TheOneCurly, w Visions of a larger plunder
@TheOneCurly@lemmy.theonecurly.page avatar

Unless they start offering on-prem or there are some very high profile server hacks I don’t see that being possible. Unlike media and client software they don’t need to provide the core functionality to end users, just the output.

aldalire,

I agree. As for the how, it’s gonna be tricky to say the least

You can start by using the same data sources they do. Several had admitted to using Books3.

empireOfLove, w What are the ways to play minecraft offline (single player)?
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

Mineshafter[dot]info is what I used to use back in my cracked minecraft days. It basically provides a modified launcher that patches itself and the Minecraft JAR to look for the Mineshafter login servers instead of Microsoft’s. It lets you use singleplayer as well as multi-player on cracked servers that do not force online authentication.

The site is still up and paid for, which means someone still gives a shit about it, so I think it may still be functional. I haven’t used it in literally ten years though, so I doubt it supports the latest Minecraft versions though, but you can try it. Oh God. Ten years. I’m old…

bartolomeo, w What's the best way to rip music off Spotify so that I can store it on my HDD?

Freyr is amazing.

github.com/miraclx/freyr-js

Chewy7324,

According to the readme it downloads the songs from youtube or other sources and then adds metadata after reencoding. This means tracks might include unwanted audio from a yt music video.

But I also used tools like this in the past, they work great.

Chewy7324, w What's the best way to get German content?

If you’re using Radarr/Sonarr, I can’t recommend this guide enough if you want german + english dual language media. github.com/…/radarr-sonarr-german-dual-language

Usenet is great once I got SceneNZB recommended. They include content from House of Usenet, a forum for german usenet (getting media from forums can’t be easily automated, which is the big drawback of HoU).

I also found DrunkenSlug recommended, but everything I wanted in german was also on SceneNZB anyway.

Some kind of a knock-off of Real Madrid?

Crabhands,
@Crabhands@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s a service that allows tv/movie streaming from torrents. I use it with the ‘Seren’ addon within Kodi on my HTPC/FireSticks. It’s $20/6 months, and works great. No buffering.

Mugmoor, w Good sources for obscure educational videos?
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You can name the title, that’s fine. The only thing you can’t do here is openly share links to that content (it must be encoded with base64).

When it comes to old media, especially from the early 2000’s and earlier, I start with Archive.org and YouTube.

Like /u/Sharpiemaker suggested, your library would also be a good spot to check. If you have a reference library in your system they are a goldmine for that sort of thing.

Alternatively, you can pick up a cheap capture card and record the tape to your PC.

MasterBuilder,

I have found a library that had equipment to transfer to DVD, however if the tape has copy protection it won’t work. I’ll find out. Plus, I can buy a DVD version - I found it in searches - but I already own this and don’t want to buy it again.

facow, w Having a hard time settling on a VPN
@facow@hexbear.net avatar

I use PIA because it’s cheap as dirt. I don’t use their client and I have it setup so exclusively my torrent client uses it. It works for my use case because I’m pretty much just trying to avoid nasty letters from my ISP. I wouldn’t trust them with any of my regular traffic because they’re sketchy and there’s got to be a reason they’re so cheap.

Although I would consider what your usecase for a VPN is - ie what attack vectors are you trying to protect against when using it for regular traffic? There’s arguably very little a VPN does to protect you on public WiFi and also opens you up to new risks

DonnieDarkmode,

Well my hope was that it would protect against things like packet sniffing and in case I connect to an evil twin (if I’m using that term correctly). But I’ll be the first to admit my knowledge there is incredibly limited, and I wasn’t aware that it would actually create new vulnerabilities. Would you be able to explain a bit?

I’ve used AirVPN for years. Works great

rambos,

Ive used AirVPN for months, also works great 😂

9krpm, w IPTV Setup Guide?

i use these guys: https[://]my.tvaster[.]com the yearly subscription is very cheap. i have it on a s905x4 box running coreelec and i can watch all the big games with no problems and very little delay - compared to other services. i will sometimes use a vpn due to my isp being known for using traffic shaping

CheekyYoghurts,

This provider seems to only offer mainland European channels. They also don’t provide a channel list which is very weird and somewhat suspicious. I was interested but need to know more before I pull the trigger. The site offers virtually no real information

9krpm,

try and contact them via a support ticket

CheekyYoghurts,

I could, but I shouldn’t have to.

If they’re making me jump through hoops just to find out what they’re offering, that’s a non-starter lol

MrNobody, w Finding mainstream media on usenet - am I doing it wrong?

It’s recommended to have two providers, one for monthly and one block account, on two seperate backbones. I think /r/piracy or /r/Usenet has a list, and as whirlybird mentioned just add the show to sonarr and it’ll eventually grab it.

If you don’t have any *are suite I highly recommend getting that set up. Sonarr for tv shows, radarr for movies. It’s all set and forget, just add the content you are after and the *are does the rest. You just add your indexer(s), add the provider(s) and you’re sorted.

omalaul,

Thank you for the advice! I do have sonarr running but some stuff just keeps not turning up

Gleddified, w Anti-Piracy Lessons Enter the School Curriculum: Are You a Thief?

We can teach them about how once-upon-a-time common sense copyright laws got perverted by the mouse so badly.

TheHalc, w "Copyright fuels creativity [...] promotes free speech", heh

Ah yes, a statement on copyright thanking someone for buying an authorised edition of Great Expectations, a book whose copyright expired in 1940 at the latest…

JoeCoT,
@JoeCoT@kbin.social avatar

Right, the copyright is specifically for random essays added to the book, so that they could release it and say it wasn't entirely public domain, so you shouldn't copy it. A weird place to say "copyright fuels creativity" when it's clearly not the reason for the copyright here.
