Early_To_Risa, w This community is great!

Is it weird to have subscribed even though I don’t pirate (yet)? The community seems good, and I might take the plunge eventually.

TheButtonJustSpins,

The seas be welcoming here.

Datas_Cat_Spot, w Third party Reddit apps just got canned.
@Datas_Cat_Spot@startrek.website avatar

The popularity of this community might finally get me into pirating, lol. I subbed out of curiosity.

Quill7513,

I like that this community is dedicated to the concept of piracy based on their principals. I’m not involved, but I appreciate it

beaumains,

I’m not involved either. I definitely would never do anything so abhorrent and inconsiderate of rights holders who purchased their copyrights fair and square.

Never.

Ever.

loudWaterEnjoyer, w Which VPN Providers Really Take Privacy Seriously in 2023? * TorrentFreak
@loudWaterEnjoyer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

If someone starts his list with NordVPN you know its complete and utter bullshit

Ilandar,

That’s not how the annual Torrentfreak VPN questionnaire works.

loudWaterEnjoyer,
@loudWaterEnjoyer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It doesn’t work good if they act like all those providers are a considerable choice

Ilandar,

They don’t. I suspect you haven’t actually read one of these articles in detail.because it is in no way a recommendation from TorrentFreak. It literally opens with this:

The VPN review business is also flourishing as well. Just do a random search for “best VPN service” or “VPN review” and you’ll see dozens of sites filled with recommendations and preferred picks. Some VPN companies, such as Kape, even own review sites.

At TF we don’t want to make any recommendations. When it comes to privacy and anonymity, an outsider can’t offer any guarantees. Vulnerabilities are always lurking around the corner and even with the most secure VPN, you still have to trust the VPN company with your data.

Instead, we aim to provide an unranked overview of VPN providers, asking them questions we believe are important. Many of these questions relate to privacy and security, and the various companies answer them in their own words.

We hope that this helps users to make an informed choice. However, we stress that users themselves should always make sure that their VPN setup is secure, working correctly, and not leaking. Also, we advise people to properly research the company behind the VPN service.

NordVPN appears first because it is a sponsor, as is clearly stated:

*Note: Private Internet access, ExpressVPN and NordVPN are TorrentFreak sponsors. We reserve the first three spots for them as a courtesy. This article also includes a few affiliate links which help us pay the bills. We never sell positions in our review article or charge providers for a listing.

The same questions are put to every VPN provider on the list. It is unranked - whether they first or last is completely irrelevant.

MedicareForSome, w VPN Recommendations?

Basically 3 good choices

ProtonVPN AirVPN IVPN

Proton has a 50% off student discount bringing the price down to $5 a month for all proton services.

IVPN is probably the best but most expensive.

jjffnn,

Where do you see Proton being 50% off for students?
I can’t find anything about that.

MedicareForSome,

They don’t advertise it, just message support from your .edu email and tell them your username. They’ll apply it and let you use the STUDENT promo code. It’s 50% off the year plan so $5 a month.

Starglasses, w Are most of you using Torrents or Usenet?

I’m not. What are sonarr and radarr and why do you recommend them?

stu,
@stu@lemmy.pit.ninja avatar

Sonarr and radarr manage downloads for TV and movies in a nice way for Usenet and actually torrents as well. You can set up quality profiles and choose which shows and movies you want to download and they will grab torrents/nzbs that meet your preferences, automatically start them in your torrent app or Usenet downloader, and then organize them in folders with appropriate metadata for Kodi/Plex when the downloads complete. They automate the process very nicely.

Edit, I’m a Usenet guy if that wasn’t already clear lol

Flatworm7591,

How is Usenet for privacy compared to torrents, e.g. if a usenet service you are paying for is compromised at some stage are they likely to be able to identify you based on payment data for example?

b42, w Fully understand if this is impossible, but is there any way to pirate/emulate switch games?

You definitely can! I'm using Yuzu on Linux with an jurassic 1050Ti and it works perfectly. I basically play Mario Kart 8 and BotW (for now, TotK in the queue) and never touched an actual Switch in person (seriously! I'm Brazilian and these things are hell expensive here).

will_iam90983402984,

yeah I get that, 300+ for something you’re using for maybe 2 games makes no sense

Gush,
@Gush@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t want to spend 400 and more just to play miitopia 😭

kurgal, w r/Piracy is dead, we need to build a huge community here

Steer clear of the propaganda pit that is kbin imo

pasci_lei, w I2P - A public service announcement
@pasci_lei@kbin.social avatar

@CAVOK Anonymous torrenting? Is this a fever dream?

Sharp312,
@Sharp312@lemmy.one avatar

Nope, and it’s awesome. I2P works similarly to tor except instead of being discouraged, there’s a torrent client built in. Only down side is as it’s an entirely P2P network with alot of hops (more than tor) it’s quite slow.

taaz, w OK mateys, let's talk about direct links.

This requires some significant investment in anonymity and hosting provider (these providers are 3x as expensive, yo!).

What is meant by these? Any links, I mean, pointers?
