Not to diss his train of thoughts because it is hard to get money to fund risky projects. What he said is entirely base on the premise that vest majority of games are funded by publisher money, kickstarter or not that’s the reality for the longest time.
BUT, the part he is missing is that pitching is very important, the so called “risky” business is a economical/statistical analysis as of late. And you CAN get funding if you propose something that are sound and reasonable. Like today I was surprised that Immortals of Aveum has no microtransactions, even though the gear/resource interface hinted that at one point that’s probably considered. So EA, new IP, new engine tech, high spec req everyone spit at, can you come up with a even better counter argument to Rami? The game launched, after checking discord and discussions, consoles seems to run fine and smooth. I meet the 1440p/60fps requirement on PC so I took the plunge bought it this morning. Guess what, it delivered, I only tweaked 2 things, changing boarderless to full screen and disable vsync. Game is running very smooth on 60fps locked even at the big open field scene a youtuber tested yesterday that dips into 40+fps I have no issue at all running at exactly same location he did. (I did change the sensitivity settings on my mouse/in game so I don’t feel too dizzy cause there is no mouse smoothing, if your dpi set too high it’s actually hard to play. )
Will they be financially successful? I don’t know, it’s a big gamble for them and EA. But as far as Rami’s argument concerned, there is no problem getting funded and stick to your guns as long as you can prove to those doing the internal tests. Believe me, EA game with Denuvo, from dev I didn’t heard of, I did my homeworks and then decided to support them and took my risk. This is where I vote with my wallet. It works right after install and I haven’t run into bug/crash yet, and I hope this game is successful.
edit: is it fun? I also can’t be quite sure yet cause I just got out of tutorial area. But the mechanic is sound, KBM might be a bit odd on how they set the default bindings but you can change those, I did plan to give controller a try later.
You were not exaggerating. It looks more like Minecraft than DRG. I was definitely expecting “Deep Rock Fantastic” but instead it’s more of a survival game than anything.
The PS Portal seems really, really niche. I guess it’s good for families with only one TV set, or for folks who really like to game in bed, but who knows. We’ll see how it sells, I guess.
It’s not meant for traveling, is the thing. You can’t use if for cloud gaming. It has to be on the same wifi network as your PS5 to play games. It’s meant to be played in the same house/apartment as where your console is. That’s why this seems so very niche.
Expect without even having the functionality of Android. If it at least took an approach like the Nvidia shield so it could be a full on Android tablet or gaming or media machine it’d be cool. But, just a barebones streaming device is disappointing.
Sony: you know how everyone loves these cool new portable consoles? Let’s do that, but they can’t leave their house, they can only use it to play their ps5, ohb and we’ll make it about half the price of the console… yeah, they’ll fucking love it!
I loved the psvita, I used to play it basically anywhere because the battery lasts forever and it’s tiny. I can’t justify buying one of these new consoles simply because they’re so big! If Sony were to make a psvita 2 with a similar footprint and battery life I’d be first in line.
im the opposite. i hated how thin the vita was and how small the buttons were. thats why i love the steam deck, its a lot more comfortable for me to hold.
All I remember about this game is the Empire bases had a bunch of gaps you had to jump, and I was thinking “How are Stormtroopers navigating this on a daily basis?”
I don’t doubt there’s a market for this, I just wish for $200 it had more use cases than just “PS5 controller with a screen”. I have a Steam Deck with Chiaki4deck installed for this and while it does cost 2x, it’s a proper gaming machine and a computer.
I wonder what the internals are, and if it’s moddable.
games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported.
Would have been cool if they figured out a way to stream those games directly to the Portal.
EDIT: Looks like it runs Android, with Google’s services removed. androiddev.social/…/110939834517107216. Wasn’t aware that there were leaks that confirmed this.
I am pretty sure they know how to get proper cloud streaming going. Even the Vita has it. But why would they? So some people who don’t own a PS5 get this thing and then don’t buy more games and just stream their PS plus games? I can’t imagine they would make much money that way!
Isn’t every company making most of their money off their subscription services anyway? Why do they care if I buy a PS5 or not, they literally lose over $50 every time they sell a console. Maybe I am just weird, but I have a PS subscription and have only bought two games… COD for my wife and GTA.
If anything, the smartest play would to require an extra subscription for the device to stream.
Very excited for this. This was one of my favorite games on 360 when it came out. Just recently played the remastered and felt it was a bit repetitive. Hope they’re able to get some variation going with the combat for the sequel.
I still need to go through the DLC. Has anyone gone through them?
It’s already out and the reviews on Steam are NOT good, not good at all. The general consensus is that this game is actually a 4 hour long glorified tech demo that’s so unoptimized that you can’t even reach 60 fps on a 4090. Some even hesitate to call it a game. Yeah, I think I’ll stay away from this one.
