Carighan, do games w Embracer Group is Killing Your Favorite Video Games
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

You know, in a world of dozens and hundreds of game makers losing their jobs on relatively short notice because some rich fart gambled too high on a potential buyout, the lesson should really not be “They’re killing your favorite video games”. I’m sorry, but that’s just in poor taste.

bassomitron,

It’s a click bait title for sure, but it grabs the attention of game hobbyists in order to explain a grave situation and I justice going on.

But, I don’t disagree with you, either

Semjaza,

You gotta start them on the road to “Capitalism bad” somewhere.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Then start them with the thing that’s actually killing video games: live service.

Phegan,

I do think it’s a reasonable entry point for those who do not understand the labor implications of this. Approaching people with the sentiment that their favorite games are dying makes the segue into how problematic embracer actually is much easier.

We can ultimately be upset about both things, that embracer is killing games while also killing jobs.

riccochet, do gaming w LGR Oddware - Novint Falcon Haptic Controller from 2007

I actually owned one of these. It was not too bad but I still can feel how weird the movement felt. I ended up not really being able to reconcile how the controls felt cause this worked in like 2 games and I had to use my mouse like 95% of the time anyways. In the end it was more just like a thumb stick… Just on a larger scale. You had a limited range of motion and once you reached the end of it, you would just hold it there to keep turning… Slower than a mouse. Was nice for fine movement control over a small area.

I bought and still own a Razer Sixense Hydra. I would 100% have bought this thing had I owned a gaming PC back in 2007

Is this the one that was planning to be a full open world RPG originally? (Sui Generis IIRC) I’m guessing that’s unlikely to happen by this point. Exanima still looks fun though

Skyhighatrist, (edited )

IIRC Exanima itself was never meant to be the full open world RPG. It was always intended to be a smaller game to perfect some of the game mechanics for their ultimate goal of building that open world RPG. I have no idea if they still plan to build that other game or if they are working on it in parallel or have ditched it entirely.

Edit: The community seems to believe that the devs are still planning to make Sui Generis at any rate. Exanima has been in EA for 10 years or so now, and based on what I’m seeing online they are almost at their 1.0 release version, at which point they will divert their attention to to Sui Generis. Take with a pinch of salt, as this information comes from the r/exanima community on reddit.

ArtikBanana, (edited )

Yup.
Sui Generis is being worked on simultaneously. Anything developed for Exanima is used in Sui Generis.

It’s one of my favourite games despite not being finished yet, but it will probably gain more popularity once we get co-op and a multiplayer arena mode.

Minnels, do games w What Ever Happened to the Original Baldur's Gate 3?

Thanks for posting the video. Was a good watch and I will watch some more videos from that channel. Really good content.

I remember when I read about bg3 not happening back in the day and it made me sad. I wondered a lot about what could have been bit I had no idea it was going to be in 3d and the only pictures were concept art. It is sad when IP and legal stuff comes in the way of creativity etc. I am happy that BG3 exists today but it is not the same.

Haven’t watched the video but wasn’t Throne of Bhaal originally intended to be BG3 and was later downscaled to an expansion because of reduced time and resources?

ooli,

May be. But apparently there was later a BG 3 planned in 3D… but since their is no footage I have to trust this dude did his research

is that the same as doing crime and being gay

being crime would be tricky. You’d have to illegally enter another country, or something like that, right? Or crispr your genes such that you sweat methamphetamine

Doing gay, I have no idea. Same thing as being gay? Just engage in homosexual relations? Sounds easy enough I guess

Well, I can confirm that it can still be downloaded. It’s notable that this is one of the few that even got a native Linux PC version as well and yes I agree on the narrative that this game is very very underrated. Not your average military shooter.

knokelmaat,

Is it underrated? I remember playing the game because of all the positive things I kept hearing about it. I loved it too, it has some really amazing scenes that stuck with me to this day. I just thought that this was the common opinion.

bekopharm,
@bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Mebbe I should have phrased it more as “underrated in the beginning when it went on sale and was considered a sales fail” 🤔

knokelmaat,

I honestly didn’t know that it did bad on release, that certainly merits the name underrated!

Daxtron2,

It reviewed poorly and had lackluster sales, so yes.

DdCno1,

76/77 average on Metacritic is not terrible. Do you dismiss anything that gets less than 80?

Daxtron2,

I didn’t say terrible I said poorly. Average scores = reviewed poorly when it comes to games.

Toribor,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

I sort of feel like it’s correctly-rated. It’s a serviceable third person cover shooter with an interesting setting and some great visuals. The reveal of “you’re the real monster here” has a good amount of impact but it’s hard to totally land that message when the game offers no alternative.

The main problem was that all that was a bit of a pleasant surprise. The good parts of the game were sort of hidden behind the disguise of a generic military shooter. The box art couldn’t possibly be more boring. It sold very poorly and gained momentum later for being actually good.

It’s a bummer to see it leave Steam knowing that less access to it will mean less people get to check it out.

Vodulas,

The reveal of “you’re the real monster here” has a good amount of impact but it’s hard to totally land that message when the game offers no alternative.

Yeah, the game lost me at that spot. I tried literally everything I could to avoid it, and a literal invisible wall stopped me. The thing is, the narrative has been done before. Classic Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now, but with a slight twist. It hasn’t been done in games AFAIK, but it takes a deft hand, and Spec Ops failed for me

Crotaro,

it’s hard to totally land that message when the game offers no alternative.

I’m of such split opinion when it comes to this argument against the game. I’ve read it so many times now and I kind of agree that there should have been some nuanced choice that changes the story in such a way where Walker tries to redeem himself? If I recall correctly, the only choice that actually made a difference for the end, was what you did in the very end scene with the mirror, right? And, of course, the choice not to play the game.

Then again, would it have been better if the player had had the option for a less shitty (not necessarily good or positive) path? Sometimes in life, especially during war, the only things that happen to you are shit and even what you do might be out of your control, because you only have one option that results in staying alive or because your mind is so focused on the task at hand that you can’t even consider other ways of tackling a problem. This might be a bit graphic, but I think Spec Ops puts you in the passenger seat with a maddened driver. You tell the driver your destination (finishing the game) and he just hits the pedal and, no matter how much you protest, he roadkills every person on the way there. The car doors are unlocked and he occasionally stops, giving you an opportunity to get out. When you finally arrive at your destination and complain that he killed all those people, he goes “If you had left the car, I would’ve stopped.” I don’t know, I feel like I have a point here, but I can’t put it into words.

Also, there are games like Animal Crossing that aren’t criticised with “Well, the message (of positivity and being rewarded for hard work and cooperation while being friendly) falls a bit flat, since the player doesn’t even have alternative options, aside from not playing the game.”

So, yeah, I’ll leave it at that now, since I think my comment is plateauing in its insightfullness.

AVeryCleverName,

I think the crux of spec ops was less about morally judging the player or even the protagonist actions. In my opinion the driving theme of that story was encouraging critical analysis of the media we participate in, in this case, video games. It’s not so much that the player had no choice but to do those bad things, the important part is the way the context of the surrounding narrative framed those choices. And then extrapolating that to other games of a similar ilk and frankly media as a whole.

AVeryCleverName,

It’s kind of a cult classic. I remember it getting a lot of praise on neo gas and that’s also why I played it. But in the larger arena of video game culture it’s kind of just a footnote.

Toribor,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

The narrative is something that can really only be experienced once. It’s a game I really enjoyed but I haven’t had an urge to play it again.

dillekant,

Disappointed that gmtk doesn’t address the fact that this wouldn’t really be an issue with physical media because it can be re-sold and kept in a library.

bekopharm,
@bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

At least Steam lets you still download it when you purchased it before. I checked today just to make sure it really does still download. Granted, this is as long as Valve may exist but I don’t think there is anything DRM related here that would stop anyone from making a copy of the downloaded game 🤔 May try that later.

HKayn,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

According to PCGamingWiki, the game does have Steam DRM. It was available DRM-free on GOG.

bekopharm,
@bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Ah that’s where I did see it in DRM free. Yes you’re correct. It refuses to launch without Steam running.

dillekant,

While, yes, Steam doing this is… OK… The resale is what matters. Technically passing it on via Gog’s download is “piracy”, but having some sort of physical identifier for the thing makes it legal to resell.

SomethingBurger,

Unless the physical media is tied to an account forever, like what Microsoft tried to do with the Xbox One but backpedaled after massive outcry, or what Valve has been doing for two decades without massive outcry because it’s okay when Valve does it.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Wait, do Steam games have physical releases? Like, not just a physical box but physical media you install the game from?

SomethingBurger,

Not anymore but it was commonplace before 2010. Steam killed this.

bekopharm,
@bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

In all fairness: A lot of physical releases from back in the days can be redeemed on Steam nowadays. It’s not often obvious but it works for a lot. e.g. for Prey (the 2006 one: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prey_(2006_video_game) ) - which saves me the trouble to look for a CD drive I no longer have xD

Yes, I understand that archiving is more tricky nowadays and even Valve may defunct one day. Alas in reality is a > 15 yrs old CD also prone to errors and may no longer work already.

Vijfsnippervijf, do notjustbikes w “15-Minute City” Conspiracies Have It Backwards

Freedom of movement is not just freedom to drive a car, in fact, car ownership is extremely expensive and you have to sit in traffic a lot. Rather, it’s about going where you want to, when and how you want to. About walkable cities and affordable or free and abundant options for public transit. Therefore, the suburbs in America are less ‘free’ than the 15-minute city (source: The Netherlands has a LOT of 15-minute cities, and they’re really nice to live in, even without a car!

gibmiser,

blu,

Habahnow,

No idea, but the rule is a 2 staircase requirement. All building 2 floors and higher in most of Canada and US must require 2 staircases which means that they take up more room in a building and limit the possible room configurations in the building as well. The reason for 2 staircases is because of the increased fire hazards US and Canadian homes faced due to using wood for home construction unlike in Europe where extremely fire resistant materials are used. The host indicates that fire deaths have dropped significantly because of fire retardant technology throughout US and Canadian homes that makes the 2 story rule pointless for home less than 6 stories tall.
