Swarfega, w Steam's Oldest User Accounts Turn 20, Valve Celebrates With Special Digital Badges - IGN

I’m like 3120 or something to sign up. That day was a complete mess as everyone signing up and trying to download their games DDoSed the platform. At that time Steam was just a client to download and play Valve games.

I was younger then and had my own domain thinking I was cool but it is actually shit and uses leet speak. I’m stuck with that forever now as my account name. Sigh.

    September 13, 2003 for me it seems.

    Just a few weeks ago it feels like. Probably spent more time playing video games between 2003 and 2006 than I have between 2006 and today. Makes me sad.

    ratboy, w TIL about the Sega Channel
    @ratboy@lemmy.ml avatar

    Dude I had sega channel, it was so cool! I believe you could play games all the way through and they grouped them by different genres, and the games changed monthly. They also had contests where you could win prizes. I won a backpack for one! Wish I still had it

    Sanctus, w Japan Youth Gamers Report 2023: Most Youth Gamers Play on Console (72%) Followed by Mobile (64%) and PC (15%)
    @Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

    I would have thought the PC numbers would be higher.

    MysticKetchup,

    Japan has always been notoriously avoidant of PC games. Most Japanese devs only worked on consoles and mobile games kicked off way earlier over there so the casual PC market never caught on. That much momentum is probably hard to change

    Sanctus,
    @Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah, without those early days of casual PC gaming I can see how that affected the market over there. I mean, if it wasn’t for Kongregate, Newgrounds, and Miniclip idk how many Americans would be on PC gaming.

    baked_tea,

    If the size of the apartments they live in is as small as media portrays them to be, they cannot fit a pc reasonably well inside (of course not everyone has mini living space)

    MrEUser, w What are your Favorite and Least favorite genre names?
    !deleted3991 avatar

    I like the term boomer shooter. The reason is the alliteration. But more importantly…

    • Rookie Level 1 Gamer: “They’re called boomer shooters because they’re old like baby boomers”
    • Veteran Level 20 Gamer: “Baby boomers thought Doom was satanic, that’s a stupid term”
    • Enlightened Level 60 Gamer: “They’re called boomer shooters because of the huge debt they owe to the original Doom modding scene and therefore “Boom”, one of the first limit-removing source ports”
    • GigaChad Level 80 gamer: “Who cares. My ego isn’t so delicate as to have my sensibilities offended by whatever the fuck you want to call it. If you think something like ‘MyHouse.wad’ is something that is for “bOoMeRs” (a.k.a. anyone old enough to know that it’s called a “VCR,” not a “VHS player”) then you’re the one missing out… not me.”

    can,

    I think you mean the rhyming?

    MrEUser,
    !deleted3991 avatar

    The short definition of alliteration is “the repetition of sounds, not just letters.” In this case the oo…er, oo…er. So I said what I meant.

    MoreIronOre, w What are your Favorite and Least favorite genre names?

    Kamikazimatt,

    Pretty much any shooter that plays like Quake or Doom

    MoreIronOre,

    Oh.

    Then I love boomer shooters lmao.

    underisk, (edited ) w [Spoilers] Baldur's Gate 3 has a secret, brutal game over scene for players who somehow overcome every safeguard to permanently lose a critical item
    @underisk@lemmy.ml avatar

    That ending scene is used in at least one other circumstance:

    spoilerif you kill the emperor at the start of Act 3 inside the astral prism

    It’s probably just a generic scene for miscellaneous unwinnable game states.

    Wogi,

    Your spoiler tag isn’t spoiler tagged.

    Also I saw that cutscenes once before making it as far as you describe, I don’t even remember how, pretty sure it was midway through act 2. But it’s definitely a semi generic cutscene for when you lose in a particular type of way.

    MimicJar,
    @MimicJar@lemmy.world avatar

    I got it during the Act 2-3 transition. I had a fight that had to end in 3 or so turns and I didn’t make it.

    Wogi,

    That’s where it got me. I remember now

    Hoomod,

    I remember thinking Steam would die in less than 6 months because nobody wanted dematerialised games…

    Glifted,

    Part of the problem was how poorly steam ran when it was first introduced

    Album,
    @Album@lemmy.ca avatar

    yeah at the time you were forced into it. the won servers were shut down and most peoples computers werent good enough to play CS and have this clunky software running in the background at the same time. it worked but alt-tabbing back then was a gong show and you definitely had the performance hit.

    i played CS daily then so the first day was a shit show and I dont think I got much time in that day. mostly just trying to get connected…the servers were overloaded.

    JasSmith,

    That brings back memories. I used to play ARC on WON. TEN prior to that. Anyone remember Kali? I think it’s still running.

    JasSmith,

    I still remember that meme with the Valve gear fucking a guy in the ass. Steam was not well received.

    Potatos_are_not_friends,

    I cursed Valve for forcing me to install Steam to play HL2.

    Selmafudd,

    I didn’t want it, still don’t. I actively avoided any game that required it but seems I gave up on 23 July 2011

    Draconic_NEO,

    I pirated almost any game that required it, only ended up signing up in 2018 I don’t remember why at the time but I don’t think it was to buy games since I didn’t buy any until almost a year after creating the account.

    SamHandwich,

    Wow, same here. I gave up June 30, 2011.

    Default,

    Skyrim?

    SamHandwich,

    Oblivion, actually. Skyrim didn’t come out until that November.

    shasta,

    I thought it was great. I got a physical copy of the Orange Box for $20 and didn’t care that I had to install Steam to play it. After I had it set up and realized I didn’t have to physically go to the store to get games anymore, I like it even more.

    11/22/2004 reporting in. Just currently 18 almost 19. I do not have a short steam ID though. Can’t remember which game was the first but pretty sure it was either half-life or HL2

    hogart, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?
    @hogart@feddit.nu avatar

    Little Big Adventure 2. Just before the last boss I managed to save myself on the last island without a way to leave it. But I needed to leave and get another Ball or w/e it was to unluck a door. It was my first real pc game experience ever. Dunno why I stuck with this hobby after that tbh :)

    The idea that you can control capitalists with ‘your wallet’ is flawed. Its never worked that way. Capitalism is controlled by regulations, or its not and you get crony capitalism.

    Coelacanth, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

    Disco Elysium has a number of potential soft locks, though you kind of have to go out of your way to actually get into one. The easiest one is probably paying for your hostel room the second night. Usually a combination of decisions and unlucky dice rolls are necessary to actually get locked, and/or poor use of skill points (meaning you can’t spend one to re-try the crucial roll).

    There is also a seemingly minor decision in a side quest that can make a certain check during the ending unwinnable and thus lock you out of one of the most impactful moments in the game.

    RaincoatsGeorge, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

    It only kind of counts but dead rising 1 fits. You have to follow an exact sequence of events, be at exact spots at exact times, or the main story ends and you can only get bad endings.

    It’s actually really hard because you end up having to run from one boss to another and if you’re late there isn’t enough time to resupply. I eventually got to a boss fight where I didn’t have enough time to do anything else and I just couldn’t get past him. It isn’t that the game ends, but it just completely scaps the main story progression and says something like ‘the truth is lost forever’ .

    I almost give that game a pass purely because of how much you're meant to start over again anyway. It's not like you spent the entire time on one perfect go through with no do overs, you'd probably already restarted a bunch of times by then, it's just another crazy mistake you couldn't have known you could make in that game.

    Not that that really makes it better, but it's not on par with doing the same thing in a giant RPG, unless you only got one shot or something, but knowing that game I would doubt it. I never got that far, though, that game is... weird and particular

    RaincoatsGeorge,

    Definitely a weird game but it worked.

    I just miss the sport games of 10-20 years ago. They were just fun. Of course they weren't perfect but we didn't care. Now microtransactions have ruined everything....

    weirdo_from_space,

    Good sports games are still made, they just don’t have the offical roster… out of the box.
