Fantastic! Always love their analysis

murmelade,

I’m not into “game journalism” or whatever you’d call these guys. What sets them apart from any old random steam review?

icermiga,

They review graphical quality, not gameplay. They’re very thorough and detailed, and generally very pleasant and positive and fair, and non-sensational and have no emotional manipulation engagement stuff

murmelade,

That actually sounds interesting to my cynical ass. Will check them out, thanks!

Vupware,

the_q, do games w How Nintendo locked down the Switch 2’s USB-C port and broke third-party docking

The switch 2 has already become the best selling console of all time. Capitalism always wins no matter how anti consumer a company behaves.

Almacca,
@Almacca@aussie.zone avatar

Also, never underestimate the stupidity of the masses.

TacoSocks,

It’s not the best selling console of all time. It had one of the best launches, but the PS2, DS and OG switch sold 160, 154 and 152 million. Switch 2 only has 5 million so far.

I’m honestly sorry for any fan of nintendo, this is getting worse day by day.

Blaster_M, do games w Microsoft’s Forza Motorsport developer hit hard by Xbox cuts

I like Forza because I can play it on PC, unlike Gran Turismo. Shame.

lustyargonian, do games w Microsoft is raising prices on Xbox consoles, controllers, and games worldwide

Steam can’t release a “console” soon enough.

OutlierBlue,

Thousands of them already exist. They’re called PCs.

SupraMario,

Millions you mean.

Hundreds of millions.

j0ester,

And if you want that SteamOS experience; Bazzite and ChimeraOS is nice

lustyargonian,

There’s some nuance.

  • One of the bigger issues about PC gaming these days is the shader compilation stutter. Valve is able to precompile and upload these for SteamDeck, so a fixed hardware “console” from them will solve this problem too.
  • SteamDeck is pretty weak but games are still sort of optimised for it. Same would be true for such a console, making devs focus on a target platform directly.
  • Assembling PC yourself can have its own issues. You may not get all the ROPs, or a new Windows update may break your games, or you may occasionally update drivers to make a game more playable without black screens, or wouldn’t turn on with a controller when set up as a “console”. I’m not saying it isn’t doable, but there is an audience for consoles who would love whatever SteamDeck has done for handheld but in console form, and may not want to bother with setting everything up. Valve can disrupt that
AnUnusualRelic,
@AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world avatar

You can connect the deck to your tv if you want a “console” experience.

Appoxo,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I did that at my friends place: Worked very good. Screen was turned off and connected my xbox controller.

Minor nitpick: If it’s connected via a powered dock they should circumvent the battery.

lustyargonian,

It ain’t powerful enough for modern titles sadly. I’m trying to say that there’s a space where Valve made steam machine with niceties of SteamOS and power of say PS5 can really thrive.

commander,

I think it’ll happen soon. Tariffs threw a wrench in everyone’s plan but Strix Halo currently exists. Ryzen 395+ is in minipc’s now and should give a solid ~PS5 level experience that should come down in price over time as AMD releases successor generations. At least now could be cheaper with Valve putting somethings out with razor thin margins expecting to get return from software sales

AnimalsDream,

The tariff situation makes it a bad idea to release or even announce new hardware right now. What they should do is finish Steam OS so they can officially release it for all platforms.

From the creators of paying extra to play online now bring us a more expensive xbox and games that no one bought and a monthly subscription to a mediocre library with games being pulled off monthly.

Oh no. Guess I’ll have to continue to use steam and GOG.

bread, do games w The System Shock 2 remaster comes out June 26th
@bread@feddit.nl avatar

I got excited for a second until I realized it’s a remaster. Yeah, I don’t really care at that point.

NuXCOM_90Percent,

System shock 2 is still a spectacular game

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

It’s also very easily modded and there are loads of graphical overhauls for it to choose from that bring it to modern levels of pretty, along with QOL tweaks, bug fixes and good balancing changes. Just remaster it yourself 🤷🏻‍♂️

Kelly, (edited )

That’s a bit like saying you can buy flour and bake bread.

Some people are interested in a product that is immediately ready to use as a simple convenience. Others might be on console that doesn’t offer the origial title or allow mods.

TachyonTele, (edited )

New engines do wonders. Especially for 20+ year old games.

NuXCOM_90Percent,

That comes up every time there is a re-release or a remaster.

If you are content with your setup, cool.

But this is Nightdive. They cook. It is already confirmed to have a subset of the community patch as well as improved visuals and hands and controls. So in terms of “worth it”… it probably is for the vast majority of people even slightly interested in SS2.

Agent_Karyo,
@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

Any recommendation for modding guide. I played it back in the day, but to be honest I stopped in one of the earlier levels because it got a bit unnerving.

Mostly looking for HD support, better textures/assets (but ones that jive with the vibe) and balance changes to make it a bit easier.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I’m kind of in the same boat. SS2 will always be there if I wanted to play it, and a remaster isn’t really making me more or less likely to. But a full remake would be very interesting especially since the studio was so successful with the SS1 remake and it turned out so well.

skulblaka,
@skulblaka@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah. Their proper remake of SS1 was excellent and I was looking forward to something similar for SS2. Especially a balancing pass on the skills to make some of them not completely useless.

Even remaking SS2 on the engine they used for 1 would have been welcome news, but it’s not clear that they’re doing that either.

Kolanaki, do games w Three years later, the Steam Deck has dominated handheld PC gaming
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Until more recently when they started getting competion, what other handheld gaming PCs even existed?

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

The first one I had was a GPD Win 2, in like 2018/2019-ish. You could do some fairly recent 3D stuff on it at the time, but it was better for 2D games.

Blackmist,

There’s been a handful but nothing I could name off the top of my head and the specs meant anything more impressive than Super Meat Boy might be out of the question.

Just cheap crappy Windows 8 tablets for the most part, with controller buttons tacked on.

Appoxo,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

GPDwin for example?
I always wanted a mini laptop basically as big as my current phone but actually mobile.
Sadly I didnt have enough F-U money :(

thedirtyknapkin,

there’s always handheld gaming pcs being released and going nowhere. the current generation includes the rog Ally and the Lenovo legion.

if you don’t follow this stuff religiously you’ve probably never heard of them, but they are out there. it’s just that no one really buys them.

the steam deck is the first successful one, but companies have been trying to make something like this for years.

derbis, do gaming w Final Fantasy iOS game shuts down over unfixable bug

I’d be curious what the API change is that caused the bug. I think it’s just as likely that this is yet another case of Apple pulling the rug out from under devs.

desentizised,

I agree. If it’s unfixable it has to be something out of their control. I mean nothing is unfixable but really the only explanation for a bug being too costly to fix is that something auxiliary changed which forces you to either go back to the drawing board or cut your losses.

The far cry benchmark is the most telling. Looks like it’s around a 15% uplift based on that.

Subverb,

About two months ago I upgraded from 3090 to 4090. On my 1440p I basically couldn’t tell. I play mostly MMOs and ARPGs.

darthsid,

Shouldn’t have upgraded then….

Critical_Thinker,

Those genres aren’t really known for having brutal performance requirements. You have to play the bleeding edge stuff that adds prototype graphics postprocessing in their ultra or optional settings.

When you compare non RT performance the frame delta is tiny. When you compare RT it’s a lot bigger. I think most of the RT implementations are very flawed today and that it’s largely snake oil so far, but some people are obsessed.

I will say you can probably undervolt / underclock / power throttle that 4090 and get great frames per watt.
