Why not start a full fledged blog site? Using Jekyll is pretty easy and free to deploy.

*I’m a ‘Miss’, not ‘bro’!

And thanks, that’s really kind of you!

I guess…well I’ve thought of it a few times, but in the end (and don’t judge me, hubris coming here) the idea that there might be one extra reason to come to Lemmy - to bring even a few extra people in to the fediverse, well that makes me happy.

Its an over estimation of my posts’ worth (I see quite regular down votes), but I like that this is where you’d find my posts.

…if that makes any sense? Anyway, I have considered it many times.

farcaster,

Yeah this is a great writeup. First time I noticed it. I’d follow your blog on RSS for sure.

GreyEyedGhost,

If you haven’t seen her other posts, I’d jump on her profile and read it. There are 7 more of these out there!

And they won’t stop coming!!!

alehel,

Yes, I’d much rather these be on Lemmy! I don’t want yet another blog to bookmark. By being on Lemmy I also catch new posts pretty quickly in my feed.

caseyweederman,

Sorry! Sorry. Miss bro.

Elevator7009,

Nice to find another woman on the Fediverse. Usually I don’t mind male-dominated environments as long as nobody treats me badly once they know I’m female, but the small amount of participants in !otomegames and !infinitynikki (both communities for games that are aimed at women) makes me wish for more women here. Meanwhile the gender-neutral !automationgames attracted a lot more attention.

Glitch,

I was just thinking I’d like this as an RSS feed!

Elevator7009, (edited ) do games w Here is my video! Please no hate

Oh boy.

I want to support content creators, especially the ones willing to post to Lemmy.

This also reminds me of kids just trying out creative pursuits for the first time, what with “Please no hate” in the title instead of using the title like an actual title and asking commenters to be gentle in the post body. Not wanting hate is just a normal and understandable desire, so I feel bad for even saying that, but I also only ever saw that kind of thing in the title of a post when I was 9 and looking at stuff fellow kids put online. Most creators, even those seeking feedback (and I’ve seen a lot of those), will put a request to be gentle in the post body. Their title actually tells you about their content and tries its damndest to appeal to you.

“Tell me what do you think about this video” also isn’t 100% perfect English. I mean, who among us hasn’t made a screwup before with the English language? But somehow this just… really reminds me of kids trying out creative pursuits for the first time. I can’t really explain it.

I think I’m also expecting a description of what your video is even about in the body, and your message could apply to any video uploaded. A makeup tutorial, a math lesson, an avant-garde art piece… I assume it has to do with gaming given you posted it in !gaming, but that is all I know. Something about this just feels weird and wrong and I figured I might as well help you (since you did ask for feedback) by trying to explain why I feel so, so offput by this post.

Also, I opened the video, saw the hashtag, and thought “oh that guy that person on Lemmy was trying to promote,” had a hunch, and checked your profile to find you are that person on Lemmy who was promoting him. So I admit I have that experience coloring my perception of your post.

TheCatGameCompany,

Thank you! The title was supposed to say/mean please no unreasonable hate. I meant that the hate had to be reasoned. This lack of skill to write what I mean takes us to your next point. My English is pretty bad because English is not my main language that I speak. I probably know the parts where you thought that my english was bad and to be honest I admit that when I wrote the script to the text to speech bot I didn’t realize how dumb it was going to sound. I’ll try better in the future!

Elevator7009,

My earlier comment almost had a section that said “and if English is your second language, sorry in advance about all the incorrect assumptions! Learning a second language is difficult.”

Best wishes! I do think you would find better reception if you put more information about what you are posting about in the title and body.

Hey, just clicked on something in this series of posts for the first time. Genuinely, thanks for your effort in writing it. I usually see link posts, and I have missed big original writeups like this. We need more people like you on Lemmy.

Re: slowdown, I use Lemmy exclusively via browser and it’s a very smooth experience for me ;)

]ANYWAY, to the point, I really enjoyed this video from Fastminer07 on YouTube, it was clear and reiterates how important this is. Worth a look if you’re searching for interseting videos for your down-time](www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Ih__mE05c)

Might want to turn that first bracket to be an opening bracket so the link works.

I’m not a perfect being so I use Steam out of convenience instead of GOG, though I do have a GOG account. I am pleased to see good news from them and that they are maintaining a good library of games. It is nice to see the option that I think people choose in an effort to be anti-DRM and to support games preservation doing well.

I should probably look into the Switch emulator thing more, sounds ripe for an original !hobbydrama post.

politicsI guarantee Musk chose DOGE as the name to seem like some cutting edge internet maverick making a throwback to the meme, but it just… It doesn’t feel appropriately playful, like the actual CAN-SPAM act from the US government before he came around. It feels incredibly illegitimate, “stop trying to be cool,” and that’s putting aside any personal political beliefs I have about how it actually is an illegitimate department. I’m not sure why that got included in a gaming news post, though, to be honest politics is stressful. I do keep up to date, but having it show up in a gaming newsletter when it is not directly connected to gaming, even in what seems to be an agreement with my views, does not feel awesome. And no, it’s not an “ew politics” because it does not affect me, I stand to be very affected. I just have to be incredibly disciplined about my intake of political content to not be constantly stressed and dooming and scrolling nowadays, especially given how I stand to be affected, and reminders outside of Politics Time make me unhappy. Of course, it is your post in the end and you provided a lot of wonderful content :P I usually just make basic link or image posts or ask simple questions, I’m no creator.

Recently picked up shapez.io again, part of the !automationgames genre. Just started that community. Also currently playing !infinitynikki (which at least one person on Lemmy mistook for a waifubait anime gacha game with straight male gaze fanservice going off the community icon, which I think earned it a bunch of downvotes when promoted in !newcommunities. When to be honest, it is the opposite: still an open world gacha game, but marketed at women. No romance featured, no sexualized fanservice, but a lot of pretty outfits to dress up in with nice hair and dress physics), !pokemon, and Antimatter Dimensions which is in the !incremental_games genre. I have several !otomegames that I kind of just stopped midway through even though they were enjoyable; likewise with the !crpg Dragon Age: Origins. I enjoy the above listed genres and games, as well as !citybuilders, !tycoon or management games, and !lifesimulation games. There are other games I enjoy too but this is sort of turning into my subscribed communities list, and I’m not currently playing them right now 😅 I game on Linux (PC only, not in the market for a console, however Steam trying to sell the Steam Deck and then doing the whole Proton thing to try to make more games compatible with their Linux-based console means that suddenly a lot more games are playable on Linux so I’m grateful for that), iOS, and MacOS. Lutris has been very helpful for finding different emulators on Linux.

For transparency, I mod !automationgames and !otomegames but not the rest, and I want to help the other Fediverse communities I listed grow. I like those genres but am not super knowledgeable about any of them and like seeing recommendations and discussion about them.

You seem to emulate a lot on Steam Deck (right?). May I ask how smooth the emulation of Switch games goes?

I have been heavily debating between Switch OLED and the Steam Deck (and then emulate Switch games). But keep hearing different things about how smooth things run.

Steam deck going to cost €700 while Switch €550 (switch + get someone to mod it).

Also; I assumed that BlueSky can see posts from Mastodon but unfortunately can’t find you through BlueSky.

PerfectDark, (edited )
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

The Switch can be a hard one to say. If you get the last release (the ‘Early Access’) of Yuzu, and you use the GreemDev build of Ryujinx he maintains now (he was a Dev of Ryujinx proper, before it closed shop) - then you’ll be totally fine.

Even tricky games such as ToTK have dedicated mod packs like this one known as the optimizer (which is which greatly improve performance, heck I even wrote my own mods to make it play well.

I had a vast Switch collection before my Steam Deck, which I then sold because I emulated it all on the Deck so well.

Then you’ll find titles like BoTW which play far, far better through Cemu. Cemu emulates Wii U games, and Breath of The Wild on the Steam Deck is perfection - high FPS, higher resultion, mods, you can even tweak how much or how little cell shading you have, or fog on the landscape. It is the single best way to play BoTW.

In the end, I’d recommend a Steam Deck. You get:

  • your Steam library
  • GOG, Epic and Amazon titles through Heroic or Junk Store
  • emulating every system through RetroDECK, with fun things like Retro Achievements, mods, texture packs etc

My biggest two issues I’ve found on specific Switch games has been Tears, which doesn’t run perfectly (but is playable) and Metroid Prime Remaster (there is a literally fraction split-second load time at each door)

I’d recommend the Steam Deck, because it can do so much more. If you have specific questions, you can reach me on Matrix if you’d like!

And definitely Cemu for BoTW, its like an entirely different experience, and its the same game as on Switch!!!

ModernRisk,

As I’m uncertain how strict this instance is regarding sailing high seas, I’ll just mention that 95% of my games are through sailing the seas including emulating.

I’d recommend a Steam Deck

Alright! I will message you on Matrix but if it is okay, it’ll be on Saturday or Sunday due to work.

Heavy emulator user here, the Deck made my Switch obsolete but I did play Tears of the Kingdom on my PC so I can run it at 60fps. On the Deck, ToTK can struggle to reach even 30 in many areas without community modpacks. Smaller titles like the latest Zelda and Metroid run flawlessly.

However, the Deck can also run every other console up until Switch/PS3/Xbox 360 as well as my full Steam and GOG library and it has a full desktop on it.

If you don’t mind the tinkering to get the emulators configured, the Deck is a no-brainer for me.

If you want to save some money, you can also get the smaller Steam Deck. It is trivially easy to swap the SSD if you later decide you need more storage.

ModernRisk,

Oh wow, that the Steam Deck had such an effect on the usage of the switch.

If you don’t mind the tinkering to get the emulators configured, the Deck is a no-brainer for me

I don’t really mind tinkering with it, already know my ways with emulation on PC. However, I have no knowledge on Linux and that’s what worries me a bit.

However, the Deck can also run every other console up until Switch/PS3/Xbox 360

So the Steam Deck can run the PS2 emulation and play these games (just as the PC can?).

Most of the games of the Switch I’d like to play are the Mario games. I can name them all if necessary but will do it later (at the moment at work).

On the Deck, ToTK can struggle to reach even 30 in many areas without community modpacks.

Can the Steam Deck run Breath of the Wild without issue?

If you know your way around PC emulation, you’re not going to have any problems. EmuDeck takes care of installing all emulators. You only have to manually add your key files, firmware, BIOS, etc. It works just like on Windows and the KDE desktop is in many ways identical to Windows.

www.emudeck.com

You might also want to check out KDE Connect. It is pre-installed on the Deck and can pair with your PC for remote input, file sharing, etc.: kdeconnect.kde.org

So the Steam Deck can run the PS2 emulation and play these games (just as the PC can?).

Yes, the Deck is an emulation beast. Finished Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Ico, Wind Waker HD and Echoes of Wisdom entirely on the Deck.

Most of the games of the Switch I’d like to play are the Mario games. I can name them all if necessary but will do it later (at the moment at work).

The less demanding games like the Mario Party games and Mario Kart run with no issues in all emulators.

For more demanding games like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey, you might want to grab the last yuzu EA AppImage that released. You can find it quite easily by searching but you can also DM me if you need it.

For reference, the last release was version 4176 with an MD5 checksum of 9f20b0e6bacd2eb9723637d078d463eb.

Can the Steam Deck run Breath of the Wild without issue?

There are 3 ways to play Breath of the Wild on the Deck:

  • Ryujinx/Ryubing (installed by EmuDeck out of the box)
  • yuzu (no longer available)
  • Cemu (the Wii U version)

I spent dozens of hours in Breath of the Wild on the Deck in yuzu to collect a few Koroks when I’m bored. Since I dumped my savegames from my switch, I just started where I left it on my Switch.

Ryujinx unfortunately struggles running Breath of the Wild, it runs the most demanding areas at about 20 fps. Which is on par with how the Switch natively runs the game but yuzu can reach 30 fps easily in those areas. Ryujinx also has quite severe shader stuttering when first entering an area, which yuzu does not have.

Cemu runs the game flawlessly, but it is the Wii U version. Doesn’t make much difference which version you play on PC since you can mod either to look good. I just played on yuzu because my savegame was from my Switch.

I love these posts, but I need to make a bug report for the Boost app, because for some reason these posts are unreadable in that app. Scrolling is just way to sluggish. Not sure if it’s the length, or number of images.

PerfectDark,

Drat! I had users complain last time about Boost. It has to be the amount of images / GIF inclusion I have in these, but using Thunder and Jerboa, I see zero slow-down, so it has to be specific to Boost!

@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been playing another lap through the old Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and just got my party kitted out with +1/+2 weapons and better armor, so this ought to be the point where the rest of the game gets way easier.

I’m coming up on the end of the base game of Borderlands 2, as I try to make my way through the series before the fourth game launches this fall. There’s a lot of Borderlands 2 DLC to get through after this, but it’s scratching an itch that the FPS genre hasn’t really been doing for me with new releases in years.

And I’ve also been making my way through the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance (this one on GOG). It’s sort of flip flopping on how important the simulation aspects of the game are to its whole deal. I too found them frustrating, but I know from Red Dead Redemption II that, when done right, they’re there to make you make choices that that character would make in that setting. However, sometimes the game hops over them in the interest of time, and other times it makes you go through them to the point of tedium. It’s still early going in the grand scheme of things, and the political intrigue has surely grabbed me if nothing else.

With a name like Perfect Dark, what are your expectations for the new one? The demo they showed was vague enough that it could be just about anything, and I get the sense that it won’t launch with split screen multiplayer or even a deathmatch mode, because no one does those anymore.

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

I think I found KCD II easier to sink into than the first. The first one I played maybe 10 hours of and kinda walked away. I told myself it was too open-ended. Maybe I need a little structure to my games to make me feel less overwhelmed?

That turned out to be obvious nonsense though, since the second is even more open-ended and I just love it. Like I said though, I really found I needed mods to make it less like ‘work’. But I know I am in the minority because it’s not as the developers wanted it to be.

I’m…waiting for more before I can really form an opinion on Perfect Dark. I adore how it kinda feels like a loose spiritual successor to Deus Ex, if that makes sense? I’m hoping it stays true to what the original was. Weirdly I feel like Selaco gave me similar feelings of ‘high-tech-corpo-espionage/action’ that Perfect Dark once did, though it’s a completely different game.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I’m definitely keeping an eye on Selaco, but I’ll wait until it leaves early access.
