Side order and mariokart be looking good. league expanding outside of their MOBA and lore expansion is cute. Probably looking to capitalism off the show. Contra looks good even if it’s not “new”. Gf texted me demanding SpyXAnya.
But Jesus there was like 3 or 4 Turn Based RPGs with medieval settings and sprite artwork. In competition with Fire Emblem how is there this many? Good for competition I guess.
These remakes (Luigi mansion 2) are great and all but it really shows that if the cartridge slot had been 3ds sized from the beginning they wouldn’t be able to sell you these games again. LM2 isn’t that old to need a remake but they EoL’d the 3ds so here we are. Pretty diverse announcement set.
Highly recommend 13 Sentinels if you’re a fan of visual novels. Simply beautiful with great music and characters. If you’re not a fan of VNs though, the RTS gameplay is so minimal that I wouldn’t bother. It’s well-designed and enjoyable but barely 10% of the runtime.
I think it’s kind of a genre revival. The genre was very under represented for a long time, so probably many devs started working on such games, and then ended up releasing them all close to each other.
Man, I learned a TON about the Caribbean sea islands and colonial era big cities from Pirates on the NES. Countless hours spent pouring over this map to find hidden treasure and hunt down leads
Maybe because of all those “Patented” points. It’s possible Nintendo doesn’t want to be 100% dependent on them and want an in-house solution to their problem.
They probably don’t want to use that particular design anyway. I’ve run into a good number of headaches with those joysticks. Not bad enough for me to pull them back out, but certainly enough to be annoying.
I’ve encountered two noticeable issues while using these. The first is probably just shit tier QA, but the second could be that or a design flaw. I haven’t taken the time to tear one apart and reverse engineer it, so I can’t say for sure what the cause is. Anywho, about a third of my sticks will wig out and send complete garbage data when they are pushed to their maximum on one axis. Sometimes it is the X, sometimes it is the Y. Either way it makes the impossible to use and I actually did remove those and replace them. Of the remaining sticks a number of them will depress the under stick button if pushed all the way in one direction. It’s pretty easy to avoid this and it rarely matters so these ones I left alone and didn’t bother to count how many displayed the behavior.
I was hoping hall effects could be the solution. Maybe best that can be hoped for is ones that can be popped out for easy replacement like the dualsense edge.
I have swapped out my Switch analogues with these, and they’re great, I also did it with my Ayn Odin, and the 2nd set had slightly stronger magnets, that caused some touch screen issues, so I swapped out my switch analogues with the odin ones. So I’m gonna guess that the next Nintendo console will be another portable, and they probably don’t want the issues of magnets near screens.
Considering at this point, I only really care about F-Zero and Star Fox’s languishing, as far as Nintendo’s catalogue is concerned; I’m just not going to hype. If something’s worth seeing in the direct, I’ll hear about it and watch it after the fact.
I don’t doubt it… Nintendo is always years behind.
The PS5 came out in 2020 and this Switch2 is probably a year away. So that would make their hardware be roughly 4 years old in terms of power. Plus if this is roughly the size of the current Switch, it won’t be pushing more than HD-resolutions (current Switch is only a 720 display), so getting PS5-level graphics on a 1080 screen these days is not particularly complicated or expensive.
Current switch does 1080 docked already , so while I hope it’ll have at least 4k menus and 4k light games, I’d settled for 1080 again with some sorta more advanced AA for first party games
God of war 2016 PS 4 original setting at 720p on steam deck is about 30 fps. On ROG Ally afew frames less if you run it at 15 watts, at 45 watts Ally can probably do 720p at 50ish fps but less than an hour of battery. Ally is the top of line 2023 AMD tech apu and cost $700. Mobile technology is amazing right now, but it’s just not at a level where it can do 3 years old desktop graphics at a reasonable cost/power consumption.
The appeal of Nintendo console is first party exclusives and whatever the new gimmick may be (I don’t mean that word as a bad thing, I have loved most of their gimmicks). Powerful hardware just means that it can potentially have a good third party support, so that you’re not left playing just the first party games.
On the one hand, I’m as tired of ports and remakes as anyone else. On the other, TTYD is a perfect RPG and the exact opposite of what they’ve done to Paper Mario for two generations, so it not only gets a pass but a big fat golden power star.
Had to happen sometime. Sad to see it come, but Charles has had a hell of a run. He will continue to be the template for Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi for the rest of the characters’ existence.
Very much, in my mind, like any new Looney Tunes voice actors are just trying to sound like Mel Blanc.
It’ll be great to hear Charles’ influence for years to come, even if he’s not doing (or doing less of) the performances anymore.
He basically invented Luigi’s personality on the fly.
Luigi was just green Mario, right until they put Martinet with a live 3D face animation rig at an event and “talk to Luigi!” was one of the options.
He then came up with Luigi as the slightly cowardly, not as confident, but good spirited and kind, companion to Mario. The voice tone, the mannerisms, he just made it all up and Nintendo loved it.
Without that, no Luigi’s Mansion and the green Mario dude would still have no personality.
Nah. Luigi had a personality prior to the 3D era. His modern portrayal is, at bare minimum, inspired by the Super Mario Adventure comics, where he was portrayed as the more cowardly of the two brothers. And that’s not even looking into things like the Super Show, which created Toad’s modern voice or the CYOA novels.
He put a voice to that persona, but he didn’t create it whole cloth.
Martinet himself explains how he made up the “cowardly” trait because at first, when people asked about Luigi, his way of dealing with it was replying that “my brother is too shy! Too scared! He can’t show up”.
Look up “potentiometers” if you want to understand the workings behind a thumbstick as well as why drift happens.
So, drift happens because the graphite resistance element inside the potentiometers wears out over time due to friction, but these potentiometers are absurdly cheap compared to the alternatives and one company, ALPS of Japan, has dominated this market (not just for the Switch but for everybody) for 20 years that they pretty much out-prices everybody else. So, now you know why companies still use these thumbsticks despite the fact that drift always develop eventually.
Hall Effect sensors are definitely better, but also tend to be heavier and bulkier, so we’ll see if this works out.
I’ve seen them, they are an order of magnitude more expensive than the potentiometer based ones. Good for enthusiast hobbyist upgrades, but I doubt Nintendo is going to go for that considering the pricetag of the Hall Effect sticks.
That’s just because there is only one company making them so… yeah we got expensive joystick replacements. If Nintendo just paid a bit more and went with the HE joysticks in the first place they wouldn’t be in this situation. Why do you think they’re patenting these joysticks with magnetic fluid in em? They don’t want this to happen again so they do what the Japanese do best, over engineer a simple solution.
As a big keyboard nerd it is cool to hear about Alps in another context. They used to dominate the mechanical keyboard market too back in the late 80s.Thanks for sharing!
This game had a shockingly good run. Obviously it’s still going to be around with repeat tours and all that, but the fact it got as many new updates as it did is pretty impressive
I hope they announce they are working on it, and it becomes a launch title for Switch 2 — along with WaveRace, baybeee. We need to be racin’ them waves.
