willya, w Roblox ‘operates illegal gambling ring that preys on children’: lawsuit
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

Talk about a click bait title.

starman2112,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

The lawsuit alleged that Roblox was in violation of its own terms of service, which states that “experiences that include simulated gambling, including playing with virtual chips, simulated betting, or exchanging real money, Robux, or in-experience items of value are not allowed.”

According to the lawsuit, Roblox users, most of whom are minors, “first purchase Robux through the Roblox website, using either their own money, a parent’s credit card, or gift cards they possess.”

The minor then “navigates to one of the” three aforementioned sites’ “virtual casinos” that “exist outside the Roblox ecosystem,” according to court papers.

“Then, the user links their Robux wallet on Roblox’s website to the gambling website,” the court documents alleged.

“And finally, once the minor-user’s wallet is linked, the gambling website converts the minor user’s Robux into credit that can only be wagered in their virtual casinos,” according to the lawsuit.

“The gambling credits function just like chips in a brick and mortar casino,” the defendants alleged in court papers.

“Users ‘buy in’ using their Robux, obtain chips, gamble until they lose their money or wish to cash out, and, if they increase their credits, they cash those credits out in exchange for Robux,” the lawsuit alleged.

“This entire exchange of Robux occurs on the Roblox platform with Roblox’s knowledge and active support, and Robux never leave the Roblox ecosystem unless and until they are cashed out for fiat currency,” according to court documents.

Please point out the click bait, I’m not seeing it

conciselyverbose,

The fact that none of the gambling is happening on their site? The fact that saying it's not allowed isn't magic that allows them to instantly identify bad actors?

It looks interesting, but I don’t like that they’re saying it’s going to be a new game. I don’t want to spend another $40 on what amounts to a new game mode. Fundamentally different new game mode, but new game mode.

Vash63, w FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR3) - AMD Stage Presentation | gamescom 2023

Only DX11 and 12? Shame they don’t support open APIs like Vulkan if true.

Ranvier,

They’ve also stated fsr3 will continue to be open source, and previous versions have been compatible with Vulkan on the developer end at least. I can’t find though if this new hyper rx application running it agnostic to any developer integration is supporting Vulkan though. Guess we’ll find out when it’s released shortly here.

azvasKvklenko,

It can probably be integrated into anything like FSR 1 and 2. Valve can just update their Gamescope compositor to use it instead of FSR 1. I wonder though, how the image quality is going to be like when upscaling/generating frames based on such small input image resolutions. Previous versions of FSR really only mase sense for around-1080p upwards.

somegadgetguy, w Google Play Games - Play Android games on PC

Almost as bad as the connection of titles, the performance is so pretty garbage too. Especially compared to running apps in Windows 11. I made a short when it launched and still get people whining “but he’s complaining about a BETA?!?!”, like Google’s terrible performance is excusable, and we haven’t had better emulation for years now.

PeterPoopshit, w Factorio: Space Age

Oh man, there’s already a space exploration mod for factorio. If the plan is to do that but better, they really have their work cut out for them. I really hope they plan to and succeed in making it “space exploration but better” otherwise the modding situation is going to get really awkward…

funnystuff97,

Seeing as the post is written by the person who made Space Exploration, it seems they’re targeting entirely different niches here. Where Space Exploration is about challenge and increasing numbers of interdependencies, Space Age seems to be just the natural progression of vanilla Factorio, as in, just keep expanding. Having never played Space Exploration nor made it past Purple Science, I’m interested to see how this expansion will develop.

Brokkr,

They address that at then end of the post. After all, the same developer is working on both projects.

Basic point is thwt they are targeting different audiences, but there will also be engine improvements. I’m hope that means SE just gets better because of these changes.

Igloojoe,

The announcement goes to mention that he was one of the creators for space exploration. But this expansion here is supposed to be for more for the casual player.

sockenklaus,
@sockenklaus@sh.itjust.works avatar

But this expansion here is supposed to be for more for the casual player.

Yes but to be honest the term “casual player” doesn’t exactly apply to Factorio.

Oneeightnine, w Change my view: loot boxes aren't as bad as people claim they are.
!deleted4231 avatar

What if Chuck E Cheese was in your bedroom and it was marketed to make you feel like you were missing out if you didn’t have the thing your friend’s had, but you can’t buy the thing, oh no that’s too easy. We’ll let you buy the chance to own the thing.

Shere_Khan,

I’ll give you the proximity point, it is easier to access loot boxes when they are in a game.

But as for the missing out part, yeah that’s how it works. Your friend wins something from the claw machine or gets a bunch of tickets, now you want that. That’s part of the fun, your parents could just buy the toy but that’s lame

DarraignTheSane,
@DarraignTheSane@lemmy.one avatar

But your parents can’t just buy the toy. The only way to get the toy is through the element of chance - sometimes with a near zero win chance - by spending real world money.

The only reason it’s not de-facto gambling is that there are consolation prizes, but in most peoples’ view that doesn’t make it morally okay to push on children, nor does it make it completely not gambling either. It’s just gambling with consolation prizes.

Shere_Khan,

I disagree that most people view it as bad. Arcades and stuff have been around forever, and are still being used by a ton of people. Just because you don’t want send your kids to chuck E cheese doesn’t mean most people agree with you

DarraignTheSane,
@DarraignTheSane@lemmy.one avatar

You keep relying on the Chuck E. Cheese anology, but it simply doesn’t work. At Chuck E. Cheese the prizes are a bunch of toys that your parents could otherwise buy, and the fun is in playing the games themselves which pay out tickets toward earning those prizes. That is in no way the equivalent of gamble boxes in video games.

Gamble boxes contain prizes that can’t be bought outside the game, and in nearly every case contain prizes that can’t be bought with the “consolation prize” (i.e. “tickets”) that are dropped when you otherwise win nothing or very little compared to the actual prizes. And there is no inherent “fun” in clicking an “UNLOCK BOX” button compared to actually… playing a game in order to earn prizes. Not comparable at all, really.

If you’re going to try to convince people they’re not gambling (and you have quite the uphill battle to fight), you’re better off likening them to blind bag grab-packs of card games / collector cards / toys, etc. - Pokemon, Magic the Gathering, sports cards, blind-bag toys etc. That is their closest real-world equivalent. Many would argue that those are also a form of gambling, as well.

This would be interesting if it utilized my existing Android library.

However, they appear to have learned nothing from Stadia: people are not going to “purchase” games they already own elsewhere on a platform that will disappear in two years.

Everblue, w Dragon Age Dreadwolf keeps getting delayed internally, report claims

Delay as long as you need, just please release a good game. I loved the first game, and while I felt DA2 was a step back, I still enjoyed it. DA3 felt too… MMO-y to me.

It’s such an amazing world to play in, I really hope the 4th installment isn’t garbage.

mothersprotege,

Totally agree about the DA series. Can’t say I have very high hopes for this one, given the direction they’ve taken the franchise, but I’d love to be wrong.

As someone who bought a physical disc copy of The Orange Box on launch day, it…kinda slays me that TF2 is still running. It’s a very different game than it was in my day, and it is just wild hearing kids younger than the game talking about it. Gaming almost always moves on faster than this.

vulgarcynic,
@vulgarcynic@sh.itjust.works avatar

That launch day was amazing. We had a 2 day LAN party that weekend and played TF2 almost exclusively. This was with a group that had formed around TFC. Then about 6 years after launch I introduced my son to it and he became hooked and we played for years together. There’s a certain magic to all versions of TF that just doesn’t exist in other games.

(it’s probably the well balanced gameplay and dedicated servers)

MoonlitSanguine,

I was also wondering that. Anything worth playing is just a port of a PC game. Like Slay the Spire or Dead cells.

There was one game I often recommend, but just found it here: www.silvergames.com/en/yellow
