Is ssd required even a thing? I mean sure it’s faster but… Only?

Russianranger,

I’m probably thinking yeah. I mean, you could probably get it to run on HDD, but I’m thinking that if Bethesda created this game similar to their others, there is a boat load of cells per planet/in space and it would be way more than what you would load into the RAM, so SSD will significantly reduce load times.

But that’s just me spitballin too

gila,
@gila@lemmy.world avatar

Kinda sorta required if you want to stream assets from storage, an approach taken by many modern games. Might not be absolutely necessary depending on your setup / game settings. BG3 also said SSD required but there’s a “Slow HDD Mode” in the settings anyway, which I believe just shifts more of the streaming burden to RAM/VRAM. If you played on a HDD without enabling it, I guess you’d expect to see inconsistent pop-in as individual assets try to stream in faster than your storage can read. But playing with it enabled might also cause performance drop if your RAM/VRAM was already close to full utilization with the setting disabled

whataboutshutup,

With the way they reused, dynamically loaded assets before and tried to keep world seamless, they’d probably load\unload parts of these 125 Gb a lot, with this 16 Gb RAM requirement no less. They test it with SSD and make it so it doesn’t have microstutter and loading problems on their target machine. Or, god forbid, loading screens when walking outside, like it was in TES3; or TES4 banning levitation and loading complex cities as different locations that won’t work in a space sim etc etc. BethSoft had many problems with it already. I doubt it’d refuse to work, but if they build their game around it, the result is unpredictable. Bet, it’d load low-res LOD textures and only then replace them with okay ones. That’d probably ruin the spaceship landing – one of the, possibly, most demanding and visually sweet parts of the game. It looking great is their baseline here.

CitizenKong,

It will likely still have loading times hidden behind unskippable animations. (See the door opening animation in the gameplay reveal.) You’re going to need an SSD to make that work.

conciselyverbose,

HDDs have been holding back what you can do in open worlds for a while. It (and the PS5 specifically having an extra emphasis on hardware decompression to amp it up further) was the thing I was most excited about for current gen consoles. There were a lot of rumors that PS4 Spider-Man had to cap web slinging speed to allow the HDD to keep up, and we'll see what the movement options are in Starfield and how ships work (unless we know already and I haven't seen it), but even the jet pack boost thing could seriously strain loads in denser areas if it allows enough movement to feel good in opener spaces.

dan1101,

It’s going to depend on a lot of things, like how much system and video RAM you have, what you have running in the background, etc. I think it could be viable running on HDD under good conditions, but I remember needing to install games like Planetside 2 to SSD to stop the stuttering as you move around the map.

BlinkAndItsGone, w Starfield Launch Details, PC Specs & More

The specs are exactly the same as the ones that have been up on the Steam page for weeks/months, in case someone was wondering if they’d changed.

dan1101,

I’m gonna run it on a 1050Ti, we’ll see what happens!

Bye, w Starfield Launch Details, PC Specs & More

They say 1070ti… will my 980ti run it??

Also I hope it runs on Linux

Cavemanfreak,

Someone said that those specs are for 1440p, so I still have hope that my 1060 6GB can handle it at 1080p.

AnUnusualRelic,
@AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the part that they always leave out 😡

narc0tic_bird,

A 1070 Ti is quite a bit faster than a 980 Ti. It also has 2 GB more VRAM. So hard to say how well a 980 Ti would run Starfield.

Arigion, w No Man's Sky Echoes Update Trailer

I bought NMS on release, even got a new PC for it and man was I disappointed by the missing content. Worse, after every time I tried to get back into it with some update my last efforts were broken. My base was broken or my home planet changed in a bad way or suddenly I had to manage a colony which I did not enjoy or my ship got lost due to a glitchy starbase. Every new patch I’m reminded of that and now I don’t bother to start it any more. I hope y’all have so much more fun with it than I had.

Glad they included such an expansive space combat update in this release. For a while it seemed like ship combat was an afterthought, but this update really does add depth to it.

LuckingFurker, w Dreadwolf's Delays Are Impacting The Next Mass Effect - Insider Gaming

In all honesty does anyone actually care anymore? Like, I really have no interest in a new Mass Effect or Dragon Age at all now, and I loved both series at one point. Andromeda was a mess, Dragon Age 4 was shaping up to be a live service shitshow until they abandoned it (allegedly), and this is the same Bioware that gave us Anthem. At this point I’d rather they just let both series die

MTLion3,

Let BioWare die at this point, honestly. Like, they’ve done nothing of true note in the last decade under EA. At this point, even if they were freed from their prison, so much of the talent that made BioWare worth a damn is gone anyway.

LuckingFurker,

That’s another good point, Bioware now is so far removed from Bioware then that any Dragon Age or Mass Effect may as well be them selling you fanfiction. And I would have no faith in a new Bioware IP after Anthem so at this point why keep it around?

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

One of the people they just laid off was the writer who created Varric fricking Tethras. I don’t have any faith in them anymore.

I want Dreadwolf to come out just to finish the story they’ve been setting up in the books, comics, and Inquisition, but I’ve accepted we might never get it. They might rush out a book like they did with the quarian arc in Andromeda when Dreadwolf falls through, maybe.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Oh. Oh, it’s worse than I thought with the layoffs.

LuckingFurker,

Why, who else is gone? I’d heard already about the writer for Varric, just how little faith should I actually have in it?

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

The guy mentioned there wrote Joker, Aveline, Sera, and a lot of the really good scenes in the Dragon Age series.

LuckingFurker,

Woof, what are they thinking? Yep, those series are definitely dead

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

They’re firing all the senior people because those are the ones with the highest salaries. Which tells you just how much trouble BioWare must be in.

LuckingFurker,

Yeah, if you’re firing the people who have the best chance of making you any money it seems that your days are numbered

MTLion3,

Writers are the cornerstone of any epic rpg. Character development is crucial. Getting rid of the people behind both of those pillars is shooting a nice hole in your foot

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Yeah, not good.

n3m37h,

Andromeda was half decent (gameplay) the story was kinda lack luster but there was a few good moments with the characters. I would love a fifth installment. They should say screw dragon age and put that into the grave where it belongs

LuckingFurker,

The gameplay was actually pretty good, but the writing, the setting, the characters, none of the rest of it was any good. I gave up after the first planet because I just didn’t care about anything at all, and I don’t have any faith that Bioware could even reach that level any more

For the three of us who bought a PSVR2, the foveated rendering they finally added with this update is fantastic. Still not as good as playing it on a TV, but so much better than the blurry mess it used to be.

ryathal, w Epic First Run: six-month exclusivity for 100% revenue share for developers

While it requires setting up your on site to take money, Steam has always allowed developers to create keys for free. They can sell or give those away for 100% of the revenue indefinitely.

merthyr1831,

Humble Bundle does pretty much that from what I can tell. Surprised more games don’t come to the humble store

MustrumR, w Dreadwolf's Delays Are Impacting The Next Mass Effect - Insider Gaming

They probably forgot to slap a season pass and lootboxes on it. Bet half of the team is hard at work putting in annoying mechanics that can be skipped by money and carving out content for DLCs.

CitizenKong, w Dreadwolf's Delays Are Impacting The Next Mass Effect - Insider Gaming

They just fired 50 devs while working on two games simultanously. I wouldn’t be surprised if BioWare doesn’t manage to finish either one before going bankrupt.

stopthatgirl7, (edited )
!deleted7120 avatar

At this point, I won’t believe Dreadwolf is actually coming out until it’s on store shelves, and I don’t think for a moment there’s actually going to be another ME game…Not one made by BioWare, at any rate.

IWantToFuckSpez,

Sony should sweep in and take the studio off EA’s hands and rebuild it. Sony is missing a studio capable of making fantasy RPGs in their roster. give them the Decima engine and see what they can do without having the burden of EA meddling.

cerevant, w Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to Xbox ‘this year’

Might be nice if they’d even comment on the Mac version which they supported from day one, but then went silent (beyond saying it was delayed) when it was time for release.

misk,

I was similarly disappointed but IIRC it was delayed to September 6th.

I wonder how will it run in Act 3 since DX11 is so much more performant than Vulkan and I assume they use either MoltenVK or straight Metal. It’s likely the reason for the delay.

cerevant,

9/6 is the PS5 date. Still no word from Larian on the Mac date - the last I heard was when they originally announced it would be delayed, and that they didn’t want to give a date and not meet it. What worries me is that they are willing to give these other dates - PS5 & Xbox - but not even a window for Mac.

They were touted as having their engine running on Metal, and it was one of the first major apps to port to Apple Silicon. The early access worked fine. Unless there was something in the later acts that really broke performance, I can’t see why they didn’t go ahead and release with the engine they had.

I just checked Wikipedia which I think I got it from and it states 9/6 but the link cited as source doesn’t state it anywhere.

grumble

TWeaK,

They probably have no contractual date with Apple, so they’re prioritising the ones where they do. Also, PS5 and Xbox are both probably bigger markets than Mac.
