Not op. I saw the good reviews and so I thought I’d give it a try. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but I am very bad at that game and die all the time. I looked up other negative reviews and some people seem to agree with me that I just need more armor or something. I don’t understand all of the positive reviews and how difficult I find the game to be. I loved MW one and two and three, but I guess this one isn’t for me anymore.
You… you do realize MW5 is single-player and definitely not a “gatcha game” right? And has a pretty robust modding scene? And has a clan-based sequel coming up in a new engine?
Hmm… While it’s nothing like Outer Wilds and infamous for probably being the most obtuse video game ever created, I wonder if you’d like La Mulana? Metroidvania about being an archeologist where you sort of need to actually peice together the culture and history of the civilization you’re studying to move forward sometimes. It’s style of storytelling is closer to FromSoft (hence the obtuseness) but still.
I beat Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines for the first time on Deck. KBM controls bound to the system really did it for me and since it was a low spec game it ran flawlessly. And the game’s reputation holds up (well written and engaging but janky lol)
I can understand wanting mods, but at the same time, it’s not like you can open your iPhone without damaging it in the process. I guess I want to say that I can get why people would want to add stuff to their thing, but I don’t see why someone would expect Valve to have accounted for that.
When I get my new OLED the first thing I will do is crack it open and swap the SSDs. Partly because the other one has all my data on it and it be an eternity to move it over and partly because the old one has already been swapped for a 1TB.
You’re missing the point of this post… They specifically made a change to make it easier to open and put back together without damage, which is not the norm in most related industries these days. That’s a good thing that we have been conditioned not to expect because of companies like Apple that fully do not want you to open your device ever for any reason.
Your comment sounds like “well you can’t open an iPhone without damaging it, why should you be able to open a steam deck without damaging it”… Very much corporate overlord shill vibes.
Tried Hollow Knight for the first time on the Deck, it works so well!
I’m not even specially good at gaming but I thought Hornet (a Hollow Knight boss) was quite enjoyable and not that hard and I wonder if it has to do with the Deck controls, since everyone has mentioned how difficult that one is (I did find all other bosses very difficult so this is not a boast).
Edit to mention that Horizon: Zero Dawn is another one that I only tried with the Deck and it also works really well, though this one consumes a lot more battery compared to HK.
I am going to sound like an unpopular opinion but some games are just easier without keyboard and mouse. I personally have a controller for these games.
just want to say, if you have the choice to buy either the Xbox One or the newer Xbox Series controllers, it’s worth it to go for the newer one. Some of the buttons (the bumpers in particular) are way better on the newer controller.
Disagree on HZD unless there were significant updates. I was around halfway through the game when I bought my deck, loaded it up on there to see how it ran, and uninstalled after about 15 minutes of never being able to make it over 15 FPS on lowest settings.
It's playable, if stuttery, in town and in cutscenes. When you start combat it becomes a PowerPoint. Which is a shame, because I really really liked that game, but I finished it on PC instead.
Monster Hunter Rise has been scratching that particular genre itch for me on the Deck though. Rise was built for the Switch so it plays on the Deck like it was born there. Smooth as butter.
Now that I think about it, I had to tweak some settings for HZD according to some guide, but I don’t remember exactly what I did. After that, it worked quite well. Perhaps it wasn’t 60 fps but 40? For me that was good enough.
It could still depend on standards. For example people seem to say Rimworld is great on the Deck but I absolutely disagree.
Zero Punctuation for me. He has a similar taste in games to what I like and a so so positive ZP review is usually a solid buy for me.
I guess the name is changing soon to fully ramblematic? There’s drama with the owner of the ZP IP right now and the folks who actually own the IP are 100% gonna fuck it up. Creator is starting fresh after a walking from a bad deal is how I understand the situation.
I enjoyed the first game very much but never finished it because I was distracted by some other shiny object. How much does 2 spoil the first game’s plot?
In the first moments of the game they give you a full summary of the plot of the first game. If you want to play the first game for the story I recommend you hold out on this one until afterwards.
my “review” of it so far after 15 hours: marked as spoilers, but it’s not really a spoiler in terms of the story. I guess just don’t read if you don’t want to already know the game’s structure and difficulty (from my experience).
spoilerI’ve got 15 hours in it so far. I haven’t unlocked everything yet and maybe the story opens up more but it certainly seems like there’s less content. It’s just difficult to compare because there’s a bit more puzzle variety but also a bit more repetition. The game’s divided into chunks so that you experience a bit of puzzles then a bit of story, then you repeat it all, so it’s harder to parse for me how much of my content has been engaging with story vs how much of it was puzzles, whereas the first game was almost entirely divorced from the story. The amount of new mechanics is staggering but as I near the last two worlds I’ve been disappointed with what feels like a developer obsession with lasers. I know the lasers were a huge part of the first game’s story but they weren’t the only feature… I know mines frustrated a lot of people in the first game but honestly? I miss those. And I miss the fizzler thingies that didn’t kill you but still acted like mines. However I think with most mechanics being segregated between the 12 worlds, that opens up a lot more options when you get stuck. For example I hated recording in the first game. Took me ages to work out how it worked and I hated every bit of it, so when I got sick of it it was harder to try other things because in C world and most of B world, most puzzles had recorders. If you don’t like the gravity (“gun”?) mechanic in this you can just go to the 11 other worlds where 99% of the puzzles don’t have it. I don’t really know how to write what I think of it though because it’s so incredibly different from the first game. The story has also been vastly improved in my opinion, but I do think it would be nice to have a little less cutscenes. In general though I think this is one of the better games I’ve played in a very long time. Some people online seem to be saying that it’s “easy” compared to the first game but honestly I’ve been struggling so much with the latter puzzles. Early in the game I was spending maybe 10 minutes tops on a few puzzles but now I’m spending upwards of 30 - 45 minutes (maybe even an hour) on just one puzzle. I also am disappointed with the lack of easter eggs and unmarked secrets. (there’s no minimap but there’s a HUD with a compass that shows you were “?” locations are. I have yet to find more than a handful of interesting items that aren’t marked on the compass and aren’t part of collectible achievements). Maybe I’m just really bad at searching through them, but I remember loving how the first game was so full of secrets. You’d thought you found a way to break out of bounds but then there’s a star or a hidden QR code or pictures of cats… That’s also what made the first game so replayable. The developers didn’t bother with invisible walls or boundaries that pushed you out so you could break the puzzles in very ingenious ways. In this one I have yet to find a way to do that, sadly.
Fair criticism. It does feel more “on rails” to me, both story-wise and gameplay-wise, but at the same time the first one was a bit too broken (which made it very enjoyable but in a different way).
