MimicJar, do games w what video game deserves to be in a museum?

Assuming a single game, Minecraft. It should be a kids museum style where you can build things. You can make each room a different biome or structure.

How about … All of them?!?

mechoman444, do games w what video game deserves to be in a museum?

So many people in this thread just listing games they like and don’t know what museums are for.

Zanmato, do gaming w A game, or series of, you believe belongs in a museum?

Devil May Cry, definitely! Something that begun as one of many RE4’s demos, ended up as an inspiration for other series, such as Bayonetta!

Dark Souls: it proved that gamers are still craving challenge and created its own genre as well.

Metroid & Castlevania: without them, we wouldn’t have one of the greatest genres of all time!

Onimusha: my favourite one. It’s a living proof that hope dies last. We’ll get another entry after 20 years! (Dawn of Dreams was released on 2006)

To get the obvious out of the way: Pacman, Doom 2, Starcraft, Simcity 2000, Civ 3. All genre-defining milestones.

Total Annihilation. They're still making sequels today (Supreme Commander, Beyond all Reason).

Warzone 2100 was the first 3D rotatable zoomable RTS which was pretty mind blowing at the time.

ChicoSuave,

Civ 3? Outside of introducing strategic resources, it is difficult to think of what innovation Civ3 brought to the franchise. Civ 2? Absolutely. Civ 4? I can totally see it. What makes Civ 3 stand out?

If anything, Civ1 should be the milestone for creating a genre.

Civ 3 was the first one I played so it sticks in my mind the most, that's all. Any of the Civs would be fine.

I do feel like Civ 3 was a big step up in visual effects, though.

zod000,

Civ 3 was the first game in the series that didn’t feel like a big improvement (graphics aside of course). but you always love your first Civ.

ramenshaman,

Fuck yes Total Annihilation. BAR is already amazing and last time I played it it was still in alpha.

Star Raiders for the Atari 400/800.

MunkysUnkEnz0,

That was the first game that scared the shit out of me.

Granted, it was a jump scare, but it got me good…

zod000,

I had that game for the Atari 2600 and unlike E.T, it was a great game.

Terraria, a monument to indie games and the craft itself, gave tons of free content and still does, unlike the popular pay for expansion models on a half finished buggy game of their contemporaries

Also Journey and Flower for different reasons

Great write up! There were a small number of items in the descriptions that I didn't know what they were, for example RNG and Eurojank

atomicpoet,

RNG = random number generator. In gaming, this just means random chance. Whenever loot drops, critical hits land, enemies spawn, or dice rolls decide outcomes, that’s RNG at work.

Eurojank is a term for European-developed games (usually from Central or Eastern Europe) that are ambitious, creative, and full of unique ideas… but also full of technical rough edges.

Thoath,
Thoath,

It’s too late, accept history

zod000,

I still have my copy in my own little museum in my office with some of my favorite (or in this case most notorious) games. Does that count?

Thoath,

Yes, however the Smithsonian also counts, which is also where a cart is…and the Henry Ford museum…and the museum of Failure:3

Nice. Didn’t know thag PRPGs are a thing. I take it that Gothic would qualify although it is German?

What about dungeon crawlers, like Ultima, Lands of Lore or Might & Magic? To me they seem to be very distinct from isometric CRPGs.

atomicpoet, (edited )

There’s a lot of subgenres I wanted to include, but I felt this document was already too long. Here’s more of them:

  • DBRPG = Deck-building RPG
  • SurRPG = Survival RPG
  • RLRPG = Rogue-like RPG
  • SLRPG = Souls-like RPG

I don’t know why I overlooked GRPGs since Germany has some pretty important ones. You mentioned Gothic, but there’s also both the Sacred series and ELEX series.

I’d say that while both GRPGs and PRPGs are releated to each other, there’s some big differences that go beyond nationality. I’d say GRPGs are more like a muddy Renaissance faire going on while PRPGs have more of a storybook style.

EDIT: In the interest of thoroughness, I added even more subgenre acronyms.
