"there hands"

"nefarious no-gooders"

"to these pirates"

"illegal files"

"of course"

Am I reading an AI trying to sound hip and trendy?

WarmSoda,

I’m assuming it’s an 80 yo on drugs.

It’s supposed to be their hands, not there, haven’t yet seen AI making mistakes on purpose but I guess it could if prompted

empireOfLove, (edited ) w Direct Downloads always lead to "check internet connection"
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

This is why internet download manager (and other, similar download manager softwares) were originally created. Download managers track the amount of a file you’ve downloaded and will repeatedly retry when interrupted without restarting from zero.

Getting Warez in the pre-P2P era meant grabbing bits and pieces over a glacial ISDN or 33.6k modem line (if you were lucky- some of us bastards got 28.8k, or even 14.4k…) Everything was “direct download”. You had to use a download manager for anything larger than 30 megabytes because the chances of your line being interrupted were very very high, either by other phone users or by your ISP booting you off because you looked like a zombie modem being connected for 24 hours straight.

They still have their place. Try something open source like JDownloader. Or just pirate the pro version of IDM.

radau, w What is your go to music grabbing solution?

Lidarr for most, soulseek (slskd) for anything Lidarr can’t get in FLAC

GammaGames, w Direct Downloads always lead to "check internet connection"

Have you tried a download manager?

tootbrute, w What is your go to music grabbing solution?

Godot is looking much better to me today than it did yesterday.

GuyFi, w What is your go to music grabbing solution?

I literally make a Spotify playlist then run it through a website that lets me download metadata and a MP3 of the song (usually it’s from YouTube). I usually look on Bandcamp for albums I like tho because .flac sounds slightly better.

7Sea_Sailor, w How would someone, hypothetically, pirate Baldur's Gate 3 without being able to torrent?

The archive you download from gog-games includes some data files and a setup.exe. You launch the setup, tell it where to install, and wait. Once it’s done, you launch the game from the start menu, and enjoy. There’s no magic to it.

oh, fascinating! thank you, sir.

7Sea_Sailor,

Keep in mind that the files received from this site are identical to the files you would get on the official store. That’s why it’s so beautiful.

Pulp, w So, Unity is charging game developers per video game install now...

Unity is the worst.

mateomaui, (edited ) w How would someone, hypothetically, pirate Baldur's Gate 3 without being able to torrent?

If you’re acquiring a GOG release somewhere, it should be the regular, normal installer because GOG releases don’t have DRM that needs cracking. Someone just needs to first get it legally from GOG and then share it somewhere. If you scan it with antivirus and it finds something, get rid of it and try another source.

Otherwise without torrenting, you’d have to find a place with direct downloads.

edit: though you may want to wait longer for them to patch more bugs etc, because if you don’t have a source to download the GOG updates only, downloading 100+ GB each time is a pain.

Lojcs, w So, Unity is charging game developers per video game install now...

I just run all games behind a firewall. Hopefully that blocks unity from learning about steam installs too.

peereboominc, w Is Direct Connect still 'a thing'?

That is a long time ago that I have heard anyone say that. Wasn’t there a client software called DC++ or something like that?

Discola,

We were using DC++ on campus to share files over twelve years ago!

iHUNTcriminals,

Yup. Where people would share their entire c drive to be able to join servers…

Their entire c drive… Everything.

HackerJoe,

That was super helpful to just grab one or two broken files from any installed software though. I just had a 250GB ISO with 2MB of compressed zeroes to get into servers with ridiculous requirements. Fun times…

atlasraven31, w Free Download Manager site redirected Linux users to malware for years

Sorry guys, I needed to download more RAM.

negativenull,

You wouldn’t download a car some RAM would you?
