ShittyRedditWasBetter, w Microsoft completely misjudged Baldur’s Gate 3

BG3 is an outlier. I completely understand why it wasn’t on the radar. Pent up DnD demand + decent execution sent it to the moon.

Blizzard,

Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 as well as Divinity: Original Sin 2 were all huge successes and Baldur’s Gate 3 was in early access for 3 years to either test it or read testers opinions. So you’ve got a very successful IP using a renown system, a devoted studio known for quality games with proper resources and their own, capable and proven game engine, years of polishing the game and adhering to fans feedback. If you “completely understand why it wasn’t on the radar” then… I guess you could get a job at Microsoft.

Kujo, (edited )

Pretty revisionist of you. No one saw the success that Baldurs Gate 3 had. They literally moved up their release date to avoid it getting drowned out.

The head of Larian has even said that they did not anticipate this many sales.

Was this going to be a good game? Yes most people could see that.

Would it reach a mainstream pocket and sell as well as it did? Most people did not predict that.

dreadgoat,
@dreadgoat@kbin.social avatar

You're missing the scale.

Everyone knew BG3 would "a success," but it hasn't just been a success, it's been a nuclear bomb of a success.

Optimistically, people were expecting to get around 1 million in sales. Total. THAT would have been a GREAT SUCCESS. Today I think it has around 10 million on Steam alone, 10x the "hope we get there" number.

Imagine taking a job and hoping for a $10,000 bonus for good performance, and then your boss drops $100,000 on your desk. It's that level of joyful shock.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

Estimates for Steam is roughly 4.9 million sales. That data comes from peak players, average weekly players, and achievement tracking information.

Estimates taken this way usually skew higher than they really are, but the data for the current active and peak player estimates look good. As they have dropped to a quarter of weekly players.

wahming,

I guess the head of Larian Studios needs to resign and get a job at Microsoft, because he said essentially that.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

DOS2 has sold 5M copies over the life of it. BG3 has sold nearly 10M in the first month on steam alone. Probably close to 30M over the life of the game.

It’s several orders of magnitude more successful and easily the most successful CRPG ever. You all really are missing the scale.

Gamey,

They could have predicted more success than they probably did but I don’t get why your comment has so many downvotes, Larian itself prepared for 100k players at launch too, not over 800k so no one really predicted how much of a bomb this game would be!

It’s a remake and it’s not out yet.

Ah I meant I’ve never played P3 (any version). So they’ve completely remade it from the ground up?

aaronstc,

Right, it’s a complete remake coming in February.

Quentinp, w Bethesda: Thank you to more than 10 million Starfield explorers for creating the biggest launch in Bethesda history
@Quentinp@lemmy.ca avatar

Up to 87 hours warts and all. Have played through some great quests. Also found plenty of bugs and annoyances, but overall it’s great. The random procedural quests are a nice addition, a call back to Daggerfall. The space combat is an ok addition. Bases are the big waste of time here, but you don’t really need to do one. There are lots of nice shoutouts to your character after doing certains quests, including NG+. (Few things that don’t make sense, and they could’ve pushed it farther -

spoilerlike does it makes sense to join the Crimson Fleet in the Razorleaf, better to have cut out that questline for that play thru IMO

) Overall quite satisifed and i’m enjoying it a lot. I can see getting to 100 hours easily without mods.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

None of the security guards had armor, just walking around shirtless.

ultratiem, w Diablo 4 Twitch viewership continues to drop as Diablo 3 overtakes it
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

I loved the server test. Totally hooked. Bought it on launch and after a week I was done.

After a few days it all seemed like a reskin with “retention” gimmicks and FOMO.

TBH after like a decade, and playing it for some 100h, it’s a weak offering for a studio of that magnitude. I often feel they spent more on marketing that making the thing.

CileTheSane,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

After hearing what happened with Diablo Immortal I decided to wait a month before even considering it. Glad I did.

silentknyght,

Honestly, getting that way about A LOT of games this year. I played Starfield on game pass, got my fix in about 8 hours, and haven’t played since.

CileTheSane,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh absolutely. Never pre-order games. At least wait a day to check user reviews and make sure it’s not immediately broken.

Aceticon, (edited )

With maybe the notable exception of multiplayer games, all games will be at least just as good a year after launch as they are at launch day.

Add to it that in a year’s time there will be enough reviews out there from people who actually played it longer than 5h and the heavy marketing phase will be more than over so it’s actually possible to get a hype-free overview of it, AND the game itself will likely be better than at launch due to bug fixing in the meanwhile and maybe even some content added, and it’s the logical thing to never buy before or at launch and just wait.

However most people have problems with “reward delaying” (and actual psychological term for the ability to wait for something to be more ‘rewarding’ before going for it) and “just have to have it now!” and that just overrides logic (assuming they even took the time to think about it in the first place).

Zeroc00l,

Smart. I fell for the hype on reddit & had serious buyers remorse.

Blackdoomax,

Almost the same, but at least i played it 150h before the first season.

Pxtl,
@Pxtl@lemmy.ca avatar

Honestly, I’ve only ever spent over 100+ hours on a game I felt “meh” about once before that I can think of (it was Disgaea).

In any game with RPG elements like unlocks and numbers-going-up (and these days that’s all of them), it’s always worth asking yourself “am I really enjoying this, or am I just anticipating the next carrot it’s dangling in front of me”?

Like, I used to play Civ games way too much, and now I don’t because I realized that the actual fun parts of the game were kind of fleeting and most of it was about The Next Thing.

Blackdoomax, (edited )

Oh i really enjoyed it. I’ll surely play more when they’ll fix all the things i dislike and improve some others. So in about 3 to 5 years xD

JokeDeity,

The beta was one of the most boring things I’ve ever played, what hooked you in from it?

ultratiem,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

Dark, brooding, ARPG from arguably the fathers of the genre.

JokeDeity,

What other games in the genre are you into? It just felt so lackluster to me, like even far behind PoE which is much older at this point.

ultratiem,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s slim picking in the field, so mostly PoE these days. Probably my longest running game. But TBH, they are kinda on fumes too. New leagues have all been pretty meh. PoE looks great but it’s like 2 years out still (beta late next year).

There were a couple that showed promise but not sure if they ever materialized.

Pxtl,
@Pxtl@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m always flabbergasted that 100h of gameplay is considered a failure of a product.

ultratiem,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

When you weigh it against all the bullshit hoops games make you jump through these days, I’d say comparing 100h in Super Mario is a faaaaar cry from 100 h in a modern ARPG.
