Today, I wanted to introduce you to Categories - a new feature that is essentially a multi-mags view. A new tab will appear in the user panel where you can create categories (public or private) and then add magazines to them (local or remote). In the magazine listing, there will be another tab that will list public categories...

lol I had the same thought. This was one of my most wanted features! Idk if Artemis is still being worked on at this point, but I hope support for collections is added there.

@ernest, you are doing amazing work! I hope you're taking care of yourself, too. :)

In a future update, do you think you could add the ability to set a default sort? I prefer to set my home feed to Top, 1 Day, and it's easy enough to just bookmark https://kbin.social/sub/top/1d on my PC, but I primarily use kbin as a PWA on Android and AFAIK, there's no way to set a custom home page. It would also just be convenient to open kbin to my preferred sort on any platform. :)

I felt this in my soul. lol This has basically been my state of mind for the least couple of years. I used to game on mobile a fair amount, but these days, I just can't handle mobile gaming anymore. I can't deal with F2P games on PC, either, despite having loved some of them in the past (Apex Legends, Warframe, etc.).

Between F2P games, paid games with egregious F2P-style monetization, and soooo many AAA games coming out broken or just bad, I have been playing a lot of retro games, older JRPGs, and indies the last couple of years. I'm just so burnt out on the modern game industry.

You are right, I'm a pretty big fan of Bloons TD 6 myself. I've also played a lot of Osu!Lazer and some of the Netflix indies. It just kind of feels like the overwhelming majority of mobile games are predatory and obnoxious, but there are definitely some really well-done games between the premium options, console ports, and a handful of open source games.

I suspect this is exactly why Battlebit Remastered blew up the way that it did this year even though it looks like a Roblox game. lol

I think people are starved for a good, clean FPS that isn't mostly battling menus, cluttered UI, MTX, endless DLC, P2W, battle passes, lootboxes, daily login bonuses, timed events, grindfests, invasive anti-cheat (or an overwhelm of cheaters), constant updates that break the game, etc. I think there's a lot of us that just want to shoot stuff and have fun with our friends, like the glory days of online FPS. I'd happily fork over $60 today for that kind of experience, but I don't trust hardly any AAA publishers to keep their promises if they even did offer something like that.

Over Halloween weekend, I beat the original Alan Wake for the first time. It was a blast. I got really engaged in the story and couldn't put it down. I was shocked at how well it held up. The graphics were a tad dated, but they were still pretty good and everything else about the game felt like it could have come out last year. I think I bought the game in like 2014, so finally playing it was a real victory for my backlog. lol

What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?

What I mean is… sometimes people are very loyal to a videogame franchise or a company because they loved a game they released years ago (Silent Hill/Konami with Silent Hill 2, Blizzard/Bethesda with their respective golden eras, some could argue this happens too with Pokémon and Final Fantasy, etc). Ethical/consumer reasons...

Just beat it a few weeks ago, it was a great time. The set pieces are jaw-dropping at times.

Multiplayer def has a learning curve, but it's fantastic.

Does anyone know of any kid-friendly "horror" games out there for children ~7 years old?

My son loves the adrenaline rush of getting scared, particularly with jump scares, however, I have a lot of difficulty finding a game or show which is appropriate for him. He is prone to nightmares, and more adult-oriented “kid horror” is too much (Poppy’s Playtime, Cartoon Cat?) And others like Siren Head. His peers...

Yep, hard pass. I got all the DLCs I care about for Payday 2 for super cheap in Steam sales, and I'm out. I'll just be playing that. lol

Multiplex, an app to watch torrents together. It provides an experience similar to Apple’s SharePlay and Amazon’s Prime Video Watch Party, except for any torrent instead of a specific streaming service. When they made OW2, they replaced OW1 with it. Technically, I think OW2 is just a really big update for OW1. But now there's no way to play the old version that a lot of us liked better. :(

Idk if it's "bad," exactly, but I don't like it. I liked the meta for the first game way more, I miss the old 6v6 team structure, I don't like the changes made to my favorite characters, and the monetization is really sucky. It felt to me like they took everything that was wrong with the first game, kept it as is, and then took a bunch of the good stuff and made it worse. lol

But that's just my opinion, I know there are def people that like it. I only wish they'd release "Overwatch Classic" or something so that people who prefer OW1 can still play it--ideally with the lootboxes removed and a way to unlock character skins and stuff by playing those characters and progressing, but I'd honestly take just like a snapshot of the last stable release before the OW2 update. It was one of my favorite games and I just really don't like the OW2 updates. 😥

Choose Four Consoles to Have the Largest Selection of Games

So I’m reassessing my entertainment center since seeing the Video Game History Foundation’s report. Since the study it’s got me thinking, if you could pick any 4 consoles to have hooked up to your TV (4 becuase I’ve got 4 inputs to my TV) which would you pick and why? I will accept modded consoles as answers too.

Here is what I believe to be the definitive answer for maxing out your library on 4 inputs:

  1. Gaming PC/Steam Deck - you'll have access to a sprawling library of games from all generations and can even emulate console exclusive games from previous generations. The reason I'm not recommending an Xbox console on this list is because basically every current gen Xbox One (+ X|S) game is already on PC (as are many OG Xbox and most Xbox 360-era games), GamePass is an option if you wanna play some OG Xbox/360 games legally, and emulation can get you any games that aren't available otherwise. Sony is also making many recent PS5 exclusives available on PC now with more to come.
  2. Nintendo Switch - it's got a kick-ass library of exclusives, almost every Wii U game has been ported over (minus like ~8, I think?), they've been remaking/remastering a lot of older games and are reportedly going to go hard on that for the remainder of the Switch's lifespan, and with NSO it has a respectable library of retro Nintendo and Sega Genesis games if you wanna go the legal route.
  3. PS4/PS5 - A PS5 would be ideal for maxing out your possible library size, because it can play any PS4 or PS5 game; however, there also aren't a ton of PS5 exclusives at this point in time, PS5 games are being ported over to PC faster than PS4 exclusives, many recent PS5 games are also on PS4, PS4s are cheaper, and the PS4 can be jailbroken. There's a case to be made for getting a PS4 instead.
  4. Modded PS3 - Especially if you can track down a phat model with hardware back compact support, you can load up a HDD with games and play the entire PS1, PS2, and PS3 libraries.

With these four, you should be able to play essentially any game ever made. You will have...

Official hardware support for:

  • PlayStation
  • PlayStation 2
  • PlayStation 3
  • PlayStation 4 and/or 5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • PC (Astonishingly huge library)

You will have the (paid) option of legal software support for many of the best games from:

  • NES
  • SNES
  • Sega Genesis
  • Game Boy
  • Game Boy Color
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Nintendo 64
  • Xbox
  • Xbox 360

You will have the capability to emulate anything from Atari 2600 through to some Nintendo Switch, including Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, arcade classics, and many, many more.

IMO, this is the best way to max out the 4 ports on your TV. You can also get a PS Vita and mod it for PS Vita + PSP games, and a 3DS modded for 3DS and NDS games. They don't need to be plugged into your TV, so they weren't included on my list of 4, but they are both excellent handheld consoles with great libraries.

I don't think so, only because most of the 360 games available for back compat on the Series X are already ported to PC, a lot of them can be accessed on PC by way of GamePass, and the rest can be emulated on PC. You cannot currently emulate PS4 or PS5 games and only a handful have been ported to PC so far, so original hardware is the only option for playing PlayStation exclusives. Whether to get a PS4 vs PS5 is debatable imo.

If you're planning to do everything the legal way (i.e. no emulation of games you don't own), don't want to buy discs to rip, and prefer the available Xbox & Xbox 360 games to the PlayStation exclusives, you could get a Series X--but honestly, if you are cool with buying discs and don't care about PlayStation exclusives, getting a 360 would be a significantly cheaper solution than a Series X, especially since there aren't really any console-exclusive Xbox games in the last couple of hardware gens and the 360 had better back compat for OG Xbox games than the current gen Xboxes do. So if you were gonna swap the PS for an Xbox, I'd personally go 360 over Series X.

I feel this. Spider-Man 2 is coming out in October for PS5 and it'll probably be at least a year or two until we get it on PC.

I have ADHD and Spider-Man is one of my hyperfixations/special interests, so it is going to be painful for a bit there. lol

Dunkey, Let's Game It Out, NakeyJakey, Digital Foundry, and Gameranx are the ones I watch most regularly.

The Architect of Games and Razbuten are fun ones if you like video essays, and Keenengraz is great for finding lots of insane free games to play. ThatGuyGlen has some cool, short docu-style videos on the making of indie games that are really well done.

I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty, but those are some of my favorites, for sure.
