Looks to me like this was cranked to low. About as honest as using a Mortal Kombat 1 screenshot from the Switch, but I guess it’s their fault for allowing people to lower their graphics like this.

I’ve been playing on minimum graphics, and it looks much better than any previous Bethesda game. The performance isn’t too great, and the TAA is a bit blurry, but it’s tolerable.

I play on medium settings. Some scenes look borderline photorealistic. Other scene and lighting combinations looks worse than 2005 Battlefront 2.

The game is usually quite attractive, but skin in particular is pretty bad in a lot of lighting. Subsurface scattering would go a long way to making them not look like clay, but there are other methods to fix this as well.

I mean, it’s an obvious scam. Always has been. They only have a few tech demos, and bunch of polished marketing material. There’s nothing to actually release.

I do not believe it to be an outright scam. However, it is horribly managed and I do consider the funding model to be predatory.

The whole "pledge" store should not be a thing at this stage IMO. It's just a cash shop they can justify huge prices with. It's actively contributed to the scope creep by introducing new vehicle roles, which they sometimes admit to not having designed gameplay for yet. Nor does it currently tell you if you can actually rent or buy the ship in-game (subject to progress wipes). Heck, the closest thing to a scam they've had recently was a "new starter bundle" of in-game gear that you lose upon your first death / unrecoverable body. This is a game where 80% of your deaths are to bugs or unintuitive behaviour.

They also keep trying to change their standards to match modern games. Ships have gone through multiple reworks which take months for a single ship. A sensible dev would lock that in and commit to releasing under those standards. It's been pointed out that with the current rate of progress, they'll still be releasing currently announced ships into the 2030s.

That's not even mentioning the single player component, Squadron 42, which got indefinitely delayed a few years back before a major demo showcase which never materialised. Supposedly, it's been scrapped and re-done more than once.

Their last big chance to show they've pulled things together is going to be the upcoming CitizenCon (yes, it has one) where they'll supposedly be making a big Squadron 42 announcement. A former customer service employee, who recently criticised the company's spending practices, claimed they'd taken a much more serious approach to the scope creep and that we'd see some results of that towards the end of this year.

I'm not holding my breath though. They've been known to create bullshit for presentations before (e.g the infamous sand worm) and I absolutely would not be surprised if Chris Roberts feels pressured to one-up Starfield.

As a side note, does anyone else get the impression this article was written by an AI? It repeatedly lists of buzzword features, like the Hangar module which hasn't been relevant for years, and barely discusses what the game is actually like.

The fanbois have obviously found this story and voting down the people saying how obvious the grift was/is.

I wonder how many other space sim genre games that conspicuously did not hand out the begging bowl, or squander all their money and were actually delivered have happened in the time that Star Citizen hasn’t. Being generous the best that can be said is the project is just badly mismanaged. At worst, and more realistically, much of that money just got siphoned away to fund lifestyles. Maybe the devs know they can run this grift for as long as their people stupid enough to keep funding them, knowing they’ll never have to actually deliver on their promises.

To be fair, he is partially right. It’s insane that games have basically been the same price since forever, the only reason they stayed the same is cuz more people could afford computers/consoles and in contrast to every other industry, making a new either physical or digital copy of a game is dirt cheap, so the more users the more profit.

Idk if it actually makes sense for games to be more expensive yet tho.

Prices are comparable because a cartridge in the 90s was as expensive, comparatively, as an SSD is today. Have you ever bought a game and received a free SSD with it?

You also have to ignore economies of scale. Nintendo was a huge consumer of chips globally just for gaming. That market is now mature, and gaming isn’t as big of a piece as it used to be. There’s also way more games being sold now, call of duty gets more day one sales than most n64 games ever sold, which made disc’s super cheap. Now you have digital distribution which is practically free, and companies are getting more of a games price than ever before and it’s still not enough.

It’s a shame that this game got written of by so many people due to its shaky launch. The game’s story and side quests are good and most of the game breaking stuff has been fixed. The visuals and art direction are great so it’s nice to see it getting support for new technologies even if no one can run them.

Yeah I think it’s mostly a meme now. Either you read comments from people who loved it, or jokes from people who haven’t played it. I had no expectations before playing it and liked it so much that I even preordered the DLC, to show my support. (I don’t care about the preorder bonus, and I don’t think preordering games is reasonable, but I’m gonna play it right away anyway, so it doesn’t matter in this case)

I never noticed many bugs and had 93 hours in the game under two starts, never finished it though, to be fair I don’t finish most games so not much of a difference there. Was playing today and was reminded how gorgeous it is. I love cyberpunk as a genre and have a half decent video card (3070) and the neon, reflections, smoke all look like some of the best of not the best I’ve seen in my 39ish years of gaming. The downside is at 1080p (yeah I know) is the hair looks distorted/crimped close up (mostly bangs and end of the hair) but still looks better overall than any hair I recall and the rest is all eye candy.

Oh guess I should add, it really does feel like a cyberpunk world should, least to me. The setting is perfect for me but I’m sure there’s flaws I haven’t noticed.

I think that before you could only set it in the character creation screen at the start. Now you can change it anytime.

The implementation is through The Magic Mirror, which is the same thing Divinity: Original Sin 2, their previous game used. So probably less inspired by Starfield.

Wait… that math does not possibly check out. In the worst case scenario (Steam), they pay 30% of the revenue from the game in platform fees. If they spend less than that for settlement, simple math tells us that there is at least 41% of the revenue basically unaccounted for.

There’s a bit of overhead in every company, like HR, IT and facilities, so maybe these don’t count for “development cost” (which makes no sense tbh, that’s not how project budgets work). Marketing can eat a ton of money, too, but the numbers still seem bafflingly high.

What? It just means that they spend less than 30% on development. That doesn’t sound too far off, as a lot of the money probably goes to marketing, management, administration or (gasp) profits.

Unless I live under a rock I don’t see the point of spending a lot on marketing ads for games. Two big examples of games that sold extremely well that I never saw an ad for were elden ring and boulders gate three. If you just make a good game word of mouth will tell how good the game is not an ad on TV.

It seems like it can make sense. Platform fees aren’t an initial outlay, they’re effectively a cut of profits based on sales.

For the sake of argument using fake numbers, if a studio spends $1m making a game, and then they put it on Steam and it does $10m in sales, then Steam’s cut of that at 30% will be $3m

So, spending more on store fees than development seems possible - especially if your game is selling really well

The percent isn't fixed at 30%, though. Big sellers lower the cut, and Steam takes literally zero from keys they sell elsewhere.

Did they ever add player reflections?
It’s so annoying waking around all these shiny surfaces, every light bouncing just right, yet be a complete ghost.

Yeah, anything with Ray tracing will have player reflections. You usually don’t see them because they’re faking ray tracing by baking the light bounces when the scene first loads

Cyberpunk doesn’t/didn’t by default though.
Last I checked you could kind of enable them in a config file, but the model used doesn’t have a head so your reflections are that of a headless V.

Unless they fixed it, you were either a ghost/vampire or a headless chicken.
Pretty jank when you carry a corpse and the dead guy you carry has this perfect reflection in glass panes and puddles or whatnot but you’re just inexistant.

You can have missing objects with real ray tracing. Like the player object itself generally doesn’t need to be rendered so it might not even be added to the scene. Unless the player is looking down. If their arms are holding a gun or reloading, it might just be disembodied arms if you could move the camera to see it from another angle.

Or, different game, but in GT7, the ray tracing doesn’t include vehicles’ self reflections. Which is probably an optimization because every reflection ray trivially intersects with the object it is reflecting from, so it makes sense to skip the reflecting object, but then you miss cases where it should be reflecting another part of itself.

Yea I know but it’s still a bit lame.
You can enable an option to add the first person player model to Ray tracing, but it doesn’t have a head (on purpose so it didn’t clip in the first person camera), so you have decapitated reflections.
Same reason the player shadows are janky, first person models are often like that. You gotta adjust it so it looks good in first person but then it’s all weird in third person.
There’s technically a third person model, but it’s probably not animated, so… yea maybe some day.
