Theoretically it’s not a turnoff: for example, I was fine with paying the subscription for World of Warcraft back in 2007. But in practice I know what it means today, and that means being psychologically manipulated and crit in the wallet, so hell freakin no.

I actually am in favour of government legislation against them since they generally appeal to the young, who are essentially psychologically defenceless against most of the trickery. I don’t quite think they’re “spiritual opium” as the PRC would say, but the line was crossed long ago

I don’t have the time to play live service games. The next time I play a game it might be completely different? No appeal to me at all

Zoot_, do games w Do you find the description Live Service Game off-putting?

Live service games/ games a service are an automatic no from me. Too many have little to no content, constant delays on content, a dying community, or ridden with predatory monetization. Not to mention I dont like to pay for games that i cant play when the servers go down.

Live Service Game, the idea…I find unappealing and just plain skippable. Live Service Game, the phrase…is so much better than “Game as a Service.”

But hey, not every game/genre/delivery method is going to appeal to everybody. The industry is big enough to cater to multiple niches, even if some are much (much, much) bigger than others. I’m happy that people can find whatever game they like, and I can find my favorites as well. That doesn’t make anybody more correct than the other.

I simply don’t buy live service games. I hate them

@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Agree with other commenters: this is healthy.

For me, I bought Elden Ring day one because the hype was real. It’s a good game – but not really my jam.

I explored the Yakuza series for a similar reason, and I’ve absolutely loved that. I really want to try Ishin.

I bought a PS4 Pro for RDR2. I stand by that decision, but I probably wouldn’t go that far again.

At this point I’ve got the Steam Controller and 2 backups that I bought when Valve was offloading them for $5 each. It’s still one of my favorite controllers, and it’s the only way to comfortably play strategy titles from the couch without KBM on a tray table or something.

I really hope they bring out a new one, in particular if it has quadruple grips on the back like the Deck.

I use it, but due to it being more cumbersome, I go to IRC first. If I can’t find it on IRC, I can usually get it from DC++.

pirate,

Are you using xdcc.eu or sunxdcc.com, or are you searching directly through IRC on each of your preferred servers?

noisypine,

Little bit of both. Usually I start with sunxdcc and xdcc.eu, but if I can’t find it, I search in the chats. Sometimes not all packs are listed and the search engines.

highduc,

Not sure if joking or…? If you’re joking it went over my head :)

noisypine,

Not joking. This all works, probably a lot better than you may think.

lauha,

How do you search files on IRC? You’re joking, right?

jayandp,

There are IRC/XDCC search engines. I don’t know their exact method of scraping IRC servers, but they kinda work.

Also, if you know the right servers and channels, most have some kind of search index or bot.

noisypine,

Not joking. There are sites like sunxdcc for searching from the web, and otherwise, !s in chats to search. Works great, honestly.

XEAL,

TIL!

SweetMylk,

Yeah, I went through them, but seems this type of games are kind a niche. Found only IGG & steamunlocked (most likely those are the same) sources, which are untrustworthy.

Became a thing again for me after the death of 32p without a replacement.

bblfrnz,

Exactly, unfortunately dc is the only place where you can find 32p content.

pascal,

What’s 32p?

bblfrnz,

A private tracker that doesn’t exist anymore

frishi,

Aaaaand here’s my mandatory plug for ThreeTwo, a comic book curation app (like Mylar) but with integration with DC++ by the way of AirDC++

Check it out if that’s your thing: github.com/rishighan/threetwo

Apologies if my plug is in bad taste, but I’m trying to reach as many interested users as possible to get them to test and give me feedback.

bblfrnz, do piracy w Is Direct Connect still 'a thing'?

It is still used. There are lots of various hubs, a bunch of niche hubs with content that is almost impossible to find anywhere else, especially if it’s something really old and obscure, not all of them are public. Speaking of clients, try AirDC++ for instance, thats what I use right now
