bayaz, w Banning spam accounts

FYI, I tried the process you mentioned, I'm not sure it's as simple as your post implies (if that process could be called "simple" anyway). I've tried a few different orders of "report, delete, ban", and clicked the "ban" button in at least two spots (one that was directly in the feed and another that comes up under Reports in the magazine panel). No matter what I do, it always shows up as "unban" in the mod log. However, there is a list of bans under the magazine panel, and that does show the accounts as banned.

So, I'm really not sure what is going on here. Maybe it's just a problem with the log and not with the banning itself?

Anyway, thanks again for pointing this out. Hopefully someone can figure out what is going on.

@bayaz Thank you! This is even worse than I thought! I will try some things out in the near future in order to find a stable way for banning accs.

Kotking, w KES 4.1.0: Improving the signal to noise ratio by blocking unsolicited ads
@Kotking@kbin.social avatar

Thanks for the hard work!
Even though I don't post much so mostly ignore all those messages, still it is a big problem. Until we get it sorted out having tools like these helps stop "bleeding" by people who want to use kbin.
Had few pop up on my magazine even though there is barely a traction but saw few times bloat when posted on other magazines which is really discouraging.

shazbot,

I don't read magazines in-depth much either, so I wasn't aware of the extent of the issue at first, but I was appalled at what I saw. I agree with you that it creates a negative impression for anyone wanting to venture into or use a magazine. I know that needing KES upfront may be a non-starter for some people, but for me the difference with filtering is night and day now.

What the... ugh. I've been doing this for months. Thanks for letting me know.

@bayaz It's you who gave me food for thought, alongside many other moderators! I only found out yesterday how to properly ban spam accs on kbin.social.

I really appreciate all efforts to grow and take care of communities, be it on kbin, on lemmy, or on mbin! Every day, I try to keep learning from other moderators.

Given the sheer lack of moderation tools, many mods do great work. I hope the situation will improve so that moderatoring will become easier.

bluGill, w Can we help against spammers?

Mostly we need Earnst (or some other kbin develop) to develop more tools to combat Spam. This is easy to ask for, but not easy to implement.

insomniac_lemon,

This is easy to ask for, but not easy to implement.

The problem I see (and what influenced the tone of my other comment) is that I don't think I've seen any acknowledgement about any sort of filtering and this is a persistent problem. I get it, but also it seems really unnecessary to manually remove the 10 threads obviously not made by humans (or even just the 3 accounts that just popped up in a close time-frame).

It doesn't need to be perfect, surely any technique can be worked-around eventually but that also introduces extra steps (that spammers don't need to take now) that makes it harder and less likely. Doing so I think makes moderation much more viable and impactful.

Even just some sort of auto-spoiler/warning (multiple suspicious keywords in a non-relevant community, new user, 3 threads in an hour etc) could have an effect.

PugJesus, w Lemmy.world has gone read only to us
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, something to do with voting from Kbin causing a loop and a huge amount of data to pass back and forth. Hope Ernest fixes it soon.

Kierunkowy74, w KES 4.0.0 now adds full mbin compatibility

KES-MES sounds kinda nice honestly.

cool, thanks

Me too.

Ernest Adds More Maintainers to Kbin is one of my favorite 80s comedies

its open source. it can and has been forked. he can do what he likes. The call for moderation made sense but code is different. Granted I think he should bring in help for himself but that is for him to decide.

Erm, I thought kbin was open source? Can’t anybody fork it if they have a problem with it? This sounds like a whiny nothingburger.

They can. That's what mbin is.

That's part of why I don't get why people always pressure Ernest to add maintainers.

I said that already, mbin might be good but I didn't like the advertisement.

I'm not quite sure what your position is. I am by no means an mbin booster. In fact I find some of the people pushing mbin over kbin (in lieu addition too) jerks about it.

This whole thread has been about the similarities I noticed between comments people made about/to Ernest previously and the sort of comments we later learned led to the xz backdoor.

When I started to read breakdowns about the social engineering behind the xz backdoor I was like, "Waaaaitaminute, I've seen that sort of talk before." I found it notable to point out the similarity and maybe poke around at it.

People decided to use the thread (to my excessive chagrin) to talk shit about kbin and rehash the exact same pressures I was attempting to analyze.

It's a shame, because I noticed similar patterns was looking forward to some good discussion about it here. Alas...

tiredofsametab, w Do the "Ernest needs to add more maintainers to KBin!" comments remind anyone else of the xz social engineering malarkey?

I switched away because kbin seemed stuck and unresponsive to users and uncommunicative. Changes that were made seemed to be ones the Ernest wanted to and not addressing issues that people were feeling in some cases.

I am a software developer for a living and I can tell you that you can both have more people contributing and be secure. Most projects do not have bad actors who successfully poison things. When someone does, they get caught in the review process. If this is your concern, then prove that Ernest himself isn't a bad actor? I don't believe he is, but being one person in control would certainly make that easy.

CharlesReed, w So I really am the cancer on this platform

Oof, that sucks, especially since a good chunk of my subs are to lemmy.world instances. I hope this gets sorted out soon.

fiat_lux, w So I really am the cancer on this platform

I have now been banned from cat@lemmy.world :( I haven't attempted to post or comment today anywhere except now. I've only liked posts today, so that narrows down the actions required to trigger the problem. I liked 4 posts over the last 24 hours in that community.

Hope that helps someone narrow down replication steps for the problem.

I am definitely not qualified for instance level moderation, but may be for a magazine. Is that part of what you are looking for? I did put a request in for one a ways back, but perhaps am not qualified for that, either. It would be a good step i think. But I don't know. I can go thru the abandoned list again.
