ThemboMcBembo, do gaming w What are some games that "spin" failure states?
@ThemboMcBembo@beehaw.org avatar

Rogue Legacy! You are a knight invading an evil wizard’s castle. When you die, your children take up your mantle and try again.

Dying means you get to try again with a descendant that has different quirks, like “being left-handed” or “dwarfism”

MudMan, do gaming w What are some games that "spin" failure states?
@MudMan@kbin.social avatar

Besides all the roguelikes people mentioned, Omikron: The Nomad Soul from Quantic Dream has you possess a different body each time you die, which comes with different conditions. The idea was then reworked much more extensively for Watch Dogs: Legion, where you play as a whole resistance movement you can expand via recruitment and jump to a different member upon death.

That game blew my mind when I played it back in the day. Despite all the clunky mechanics it achieved a sense of place I don’t get from most modern games. I’m surprised they haven’t revisited or revived it in some way.

I mean, Bungie’s remaking Marathon! Anything is possible in this crazed timeline

cdipierr,

Does slapping the Marathon brand on an extraction shooter count as a remake?

itmightbethew,
@itmightbethew@beehaw.org avatar

You’re right, it doesn’t really. But I bet if they revisited omikron it would be the same story, a different genre of game with many familiar trappings.

Kinda like how the newer Doom games purport to be more like the originals while simultaneously getting less like them. Although I absolutely love Doom Eternal, let me be clear.

The space is so saturated it feels like it’s only a matter of time before every game I’ve ever played is remastered, remade, revisited, or given a extremely late sequel

cdipierr,

Absolutely, the Brand Mines are deep, and no IP will be left unexploited.

TheFool, do piracy w Guides / Apps for encoding
@TheFool@infosec.pub avatar

ffmpeg, if you need a gui use handbreak

Sourmilk,

I currently use Handbrake (I’m not much without a GUI aha) but it doesn’t seem to have any options for merging / combining video files. I’m hoping to encode here, but the bluray source splits the movie into a couple of video files, and I’d like to combine them first before encoding

TheFool,
@TheFool@infosec.pub avatar

Are you trying to concat streams or just to remux? For remuxing as roawre said there’s also MkvToolNix, which works great (and it has a gui don’t worry)

Sourmilk,

Mkvtoolnix

I’m sorry, I’ve done a poor job explaining. The source has split the movie, intro, and credits into 3 video files, and i’d like to make them one file, before or during the re-encoding process, so that the final movie includes the intro and credits. I’m currently grabbing MKVtoolnix, to see if it can do it, but I completely missed @roawre comment, so thank you for re-iterating, thanks to roawre for the original comment, and thanks to everyone for their responses, getting into this seems overwhelming and i’m so grateful to have your assistance!

Also, the files I have are “.m2ts”, will mkvtoolnix support this, or will I need to encode first? MKVtoolnixs website seems to imply it only really likes .MKV files

TheFool,
@TheFool@infosec.pub avatar

Okay MkvToolnix isn’t the right tool for that afaik, but ffmpeg is and it sucks there isn’t a GUI for it that’s as powerful as the cli which is what I use, luckily you can find a lot of help online,

Apart from that I’m afraid i can’t help much, but good luck with your search!

Aztechnology, do games w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

FF12 had some bullshit chest near the beginning of the game… If you opened it you lost the ability to 100% the game and get the Zodiac spear ( reportedly some ability to get one in a very tedious grunts fashion but it’s been ages)

Basically the straw that broke the camel’s back for me with ff… The games story and combat was already a let down after they dropped the turn based combat like all of them ff1-ff10

But yeah generally I dislike many soft lock mechanics or illogical things that punish you for just playing the game… Oftentimes these were put in games just to sell strategy guides.

Fuck Sierra games, it's why I gave up on them and played only Lucasarts point-and-click adventure games.

Same although I didnt get into the lucasarts games until the 2000s. I played every Sierra game and love/hated them all not realizing there was a better way to live.

Any of the Sierra "X Quest" games. Space Quest, Police Quest... so many soft locks. I remember Police Quest had a soft lock that would trigger on the first day but wouldn't become apparent until day 3 or 4.

Yes how can we horrify children

Sloner, do gaming w Are there still any solid, updated minecraft modpacks around?

For automation I can recommend the pack “Create: Above and beyond” as it teaches you the best tech mod aviable for modern versions. There is a colony builder mod called MineColonies that you can just add to any recent modpack.

SmoochyPit,

I second Create: Above and Beyond!! I’ve been playing it with a friend, it’s got a fun progression with plenty of processing. Early game is rough— I recommend exploring natural generated structures for iron and stuff before really diving into the automation.

Note that it’s still a fairly “kitchen sink” modpack. The magic mods feel especially slapped on there. It also has computercraft and tinker’s construct, which aren’t really integrated with the main progression. If you’re looking for a consistent style with less complexity to start, it might be worth playing Create 1.20.1 on its own or with a few “vanilla+” mods. Create has a “ponder” feature that can teach you how to use basically every part of the mod.

Mickey, do gaming w Does anyone know of any kid-friendly "horror" games out there for children ~7 years old?

Take a look at Dredge! It’s a creepy horror-ish game where you play as a fishing boat. There are some creepy elements at night but it’s fairly causal overall. I really loved the atmosphere and light story elements as well as the fun fishing games that is the majority of the gameplay.

Lowbird,

If he’s a precocious reader, Sunless Sea is a horror game with a similar sort of theme. The content is much weirder and more horrifying than Dredge, but it’s 99.9% delivered via text, so the impact may feel more tolerable regardless.

But again it’s very text-heavy, possibly too much so depending on the kid. Probably too difficult, too.

Great game though.

BlueAure, do piracy w Is Direct Connect still 'a thing'?

Purdue University still has a campus-only file sharing network called DTella that’s DC++. It been getting smaller, but there were a few members that shared 50+ TB at one point.

Madbrad200, (edited ) do games w What game has a great story and is worth the time investment?

Baldur’s Gate story is great, yes.

Dragon Age (fantasy magick adventure) and Mass Effect (space opera) are also great.

bionicjoey,

Describing Mass Effect as a soap opera makes me irrationally angry. I think you meant “Space Opera”, although even that isn’t accurate. It’s far more like Star Trek than Star Wars.

Madbrad200,

I definitely meant space opera lol oops

NieR Automata for me, even with its 4 required playthroughs, it’s a fantastic story that genuinely made me question a lot of beliefs I had about life

Alternatively, NieR Replicant which is just as good on its 2nd and third playthrough because of knowing everything in the first playthrough

Red dead redemption 2 has a really good story. Gameplay is pretty immersive and lots to explore.

God of war have a really good story and gameplay is overall fun.

Ni no Kuni II I found to be an interesting story. Gameplay was fun overall.

Ori, both games, has a good story to tell. Overall good platformer

Hollow knight is a fun platformer and overall story is good. Similar but not as good, death’s door.

Death stranding has an interesting story but kind of strange. Gameplay is OK but can get a bit repetitive at times.

Spider-Man, overall fun. Story is unique.

Ghost of tsushima, good story and gameplay. Visually lovely.

Cyberpunk 2077 I found immersive, story wasn’t bad but might not be for everyone.

ProffessionalAmateur,

Second the GOW’s, RDT2 and GOT. Fantastic emotional plot driven games. I’d add both HZD’s too.

pricklypearbear,
@pricklypearbear@lemmy.world avatar

Forgot about Horizon. That was a good story as well.

JimmyMcGill,

I’m halfway through RDR2 and the gameplay is boring af. Ok not all gameplay, mostly the quests. The world is amazing, and it’s quite immersive indeed but 90% of the quests are, go here, shoot some guys, come back.

cygnosis,
@cygnosis@lemmy.world avatar

The issue with quests in RDR2 is that they give you no autonomy. Most games set a quest objective and give you a dozen ways to achieve it. RDR2 forces you to follow the exact path through the quest that the game wants you to take. If you deviate it either fails to progress or simply fails the quest. It felt more to me like an interactive movie than a game in that respect, though you get full freedom outside of quests.

potterpockets, do games w What game has a great story and is worth the time investment?

Spec Ops: The Line.

A bit dated, but one of the few shooters that makes you question your actions and view warfare for what it does to civilians and to soldiers. Definitely some memorable story moments.

5ibelius9insterberg,

This game is not fun. Not at all.

But I do not regret playing it.

Fantasic game. Intentionally meh gameplay. One of my faves, highly recommend.

The Outer Wilds, Fallout New Vegas and Just Cause 3

ExtraMedicated, (edited )

I was also gonna say Outer Wilds. My Steam library is almost entirely indie games and not much else stands out to me story-wise except maybe:

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

The Upturned

Song of Horror

Withering Rooms

rustyricotta,

Cannot say Outer Wilds enough. Wonderful experience. Exploration and lore is everything in this game. But it’s not too much. Some games have exploration and lore just for the sake of having it. Whereas everything in Outer Wilds is purposeful and motivating to do.
