bblfrnz, do piracy w Is Direct Connect still 'a thing'?

It is still used. There are lots of various hubs, a bunch of niche hubs with content that is almost impossible to find anywhere else, especially if it’s something really old and obscure, not all of them are public. Speaking of clients, try AirDC++ for instance, thats what I use right now

Season 29… of a video game?

I’m kind of glad I don’t play in whatever ecosystem that is. It sounds exhausting.

finishsneezing,

Too many people just accept it. Maybe due to an apparent lack of alternatives, fomo and some sort of sunk cost fallacy addiction.

seliaste,
@seliaste@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Sunk cost fallacy is hard to see happening in a game where each season resets your characters

finishsneezing,

Not with money, but time and effort.

seliaste, (edited )
@seliaste@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes that’s also what I’m talking about
Your previous characters aren’t important anymore, it’s a fresh start all the time. On each new season there has been 0 previous time and effort investment

finishsneezing,

You have on the game as a whole, though. Mechanics, strategies, locations, weapons, lore, maybe friendships with other players. Hard to leave all that behind.

seliaste,
@seliaste@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Diablo seasons are just a character reset for those who enjoy them. It’s a huge part of a lot of ARPGs like Path of Exile or Diablo. As you can reach endgame in about 5 hours on diablo and have your complete build in 20, it makes sense.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

What does the season do differently that you can't do by just selecting a new character option from the main menu?

Silverhand,
@Silverhand@beehaw.org avatar

Enforces everyone to reset at the same time and not use gear and stuff from previous characters. Some people care about leaderboards and those usually reset at the same time. For other ARPGs with a trade economy that being reset is often the biggest draw, but that doesn’t apply to D3.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

But if you can complete a character in 20 hours, why not just have daily and weekly leaderboards? Why even have arbitrary seasons?

fffera,

I couldn’t give less of a fuck about leaderboards, but I enjoy seasons in D3, but not D4. In D3 you get to max level and get a set of pretty good gear in a few hours. I’m a casual player, I don’t play the entirety of the season because I kinda hit my limit and stop getting new shiny things and don’t feel like pushing it so I stop playing. Then a new season comes out, I’m like “I haven’t played Diablo in a bit, that sounds fun” and I do the same thing, smash monsters and get shiny things.

In D4 the new season landed and I just couldn’t be bothered to level again and it really killed the game for me, I’m kinda maxed out on non-seasonal, it gets to the point where you’re doing the same thing over and over for hours, or you push harder content where it takes forever to kill something and everything kills you in one hit. I just want to smash shit and get loot, I don’t want to level again if it takes more than a couple hours.

Basically seasons can be fun (also they test new content, that keeps things fresh) as long as you can jump right back into the game. Without it you have a ton of legendary items for every class so you just never really need new gear, you just grind for that single piece you need for a 2% upgrade.

Tldr I don’t want to grind, I just want to smash baddies, and I’m basically a bird collecting shiny shit. D3 enables that, D4 doesn’t. It’s all about implementation.

fucking lemmy man, wrote out awhole ass answer to this and got deleted. god fucking dammit.

welp. here goes again.

headphones is a monthly subscription and not that great, not worth it at all.

lidarr is garbage and the folks around it are assholes. you iether love it and froth at the mouth when someone says they’re having trouble with it, or you hate it. It also is a fucking resource hog like I’ve never seen. MAJOR memory leaks

I use Roon and Qobuz, and Nicotine+ for stuff that isn’t on Qobuz. qobuz-dl is really robust and awesome and can do anything you want lidarr to do: just maintain a list of artists in a document, and qobuz-dl will automatically download anything new as it keeps track of what’s already been downloaded before.

The Roon folks are just as bad as the Lidarr folks. This shit costs $7-800 for a lifetime license and it does’t even include ANY music streaming. It’s just a music server and manager. And they don’t actually have tech support. Literally if you go to their support page, they direct you to a fucking forum full of morons high on the koolaid (bc honestly you have to be if you invested $700 on a shitty music player), tell you to get lost if you don’t like a program with bugs up the ass.

I would love to make an open source offering that does what roon does but also allows you to automatically download stuff using qobuz-dl, tidal-dl, bandcamp-dl, etc.

Supa, do nintendo w What are you playing this weekend? 2023-09-09

Playing Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. It’s sad, though. I’ve noticed my urge to play the game slowly drop more and more once I realized how much of the map, weapons, and music is borrowed from BotW. Sometimes, it feels like I’m just playing BotW 2.0 instead of a proper sequel. Still, I keep making progress.

Replaying Paper Mario TTYD. I really love this RPG and the Paper Mario series as a whole. Really hope we get a proper RPG for the next game in the series, with partners, badges and all that stuff.

I’m also replaying Mirror’s Edge. One of my favorite games, thanks to the setting and soundtrack. It still looks beautiful, despite it coming out in 2008.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Thankfully I have very short memory, and I played BOTW on launch, so didn’t had any issue with that. Maybe you should take a break, and come back to it later?

Well, whatever new Paper Mario we get, it will be on Switch 2. Let’s see what they do that with it.

Mirror’s Edged is that parkour game, right? Where you are running around on rooftops?

Supa,

I only played BotW back in 2021, so that’s why I remember so much haha. I guess a break wouldn’t hurt.

Yeah, Mirror’s Edge is that first person parkour game. If you haven’t played it yet, I definitely recommend giving it a shot. I love how the levels flow, and I find myself getting a lot better every time I run through the game.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

I have always wanted to play Mirror’s Edge, but for some reason never got around to it. Will see if it I can find it somewhere cheap.

turkalino,
@turkalino@lemmy.yachts avatar

it feels like I’m just playing BotW 2.0 instead of a proper sequel

Really? Sure, they carried over some assets and the shape of the overworld map is the same… but most of the stuff ON the map, the chasm map, the sky map, cave systems, new abilities, a crafting system that makes the durability mechanic suck less, new characters, new ways of earning korok seeds, the president hudson puzzles, the shrines are all different (and overall more difficult, thankfully) … there’s so much new, unique stuff in this game that it’s sometimes overwhelming to me, and I 100%ed BOTW twice. I think you’re over-fixating on the fact that the games have the same engine.

Supa,

Yeah but some of that stuff doesn’t really do anything for me. The depths are alright, the sky map is too empty, with most of the islands looking nearly the exact same, the caves all have the same look. The abilities are cool, crafting is cool, new characters are nice. I hate everything about korok seeds, and the Hudson puzzles can easily be cheesed to the point that you can use the same solution for almost all of them.

turkalino,
@turkalino@lemmy.yachts avatar

Ah, well then it sounds like a lot of the new stuff just doesn’t go along with your tastes/play style. Nothing wrong with that. Meanwhile, I can’t help but explore every square inch, so the Korok seeds are a nice bonus for that; and I’m an engineer so I like coming up with crazy alternative solutions to the Hudson puzzles and shrines

SandLight, (edited )

I agree. I played the heck out of it and really got my money’s worth, but much of that time spent playing I couldn’t help but feel it would have been better if

A) I hadn’t played BotW

B) I had skipped most of the side questing (except for the sky which was the best parts of the game imo) and just powered through the main story beats.

I felt like I had done all the sky content in my first 1/4 of the game except for the [Spoiler Area] which was a real shame.

PULSAR is pretty amazing if you have a few friends to play with. It really feels like actually running a spaceship together. You can shout things like “Divert all power to main turrets” and actually mean that.

FrozenLama,

Pulsar is the game that I feel like was so close to being a great game but they gave up on it before it got there. Working together to run the ship is awesome but the world is SOOO empty. Like at least add mod support so folks can help or something. I want to love the game but that always stops me.

isosphere,

I’m too early in the game to know this well, but I feel the lack of mod support. This feels like a game that would really thrive with community support, but they have no plans on supporting mods or open sourcing it. They are currently working on a new project that they haven’t elaborated on yet.

Still, I got this game for $14 and if I can find some people to play with I’m absolutely going to get my money’s worth - this kind of game just doesn’t exist with this level of depth. I love the technical detail of how the ship works on and how the systems interact with each other.

isosphere,

I just got this game and I’m having a blast, this is the style of game I’ve been hungry for for a long time.
