@ernest oooooh.

daredevil, w RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes

I did not expect to see the / feature be implemented so quickly after mentioning it in only two threads ago. It's really exciting watching develop. However, when I tried making a private and public test case, both returned with 50x error. Even though some actions are successful despite showing this error, I couldn't find my attempts at using this feature under Settings > Collections or Magazines > Collections. Regardless, your work is certainly appreciated.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

It should work now ;-)

daredevil, (edited )

Incredible. I can confirm it works now.

edit: I was going to make a public for , but you beat me to it. :)

EDIT: In all seriousness, this stuff all seems great! I think "collections" would be a better name than categories though.

Armaell,

Boring update containing the feature I wanted the most and the fix that was the most annoying.
Yeah, soo boring.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

You're right, 'collections' is definitely a better name for it! Changed ;-)

ADHDefy,
@ADHDefy@kbin.social avatar

lol I had the same thought. This was one of my most wanted features! Idk if Artemis is still being worked on at this point, but I hope support for collections is added there.

@gibandaley@kbin.social avatar

Awesome! Multireddit like functionality was what I was missing most, and Categories sounds like it will replace it nicely. Thanks!

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

I think it complements federation too. Suddenly you can have a collection of magazines sharing a name/topic from different instances all listed together in one place. That's really quite cool!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I agree. This is really harnessing the power of federation!

testing, w RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@ernest
you are so fast! how do you do that?

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

This is just a prototype, there will probably be some errors to fix ;-) But I want to see how it performs in practice and over time, I will refine the whole thing, and that will take a bit more time.

gibandaley,
@gibandaley@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I favorited my private collection (not sure why I did that...) and it seems to have permanently made it public, no big deal in this case, but I feel bad 'squatting' on collection slug.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Actually, I named it incorrectly. I treated as private collections those that don't appear in the listing, but you can still share them with friends. I changed it so that they are truly private, and I will add another status someday - non-public.

gibandaley,
@gibandaley@kbin.social avatar

Thanks! Looks like logged out the collection isn't accessible at kbin.social/c/collection-name anymore which is excellent, but is still accessible there when logged in (unexpected, though perhaps only accessible to my account, but I feel bad I might be squatting on a nice collection name) and is also accessible at kbin.social/u/gibandaley/c/collection-name (expected)

ContentConsumer9999, (edited ) w RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes

Another banger update! I can't tell you how convenient it is to have that media preview bug fixed. It was starting to get annoying to randomly have words missing. Are you planning to create an official Kbin category?
Edit: Seems like it's already been made. Here's a link for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

I love progress, but I love it even more at a sustainable pace.

@ThatOneKirbyMain2568@kbin.social avatar

Awesome stuff! I'm loving how these features are shaping up.

A few further suggestions on the aggregate view:

  • Like Threads and Microblog, All Content should have a number next to it (just the number of threads + the number of microblog posts).
  • I think the homepage setting should be split into "homepage feed" (all, subscriptions, moderated, or favorites) and "homepage view" (all content, threads, microblogs). That'd make the current dropdown a lot less cluttered.
  • It'd also be helpful to have a "default view" setting that applies when you go to any magazine or feed. For example, if I go to /m/Kurzgesagt and my default view is set to All Content, it'll start on the All Content view.

Should you keep the homepage setting as it is, there are a few issues with the dropdown:

  • When you select something, the only text that shows is the feed, not the view.
  • When you select something, the option that you currently have saved moves to the bottom of the dropdown.
  • Not sure if this has always been a thing, but the dropdown uses "Subscriptions" while the channel list in the header uses "Subscribed".

ETA: One more issue I forgot to mention — when you click All Content on the favorites, moderated, or subscribed feed, it sends you to the all feed.

Curious to see, than https://kbin.social/* consists entirely of threads, and https://karab.in/* almost entirely of microblog.

Kierunkowy74,
@Kierunkowy74@kbin.social avatar

asterisk breaks a link.

Working links:
kbin.social, karab.in

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

On kbin.social, posts featuring Lemmy posts receive more upvotes, and it defaults to sorting by "Hot content." For a more accurate representation, sorting by "Active" or "Newest" or */sub is recommended. On the other hand, karab.in primarily federates with Polish Mastodon instances, and szmer.info is not as popular, hence the difference.

ContentConsumer9999, w RTR#28 New Homepage Options, Improved Aggregate View, Support Us Box

Awesome work as always! The new all content page is much more convenient and I don’t think I've ever seen someone be this considerate while advertising (if you could even call it that). One thing I've noticed is that the support us part of the sidebar is somehow in French for me. I don't have any language settings set to French and this is the first time I've encountered such an .

ContentConsumer9999, w RTR#27 Aggregate view, work on federation

I really like this but currently it seems really difficult to activate it. Could you maybe turn this * button to a switch to indicate when it's on or off and to make sure it doesn't turn off when switching pages?

ContentConsumer9999,

To add to this, can you let us make our the aggregate view?

doc, w RTR#27 Aggregate view, work on federation

The aggregate view sounds exactly like what I was silently hoping for one day. Exciting! Is there a way to use this test version via the PWA on my phone?

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Just select * from the Channel menu at the top of the page (next to the username), and then navigate/filter as usual within the aggregate view.

If you do it from this thread, it will activate the aggregate magazine view; if you do it from the main page, you'll get the main channel.

ThatOneKirbyMain2568, w RTR#27 Aggregate view, work on federation
@ThatOneKirbyMain2568@kbin.social avatar

The aggregate view is really nice, especially on my sub page! This feature should hopefully be even better with the upcoming federation improvements assuming they'll tackle microblog federation, as that's quite iffy right now.

Since aggregate view essentially just combining threads and microblogs, it'd be best to have it as an option on the header alongside Threads, Microblog, and People. Maybe call it "All Content" or something like that to make sure it's clear what it is. Going with this, it'd also be nice to be able to toggle the default view (Threads, Microblog, All Content, or maybe People) in the settings.

ETA: Also noticed that the color of the new comment marker has been changed to be a lot less obtrusive (at least on darker themes). Very nice! Might be a good idea to have the color change with the theme.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Good point. If the feature is thoroughly tested, I will make it more visible.

daredevil, w RTR#27 Aggregate view, work on federation

Fascinating update. Microblogging seems to less important to /kbin users in my experience, but I find this aggregate view very useful. What is the fav change you're referring to? Bookmarks will be pretty handy--I've seen people asking for this a decent amount. I realize this is a test version, but it would be pretty cool if the aggregate view will allow one to combine magazines in the future. Not urgent of course, but it would really help alleviate how fragmented some communities feel at times. That being said, really impressed with the consistent communication and development on /kbin, Ernest. Looking forward to that next post of yours.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

I jot down all ideas for later, thanks ;)
