I got kinda caught up in Dig Dig Dino but to be honest, I‘m lagging behind in giving the newer games a fair shot since the release of the Switch 2 has distracted me slightly

Enjoying KOTOR2 at the moment. A More Civilized Age (AKA my favorite podcast ever) is doing a playalong of the game right now, so that has been motivating me through all the clunky combat scenarios. I’m really loving the juicy dialogue and top-tier voice acting. The Exile is so much more interesting than any other protagonist i’ve ever seen in a BioWare game - I feel like I really have a lot of room to interpret what kind of grey Jedi i want to be. I am shocked that Obsidian (and notorious POS Chris Avellone) pumped out this much amazing writing in 10 months.

I never finished all the time trials in Mario Kart 8, and I don’t have the budget to grab a Switch 2, so i’ve been plugging away at those trials to satiate my hunger for MKWorld.

@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

So it’s this versus Expedition 33 for GOTY then? I feel for Sandfall, that’s some unfortunate timing if they end up upstaged by Kojima.

simple,

I'd argue their timing was very fortunate since GTA 6 got pushed to next year. That game would've dominated the popularity votes on all the GOTY shows.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

It’s definitely not decided yet. A breakout hit could still come out of nowhere, which seems to be happening more and more often lately, including Clair Obscur. There’s also still the likes of Donkey Kong Bananza, Mina the Hollower, and Hollow Knight: Silksong coming later this year, and those are just the ones on my radar that seem likely to review that well.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I have a very hard time seeing any of those competing with either Clair Obscur or Death Stranding 2, apart from maybe Silksong (if it actually ever does come out). But even then I’m not sold.

Mina the Hollower will probably duke it out with Blue Prince for the indie game of the year.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

The OpenCritic score is a very reliable predictor for winning the Game Awards, which is itself mostly an aggregate of review outlets. Donkey Kong is the next game from (probably) the Mario Odyssey team, and Odyssey has a 97 on OpenCritic, with Bananza looking to have a lot of the same design ethos. If I were a betting man, I’d be putting my money on Bananza winning GOTY. The previous Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight both hover around 90, so it’s possible but not the most likely thing in the world that Silksong or Mina exceed 90 by a wide margin, but they’ve got a better shot than most.

duchess,

Is being GOTY of any significance? Does it matter?

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

FromSoft reported sales of Elden Ring increased by over 200% following its GOTY win, if I remember right. It definitely has an impact. I can’t imagine it’s irrelevant in terms of attracting or keeping talent either, and it probably would help maintaining creative integrity and sticking to your vision in talks with investors.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

It’s interesting to note that the Game Awards started having a tangible effect on sales in the past handful of years. Games that used to come out in November now come out in October at the latest, because that’s the deadline for Game Awards nominations.

Stellar Blade is a 2024 game, so likely not GotY this year if it wasn’t even close last year.

Looks incredible. I love this game so much.

I have only just started creating individual off-site factories for major production. I have a hefty boy that produces 250 stators per minute, but it’s not nearly as pretty.

Lenny, (edited ) do games w Dune game

I’m about 85 hrs in and will probably stop playing around 100. I’m playing solo btw, and it’s been fun but it feels like there’s no end game for me. Even as a group I would question if the end game is even worth it. All I have left to do is unlock all the skills (but there’s no challenging and engaging PvE content to justify it), and build a big base for funsies, which is what I’m doing now.

They need challenging repeatable PvE content to keep people like me engaged, or rewarding pvp gameplay. I was hoping the Deep Desert would be more akin to something like Rust, but really all they’ve done it taken the last tier of resource materials, spread them out over a very boring and empty map, and force you to be pvp flagged to get it. And you have to fly everywhere there, 1) because it’s fast and avoids worms, and 2) because the only vehicle combat is shooting rockets from the ornithopter so you’re dead to pvp if anyone else comes after you and you’re not in one.

ryven,
@ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

With regard to vehicle combat, I find it very strange that the very first NPC we meet has a man-portable surface-to-air missile launcher, but there don’t seem to be any anti-vehicular weapons that players can use.

Or at least I think there aren’t; I’m not nearly as far as you are, but I looked ahead in the research tab and didn’t see any.

Lenny,

Hah, so true! I haven’t heard or seen anything about a portable rocket so I think you’re correct. The only heavy weapons (which won’t help against vehicles) are essentially the big machine gun and flamethrower, the same ones the heavy NPC’s have.

dev_null,

There are lasguns, and the same missile launcher the NPC has is also craftable.

Lenny,

Oh nice! Do you know the name of the launcher? All my searches just bring up ornithopter rockets.

dev_null,

It’s called “Regis Missile Launcher” and is in the last tier.

dev_null,

You can craft that same missile launcher, it’s not even a unique weapon, but a normal tech tree unlock. You can also use a lasgun against vehicles (which you need to find a schematic for or gain from a mission).

Tetsuo, do games w Dune game

How grindy is the game?

I have multiple friends that told me that Conan exile was quite grindy and that they are not convinced by Dune because of that.

It’s too bad because I think they would appreciate the game but are too concerned by the fact that it would take a lot of time to get good stuff.

ryven,
@ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I am about 4-ish resource tiers in out of 7-ish or so, and I don’t feel like it is especially grindy by the standards of survival crafting games. There is obviously some grinding for resources, but there is also a good amount of exploring and doing quests, during which you can pick up a lot of the things you need. Getting through the iron tier was a little bit long because you don’t have access to a large vehicle inventory yet at that point, but I also took that time to reveal a bunch of the map, clear out bandit camps, etc. so it didn’t become too monotonous. There are a good variety of secondary resources that will keep you visiting different kinds of locations (wrecked ships, old mining operations, etc.) so that even if you just want to farm resources, you won’t just be spending all your time running between ore nodes.

If your friends would be playing together, they could also do things more efficiently by sharing bases so that they don’t each have to build their own infrastructure, and eventually you get access to a mining buggy that is faster to operate with two players (a solo player has to switch between the driver and mining laser seats).

BlameTheAntifa,

The end-game gets extremely grindy very suddenly, like running into a wall. Until you reach that point, it doesn’t feel grindy in the slightest.

Anytime we drive on the 215 to go somewhere I’m almost always looking around at stuff and trying to picture how it’d look in-game but in real life.
