I’m not really a fan of Let’s Plays, so it makes sense my favourite is CowChop’s Shadow of the Colossus Let’s Play. After around five episodes they abruptly decide to rent an RV and road trip to the Grand Canyon, all while still “playing” the game.
You get to actually modify cars “by hand” swapping out or repairing individual components and the chassis can get bent up by big wrecks, you can buy new or used cars and tear them down and build them up and just cruise the world do street or track racing, demo derby etc. It’s all extremely rough but conceptually it’s the best thing ever, you really get to “own” a car and experience the highs and lows associated with that.
The closest game with any amount of polish I’ve played is Test Drive: Eve of Destruction you buy cars at the junkyard and take them to demo derbies, they need to be repaired upgraded etc and they have permanent damage from big hits.
Obviously there is My Summer Car and Mon Bazou both great games but they lack a racing centric gameplay loop and MSC in particular is too hardcore to be a mainstream game.
There was an ooooold, like, older than me, game like that called Street Rod, and I still end up going back to it time to time because there’s nothing quite like it.
I really like watching ChristopherOdd and Gab Smolders. Odd plays a lot of tactical games and popular titles. Gab tends to do more indie and horror but also does some popular games on occasion.
Yeah, this is a good one. Works surprisingly well for solo playthroughs, too. The base game for free is a great deal. Lots to do before you get to the later DLC.
Good writing, voice acting is miles above all other Elder Scrolls games, the magic and abilities are really fun (don’t know if it’s available with this free version, but Necromancer class is fucking awesome).
And so. much. lore. If you ever read the books in any of the games, there’s a particular individual who often comes up in necromancer books which sometimes net you a skill point in Conjuration in Skyrim. This game fleshes out that entire story.
You also get to discover areas we haven’t seen much of. Elsweyr, Black Marsh, Summerset Isles, High Rock, and more. Every province, basically.
Literally my only complaint is that I really loved Molag Bal’s voice actor in Skyrim and this new one doesn’t hit as hard for me. Actually goes for a few of the Daedric Princes. I know why people didn’t like his voice, but I fucking loved Hermaeus Mora in Skyrim. Also doesn’t hit as hard here, but it doesn’t matter much.
I should actually maybe get back to it. Kind of burned myself out, but now feels like a good time to jump back in.
There is some stuff (other than the story DLC) which essentially requires real money, but none of it is particularly necessary (although one could argue that the crafting bag is absolutely necessary, which I wouldn’t entirely disagree with).
They got the Skyrim voice actor (wes Johnson) back for old Herma Mora for the new expansion in Apocrypha. And they had him go back and rerecord the old voice lines as well. I think they did that with Dagon as well.
To add to this discussion, what do you all think of the controversy surrounding 2048 and Threes? I think 2048 is different enough to not be considered a copy; it has nowhere near the depth or the polish of Threes! I just think art is iterative. We should have the freedom to take ideas from other works of art and build something new.
I agree with you on the first point. I just don’t think the creators of Threes! had a valid reason in trying to get 2048 taken down from the app store.
this is my first Lemmy post and I’m still not sure if there are spoiler tags and such, so I’ll try to avoid spoilers as much as possible.
anyway, I don’t like this game.
I initially found the combat very fun but mostly flashy. Later on as I got more eikons and I slowly found something that was efficient for me towards the end, I had very little reason to go back and switch up but I appreciated the flexibility. The problem was that all fights essentially went the same way, and it ended up feeling like the combat system wasn’t deep enough. I really liked the hunts, however. And there was a particular boss battle that I think was truly executed perfectly.
Outside of combat, gameplay is dire. It’s not really worth exploring outside of the critical path - the loot is worthless. Way too many “talk to this person”-style sub quests with, more often than not, little payoff.
The plot is, I think, abysmal. The whole slave story is handled extremely poorly, and seeing how dumb the approach to this theme is, it’s not surprising that they flat out refused to include any black people. The outrage would’ve been too much. Fortunately (?) this whole slave stuff is forgotten halfway through, so you won’t really see more of it unless you focus on the side quests. Which… yikes. Some of the worst writing in the game can be found on the side quests. I initially was excited when Vivian was introduced, as I love me a good Map with Floating Heads of Key Players Where I Learn about the State of the World Sequence… but my god it all amounts to nothing but very convoluted ways of saying stuff like “the army moved to this location”. Incredibly tedious, and disappointing. As much of a bummer as this whole world is imo.
And speaking of bad writing, all the female characters of the main cast were done a disservice here. Jill during the Iron Kingdom boss fight was especially done dirty.
I have played every single FF from IV till XV (excluding the XIII series), and I don’t think this series will be for me anymore if it continues on this direction. I wish this game hadn’t disappointed me as much as it did. Spectacle isn’t enough to carry a game for me, and while I was not expecting something extraordinary I did expect something more thoughtful than this.
Gaming laptops are really just portable PCs. If you’re playing on them on in the usual “Keyboard and Mouse” way then you need to put it on a table to make that work properly. Maybe you could do it on a sofa but it’s very quickly going to get uncomfortable.
Handhelds on the other hand are extremely portable and happily usable anywhere. They’re also a lot cheaper than a gaming PC! I’m a big fan of my Steam Deck and recommend it a lot, but I should admit I also have a Gaming PC which I use for multiplayer stuff with my friends
I love FF, played them all and generally liked every one to varying degrees. I am about there with you overall on XVI. I liked my time with FFXVI well enough, but in my overall series hierarchy it is basically smack dab in the middle. I thought it was good but it didn’t blow me away like a lot of people are raving about. I certainly don’t regret playing it, but I also wouldn’t want to see this be the direction they take the series from now on.
I liked the characters a lot more than I expected. Story had pacing issues but overall it was good. Music was more atmospheric but generally quite well done, though thinking back to it now I can’t really recall any of the music.
Gameplay-wise though, it felt like it was lacking a lot of RPG elements. I don’t mind action combat at all, I am not a turn-based purist and I loved FF7R, but the combat in FFXVI seemed like a big step back. There really wasn’t any itemization, levels didn’t feel that impactful, and even unlocking nodes on the skilltree felt very low impact. About halfway through the game I had unlocked everything I would use until the end of the game, so skill points really ceased to matter. There were no resistances or elements, so even though the game makes a big deal about learning different magic-types (which are all 100% the same as each other), you can approach every single fight exactly the same. The big bombastic kaiju fights people loved were actually my least favourite part though. You were basically given a simplified version of the character you normally play, and they were all about 30% too long. They were a spectacle but weren’t actually all that fun or interesting to play.
Depends on your lifestyle and game choices. I have both (and a desktop PC). I would say 97% of my gaming is on the gaming laptop, and the remainder is split evenly.
Handheld is cool but often lacks good ergonomics for longer sessions, as well as limited GPU power. Desktop is obviously “the best” but for my games, my gaming laptop is good enough for 100+ fps so why bother going to my office and booting up the desktop?
The only time my laptop is not good enough is VR simracing, but that’s not a power problem, it’s just a matter of having all my simracing stuff hooked up to the desktop already.
Laptop beats handheld in screen size, power, compatibility, and controls for me.
If you do, obviously most of Nintendo's titles are worth having. Zelda games are an easy recommend, but also Splatoon is pretty great.
If not, there's tons of games that are good that aren't Nintendo games that I think are worth having.
Octopath Traveler is awesome. I haven't played 2 yet, but I can recommend 1 if you like JRPGs
All legacy FF games are on the platform to some capacity
Ace Attorney game collections are great if you like visual novels
Basically every indie is on the platform at this point. Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Axiom Verge, probably a lot of others but those are some big names that come to mind.
Otherwise, I would avoid ports that haven't gotten good reviews. Also, make sure that the games aren't "cloud only" unless you're comfortable with that.
At most you’re gonna get like $10-15 off on most 1st-part titles. Better off going physical and buying used, if you want to save money.
As for games, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Luigi’s Mansion 3 are great. Link’s Awakening, also. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are good too, but overrated imo.
