes. It was (is?) really special

ArtVandelay,
@ArtVandelay@beehaw.org avatar

I think Beehaw ate my message. Apologies if it’s repeated, but I always felt sad that Redemption doesn’t get the same treatment by the community.

LoamImprovement,

Nothing really captures the atmosphere of a good WoD game quite like bloodlines. The combat is, let’s face it, pretty dogshit, but the writing, worldbuilding, and especially the voice talent and direction are some of the best out there to this day. The game just oozes charisma and flavor, and the pacing of the main quest juxtaposed with the black comedy of so many of the side characters’ goings-on makes it the kind of experience that just pulls you in.

I know Bloodlines 2 will eventually release, likely sometime in the next 2-3 years because paradox just began to spin up their socials again, but even if it weren’t stuck deep in Devhell I get the feeling it just won’t have the same punch B1 did. Granted, B1 was just as rocky on its own day 1 and it didn’t pick up the cult following until well after release, and with the help of a dedicated, loving community that tore it down and rebuilt it from the ground up. We can only hope that community love is still here and willing to make B2 the best game it can be. Time will tell.

Gravelsack, do gaming w Why I Probably Hate your Favorite Video Game's "Awesome Story" (an incomplete list)

People who don’t like anything are incredibly boring, in my humble opinion. Imagine putting all of this effort into an essay about why other people shouldn’t like the things that they like. I think a lot of people mistake being a contrarion for being an intellectual.

zabby, do games w The Outer Worlds 2 | Review Thread

I’m SO relieved!!! I enjoyed the first one more than most people. At the time I was in a rut where most video games were not enjoyable or fun. Then the first game came out and I felt alive again from the SECOND the music started on the title screen!

I’ve been looking forward to the second one for years and I’m so relieved that Microsoft didn’t fuck it up.

scrubbles,
!deleted6348 avatar

I’m taking it as it was mostly completed by the time Microsoft bought them, the story and everything had already been decided, so hopefully an easy win for Obsidian. Future titles started under Microsoft though… idk

RabbitMix, do games w Why would I buy this?

I’m all for hating on CoD, but the DLC “content” is skins and minor cosmetics, it really doesn’t add anything to the game and isn’t necessary at all. Also the CoD Points are for cosmetics as well. There’s a lot of shitty things you can and should say about Vanguard, but it is not pay to win.

TigerAce,

Fair enough, at least we have to give them that. But that means it’s a platform for people to show off they have more money than others and gladly show they wasted it on useless digital nonsense. Not the audience I’d like to play games with.

BootLoop, do games w Preserving Play: How Eden Grew Into the Switch Emulator Everyone’s Talking About (my interview with the devs)

I have not heard of Eden. I was a big fan of Yuzu but this was the first I’ve heard of it.

RightHandOfIkaros,

I have been using it since 0.0.2 dropped a while back, but when I first looked into it I thought it was a straight up malware masquerading as a Switch emulator.

carotte,

it’s not helped by the fact that there’s a bajillion websites claiming to be Eden’s website…

I haven’t watched it myself yet but I’ve heard a lot of good things about Mapocolops playthrough of it and I’ve watched plenty enough of his other Let’s Plays to vouch for him in general.

KhanLee,

I second Mapocolops, all of his souls lets plays are great. He’s one of the few lets players that actually reads item descriptions and tries to understand the story and lore.

Mapocolops is one of the best Let’s Players out there. Always engages with the story and tries to pay attention, likes reading everything and getting immersed, very genuine while still managing to be very entertaining in an authentic way instead of contrived and faked. Also regularly plays retro games, which is very refreshing and sets him apart a bit.

WolfLink, do games w My AYN Thor

Does it have a 3D display?

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

No, Nintendo is the only one who managed that! This is just straight AMOLED

Karjalan,

I mean… The 3D idea was pretty cool, and it worked surprisingly well, but I realistically never used it other that for fun occasionally.

I’ve just hacked and started reusing my old 3DS and it’s great fun! Can download most games abs cool hacks/mods to modify them.

Is this able to hook up with the same software as 3DS so I could do the same on it?

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

You don’t need that same software. The principle is still the same though, you’re loading ROMs of games on there. The 3DS console method simplifies it because they created their own freeshop, but with this, you’re going to load the ROMs yourself.

spicehoarder,

That’s not true, there are other companies making glasses free 3D displays. For me, no 3D is a deal breaker for a device like this

This looks really cool. This is what the DS should have been when it came out. Or at the very least the 3DS. I’m about to check this out.

prole,

Not sure the DS could have had a screen like the top one at that time, at least not without making it cost like $1,500. The tech wasn’t there yet.

Rhynoplaz, do games w What’s your favorite mission in Red Dead Redemption—and why does it hit different?

It’s been too long since I played the first game, but in 2, you try to go straight and live the simple farm life and it’s such a boring part of the game. Typically that’s a bad thing, but I loved how it simulated that itch for chaos. As a player, you’re thinking the same thing as the character. “Not long ago, I was riding around shooting people and making tons of money, and now I’m shoveling shit for pennies a day.” When the mission comes to go back to your roots and raise some hell, you know you shouldn’t, but damn does it feel good to get back to doing what you love.

Its a fantastic game! Got really close to beating it but dropped off. Music was good, the actual monsters very fun. Some of the better pixel art and the controls were tight.

Some of the bosses are VERY hard, to the point I had to look up guides. Its worth the $$. Honestly I wish they had an easy mode or something to get us though the hardest parts.

Im glad you are enjoying it!
