The one thing about patent law I know is that you can’t patent something that already exists in the wild (“prior art”), so surely that can’t be the case, and if it is then it’s open-and-shut, right?
There’s loads of Worms games now though they’re all the same sort of thing. I think they just announced an “anniversary edition” of Armageddon, which looks basically the same as the Steam version but ported to modern consoles. Still a banger 25 years on!
I am pretty sure I picked up the Android version for free a few years ago and it had The Offspring but I installed it just now and it’s gone. It’s also now talking about ads and data collection so I assume the original build has been unavailable for a while.
This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its...
“Certain aspects of Concord were exceptional,” Hulst continued, “but others did not land with enough players, and as a result we took the game offline. We have spent considerable time these past few months exploring all our options [and] after much thought, we have determined the best path forward is to permanently sunset the game and close the studio.”
But why? Did they actually think it was going to cost more money to keep the servers running than it would bring in? What’s the opposite of the sunk cost fallacy?
I was keeping in mind that they put that much money in, surely all that money has made something playable that would make some money, whereas throwing it all away makes nothing at all, right?
Wait, so does a single company own all the cabling or something!? We have a despised-for-their-incompetence company called Openreach in Britain but the cables they manage cover almost the entire county and any ISP can use them.
I’m guessing the ISPs aren’t forced to share their cables with other ISPs then?
Over here we have “fibre to the kerb” for people whose houses aren’t fully supported yet, meaning it’s fast fibre-optic cable all the way to somewhere near your house, then it uses your existing copper wires for the last bit. It’s not at fast as proper fibre-optic but still a lot better than old copper wires.
I’d say they’re not even the worst of the big three console manufacturers. The stuff Microsoft and Sony do to the gaming industry is just as bad, but that’s ignoring that they both have their fingers in a lot of other technological pies where they do some really bad shit.
I think their point is that you said “but I am overall against these practices, since they are just illegal”, as in you’re against something because it’s illegal not because it’s immoral
Hopefully not a public one. It would be perfect if it was a direct message (or even better, built in to your client) but all those request comments and responses from the bot were basically spam to everyone else!

The rest of the article is mildly interesting, but if you just took the bait from the headline:
On a technical level, Xbox One is essentially a PC using a heavily modified version of Windows, and this software simply translates native Xbox applications into a form that can run on standard Windows PCs
Wow, this is awful. Some people reported that these ads are also very petty and not necessarily related to the game, like apparently Elden Ring shows an ad for a licensed mousepad when you hover over the game now…...
Console makers see them as one and the same. This being Lemmy I have to advise that the only solution is to own your own machine, so best build your own hardware, install Linux, and compile all the games you want to play yourself.
My Linux gaming machine is a Steam Deck, it’s been a pretty positive experience and you only really need to tinker if you’re straying off the golden path.
I imagine we’ll see some new Nintendo innovation with the Switch 2, they are at least good for throwing in a load of wacky ideas with new consoles.
While it defaults to a console-like experience it is meant to be altered, they give you a full desktop environment as standard and even provide instructions to install Windows if you really want.
Complete guess here, but refunds are probably handled differently by the banks compared to new payments, i.e. undoing an error is probably free(ish), but paying people is how they get you
Not to mention every now and then the shop gets ever so slightly worse and more spammy looking. Steam was a god send when it first launched and I’d hate to see it become what it replaced
Was it a godsend? I thought everybody hated it initially. And I feel like it’s only got better over the years as they’ve added more features.
Hey beehaw, I’ve got the hottest off-the-press rumour for you today: I predict video game companies will continue to produce video games for the foreseeable future! Unbelievable, I know, but my insider knowledge tells me that companies often seek profit by providing goods and services.
As someone who grew up playing games like World of Warcraft and other AAA titles, I’ve seen how the gaming industry has evolved over the years—and not always for the better. With the release of “The Final Shape,” the main storyline has concluded, and it seems like the developers are now just churning out random content and seasonal passes without a clear direction for the game’s future.
