2016 had the perfect balance between story and gameplay to me, in that the player character expressed flagrant disregard for any narrative elements. This was doom 1 af.

Just keep moving and turn the bad guys into chunks. Need nothing more.

I fucking hated the loop in eternal. I get that the developers wanted you to play in a specific way, they partially achieved this through arbitrary mechanics like ammo scarcity. I can appreciate that it’s a good game, but I didn’t get on with it.

The art style went full Hollywood horror, and the exposition was kinda dialed up to eleven by contrast to its direct predecessor. Very much disliked that you couldn’t crouch (definitely more of a me issue, though I think sliding is a missed opportunity in Eternal’s movement repertoire).

2016’s PvP was imperfect but still fun and much appreciated. Snapmap was super underrated and has many sick community made levels.

The later games are a phenomenal technical showcase; the absolute posterchild for the Vulkan gfx API, but it’s not very ‘doom’ in spirit to me any more

They don’t. Doomguy does like two things in the very beginning, but it’s not like they don’t care, but rather about what Hayden has to say and his justifications for everything that has happened, that’s the part which he doesn’t want.

You meet Hayden later in his office, with a few minutes unskippable “cutscene,” but it’s not like Doomguy ignores him or jumps out of a window in the middle of it.

fair enough, it’s still in stark contrast to all of eternal’s exposition, which was pretty hard to watch (the Colosseum scenes especially).

That’s not to say the story isn’t good or interesting,

I’ve been pretty busy over the last couple of weeks, so gaming has been very sparse… But, the other day I picked up “The Slormancer” which is an ARPG created by a team of two indie developers.

I absolutely love it so far! Plays fantastic on the Steam Deck too (and really almost feels like it was made for the OLED Deck). I only have three and a half hours so far in it, but it’s very much giving me “Just one last round” vibes, which are my favorite kinds of games.

AC: Shadows, still enjoying it after ~28 hours. Couldn’t finish Valhalla due to it just having too much of everything, let’s see if this one’s different. Also, started playing Doom Dark Ages, seems fun!

I agree that some more modes would be nice, but bear in mind the version is still 0.1.2 so there’s plenty more to come, it’s just not finished yet.

I do like the new map, although I miss opening doors on that one haha

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah, definitely keeping the version in mind lol. I never actually noticed the doors until you pointed it out. It really doesn’t have any doors. The closest thing is the vents i think

donuts,

Yeah the vents are a fun addition, albeit somewhat slow as you have to crawl through them.

There was one vent that took me through a small alcove with dangerous goop, to another vent that took me to one of those horses. Safe to say we didn’t get it down without damaging it considering we were up way high and that thing is heavy af.

Still, fun times

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

The horse is a pain to move (in a fun way). I was just moving one a few hours ago while playing with friends and it was still a pain with 4 strength upgrades. To make matters worse we had a robe right up our ass and everyone else was dead. I ended up getting it to the extraction point but died to the extractor when i tried to adjust the horse further in after realizing it would get crushed

donuts,

Hahaha that sounds like classic REPO. I’m really amazed by the simplicity of the game and how long it stays fun, especially for the price

Don’t think it’s a game for me or my friends but I am very happy for the devs to have this success with their new game. They deserve it considering how good their previous game was even if it wasn’t as hyped. Very passionate people.

Strider, do games w I'm a console gamer so, Why the hate on the Epic Games Store?

Competition is good, yes and no.

Exclusivity is not competition, it’s lock in for me. So epic should get it’s head out of its ass and offer games on both platforms equally. THAT is competition.

I am not a fan of steam. Not a fan of having a library that could change at anytime at anyone’s whim but mine. So I prefer gog (yes I know some titles are drm free on steam and it’s not perfect on gog either / this is just for context).

Anyhow steam is well established and forcing me to use your store and launcher will just lead to me ignoring you (doing that for origin, uplay, epic) because it’s a luxury problem.

Same with all that streaming shit. Also there are other ways if you piss off people a lot, yarr!

The companies forget who made them big. And for epic I count myself in on that massively, still owning game boxes of e.g. Xargon (look it up, and my EU? box is not to be found on ebay) and equally for EA.

And I will not stand for anti consumer behaviors. Got enough money to spend at my age but theyre not getting it like this.

DeathsEmbrace,

Epic wants temporary monopolies and that’s already antitrust.

I’ve been playing Xenoblade Chronicles X.

The combat is pretty fun. It’s a bit more complex than the other two Xenoblade games I played (1 and 2), as there are more support skills you can use and overdrive requires a bit of planning. Enemies also have breakable parts, which add a bit of decision making during combat, although it does still feel a bit passive as there aren’t many enemy mechanics to interact with.

Very minor progression spoilerI have unlocked the Skell after ~30 hours and it was pretty underwhelming. Grounded combat feels more fun and it’s pretty disappointing that you can’t customize much of the mech’s aesthetics apart from color (and I’m not a huge fan of the designs).

The main story is fine and the sidequests are pretty good. They are very short, but they have interesting stories. The “affinity” quests feel like they are the focus of the game instead of the main story.
