I just hope they've put in a testing procedure.
i don't understand how they can be releasing updates so frequently.
the game wont get less bugged if they're just playing whack-a-mole.
relying on user testing is okay when its in pre-release. but by now they should be testing properly before releasing updates.
The only “pre-order” I’ve ever done was Elden Ring, and that was only the day before release because there was a small discount on it. I was definitely going to play it anyway, so I would have been spending the money regrardless. I’m usually pretty patient in terms of gaming.
Hyping up old features as if they’re groundbreaking is a proud Bethesda tradition. I still remember laughing at their pre-release hype around the Radiant quest randomizer in Skyrim, which is virtually identical to the quest randomizer that Daggerfall had been built around fifteen years prior.
The studio has changed. Just because Fallout 4 wasn't a "true RPG" doesn't mean I didn't have nigh on 400 hours of novel joy with it, maybe even because it wasn't just another core Bethesda RPG but because it was something new, a new kind of looting and crafting experience in that same large, dynamic open world that Bethesda could bring through. Morrowind was over 20 years ago. Bethesda isn't the one making those kinds of games anymore.
Have the games gotten shallower as RPGs? Sure. Fucking pac man is shallow at this point, does that mean everyone should hate on it en masse? If you don't like the direction Bethesda is going that's completely understandable, but it just seems absurd that people come out of the woodwork in these threads to just poop on a game that isn't even out yet. Save that for when it releases and it does or doesn't meet your expectations, as of now it just sounds like everybody is trying to get as entrenched as possible in their prejudice.
Bethesda games are buggy, what an old meme. It's more of a meme than a true criticism now because most games have bugs, especially ones as large as Bethesda games, and even on launch I've played other Bethesda games and enjoyed myself just fine. It's good to be cautiously skeptical and not pre order, you should be skeptical, but swinging all the way past that to being hard-line negative is not the right answer either.
And I know you personally are not reflecting all of these views, your comment just comes off as supportive of both genuine and over the top memetic criticisms due to replying in a seemingly justifying manner to someone confused about the buggy game comments. When it comes to those sorts of comments I'm talking generally about what I've seen from people on this platform.
I'm not saying Starfield will be an old Bethesda return to form or bug free on release, I'm just saying be cautious, not completely pedal to the metal negative, and accept that Bethesda as it was is dead.
Hire more staff to do more development/QA in a shorter timespan
Delay release schedule to not be annual releases
Reduce game scope to something the team can accomplish
Gamefreak cannot keep its historically small team size while trying to make large, open world titles that release annually. Tears of the Kingdom tool over 5 years to develop, and that was working with pre-existing assets. Gamefreak's model is not sustainable.
Larian has delayed the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, currently on pace to possibly be 2023’s Game of the Year, until they can figure out how to make split-screen work on Series S.
Well this is concerning. I’ve got a PS5 and was going to buy a XSX this week so I could pre-order Starfield, now I might wait and see how this plays out. What’s going to happen with Starfield & Elder Scrolls 6 (whenever it’s released)? The Series S is going to fuck up everything.
While Baldur's Gate 3 is being widely celebrated by fans and developers alike, some are panicking that this could set new expectations from fans. Good.
Larian has been absolutely phenomenal through their process on both of these. Kept with the ‘it’ll release when it’s ready’ model, the exception with the alpha/early release on BG3 which I would say helped improve the quality of the Release product that much more, through testing/reports and cash influx without the ‘pre-order today, get whatever you get tomorrow’ mantra.
I think Dreams would also have done much better with a major underlying game instead of advertising itself as effectively a game engine you can’t profit from. LBP, Mario Maker, Halo, Far Cry, and others have an appeal to them because they’re complete titles that people enjoy, but have level editors (or are the level editor in the case of Mario) that allow players to easily express their creativity given the rules and assets of these games. I haven’t ever launched Dreams, but I’m over the moon waiting for Restitched. Brings me back to the days of waiting for my LBP pre-order to release.
Could it be that the hard core Baldur’s Gate fans are OG/serious Gamers and have learned to not pre-order? BG 1 & 2 were released way before gaming was mainstream. Most of the casual gamers probably only care about BG3 due to hype from other gamers who would also be “Never Pre-order” folk.
As the title says. I severely dislike having to make accounts for every game publisher that wants to send me advertisements, collect data or whatever....
If Todd Howard’s hyping of Oblivion, Fallout3, Fallout4, and Skyrim have taught me anything - the game will come nowhere to delivering anything promised - will be massively buggy - and I’ll easily sink 100s of hours into the game not caring in the least bit and having a blast the entire time. Purchasing it again and again on every platform as the years pass. Though with gamepass I suppose I don’t have to worry about purchasing it anymore.
While Morrowind was my entry into the series in 2002/2003 - I had never heard of it until my head chef at the time told me I needed to purchase it. His hype delivered. But I have no clue what the hype of Morrowind pre-release was like or what was promised vs delivered. But I imagine it was quite similar.
I think there’s a good chance that they fuck it up as bad as 76. I’m willing to be proven wrong, Bethesda as a company hasn’t done much to convince me otherwise. I’ll be honest, their acquisition by Microsoft has only given me more monumental doubts. I think the biggest thing Bethesda has going for it right now is pedigree and the fact that the release of their last big series entry was so long ago that people are forgetting how terrible not just the releases were, but they way they handled them as a company, especially where the pre-order merch was concerned.
"Today, PlayStation revealed that its PS5 has sold 40 million units. Microsoft doesn’t share hardware numbers typically, but court documents, math, and slides from an ID@Xbox in Brazil seem to suggest the Xbox Series X|S line-up is around 20-23 million units sold globally. That essentially puts the PS5 at a 2:1 advantage...
Can’t compete… because Sony is paying publishers to make games exclusive for the PS5.
As a PC gamer at heart exclusives suck.
Over the years I almost bought a console on a few occasions due to exclusives, or games shipping first on console.
Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV, then GTA V.
By the time RDR2 came out I had bought an Xbox One S - because it was the cheapest 4K BD player on the market.
Oh, the irony. Still haven’t bought a 4K BD. Prices were ridiculous. Probably still are. Found that 4K streaming titles on Apple TV were so good I didn’t need better than that.
But since stumbling into the One S led me to buy RDR2 on release day.
Halfway through I upgraded to the One X, and when Series X came out I had it less than a month later after putting in a pre-order about a month before release.
A colleague who pre-ordered PS5 six months before I even thought about the Series X had to wait 7 months from release for his.
Awww… Come on… Bloodlines was built on something akin to a pre-release of the Source engine. Cut them a little slack on the bugs, it could only ever be a flawed gem.
I got a Quest 2 a while back and played around with it a bit. There were some entertaining games like “I expect you to die” and the first portion of “Lone Echo”, but mostly they just felt like proof of concept demos and I quickly lost interest....
I just made a comment about this on Kbin last night! I play on the reverb G2, but you should be able to play on Steam with the Q2 no problem. It’s a copy paste, so if something seems off it’s due to the context of the other post!
Here’s some of my favorites:
Vertical Shift: fairly short and barebones but it’s got a full range of powers for you to play with around an open world. Fun VR mechanics worth the sale price, despite the minimal gameplay.
You mentioned Boneworks and Phasmophobia which are also both a lot of fun, but motion sickness and multiplayer can make them not as convenient to always be ready to play. Of course, if we mention Boneworks then we have to talk about Duck Season. Blade and Sorcery should be on the list as well, it’s just too good to pass up. And well, if we’re talking about B&S we can’t ignore GORN.
Pistol Whip is basically a rhythm John Wick simulator. Very worth the cost of the game, lots of content, multiple free content updates - just a stellar game through and through. Also much more engaging than BeatSaber IMO, never been a fan of flailing my arms to slash blocks on beat. But shooting and dodging? Give me more!
Bonus: They just released a map creator. The life of the game is virtually infinite now, so that’s exciting :)
Superhot VR pre-content removal. Still a great game without the ending though.
V-Racer Hoverbike is a great VR game oriented Hoverbike Racing. Great sense of speed and feel, motion sickness is somewhat a given given the nature of the game…
Rez Infinite for anyone who remembers Rez for the PS2.
Pavlov VR is also a good popular fun game for your VR FPS itches. For more, there’s Into the Radius, Arizona Sunshine, ARK and ADE, Naked Sun, Bandit Point, Risk of Rain 2 VR (mod).
Speaking of mods, Subnautica in VR…
And one of my favorite pass-times, Holo-ball! It’s basically racquetball :)
There’s a couple party games that are fun as well, Wii Sports style with Pure Bowl VR, NVIDIA’s VR Funhouse, Tennis Arcade VR. All pretty decent (particularly compared to others that are available). Oh, also check out VRNoid which has brickbreaker and Hyper Psychic Gauntlets for a unique game. You can also play all your NES roms in VR with 3DSenVR which is pretty awesome. While we’re here, give Metroid Prime a playthrough with Dolphin VR, or all 3 if you get it running :)
Then there’s the whole world of productivity/not quite gaming programs.
I love, love love SynthVR. It’s just one of the smartest uses for VR, period. Create your virtual environment and just make it a giant music setup. Absolutely stellar. Similarly, Vinyl Reality for using your own music to DJ and mix! There’s also a drumming program called Paradiddle which is awesome for the same reasons. For painting, Vermillion.
If you’ve got a HOTAS or a racewheel there’s also a number of games that work great in tandem, Elite Dangerous for your space trucker sims (for this one, be sure to get SCRCPY for your android phone and run XS Overlay or OVR Toolkit to bring your phone with you in VR), Star Wars Squadrons, Drone Hero.
I’ve been really enjoying it so far, but there are certain aspects that could use more polish. Like some textures in scenes that could use more love, or when the end of a quest boots you to the overworld map but you only have one location you can choose. In that instance it should just load you into the next area rather than put you on a map with a bunch of crossed out areas. That being said, I don’t mind the overworld map as a mechanic at all.
Past that, the combat is fun and the world feels very “Final Fantasy” which I haven’t felt in a while (other than FFXIV). I’ve never played Kingdom Hearts but I’ve played most of the FF games and I don’t mind that they chose to go full action in this one. It feels like it fits the game well, at least in my opinion. There are definitely periods with less/no side quests but in those instances, just play through the story. It’s not going to compare to the amount of quests FFXIV had, and that’s okay.
The graphics are certainly similar to FFXIV, but for the most part I think they look better. Same with the music, I haven’t examined each track and compared it to FFXIV but while playing it felt familiar but new. I didn’t notice any similarities with animations, but that could just be me.
I have not finished the game yet, but am looking forward to playing through it. Furthermore, I plan to play through New Game + as well, which is rare for me personally.
When the first trailer for this game came out I basically went media blackout on it until the game demo was released. I find I’ve been doing this more and more with games and movies lately, it makes the whole experience better. No overhype, no pre-orders, no spoilers, less disappointment.
It may not be 10/10 but in my opinion it’s damn close.
What was promised where? Because yeah, get capable technical team together who are excited to share a project they’re working on, and they are bound to be optimistic about what could be realistically implemented over a long timeframe. Nothing but the official release product information should be considered a promise, and nothing but unsponsored, unaffiliated reviews should be taken as proof.
I highly doubt that any pre-launch ‘promises’ were made with an intention to decieve.
Stuff like this is the reason game companies continue to release unfinished games, they're breaking even before they even release. Stop pre-ordering games people!
No way am I going to pre-order a game in this era of half baked releases and especially not a game from Bethesda which is as well known for their rampant bugs as their compelling gameplay
