tal, do gaming w Deadlock: How to select or level skill on controller?
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

I haven’t played it, but it sounds like the situation may be in flux:

oneesports.gg/…/does-deadlock-have-controller-sup…

At the time of writing, the action game is in closed beta, and it doesn’t offer native controller support. However, it does have an option that players can use to play the game with a controller.

With that in mind, the game is likely to feature controller support when it releases on PC, as it is expected to be Steam Deck compatible.

However, you must keep in mind that since the game is still in early development, it doesn’t offer any key binding or customization feature.

Additionally, even with a controller on default settings, some key actions in the game may not be mapped, so you might encounter limitations during gameplay.

In the near term, if a keyboard can do what you want, if you can dig up macro software for your platform that can look for specific gamepad combinations and send keystrokes as a result, I imagine that you could make it work that way.

I hope so.

It baffled me that Valve released a game that isn’t really compatible with controllers not long after releasing the Deck. I was kinda hoping Deadlock would be very controller friendly. When/if this happens I’ll give it a second look.

About This Game

EARLY DEVELOPMENT BUILD

Deadlock is still in early development stages with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay.

LIMITED ACCESS

Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.

It’s not even Early Access.

Like, if you want to play it at this point, you’re gonna get something that isn’t done. It’s hopefully playable, but…shrugs

hand,
@hand@lemmy.studio avatar

My apologies, when I said released I meant released for public testing / playing (ie, it’s current state).

I’ve played a little with keyboard and mouse as well as a controller (using community settings) and currently it very much feels like it would be difficult to play with a controller (I’d like to stress I’m hoping and happy to be proven wrong about that further down the line).

My surprise was that Valve have brought about a game like Deadlock which currently (to me) feels very much like a keyboard and mouse only game. Again, looking forward to that potentially changing.

released for public testing

I mean, it’s not publicly-available either; it’s just available to a select group of testers.

I haven’t been following the game’s development. But my guess is that the devs are going to prioritize targeting the machines that they’re using to do development of the thing. They won’t be using a Deck to develop the thing. This probably won’t be the only tradeoff made, either – I’d guess that performance optimizations aimed at the Deck or other lower-end machines might be something that would be further down on the list. I’d guess that any kind of tutorial or whatever probably won’t go in until late in the development – not that that’s not important to bring new users up to speed, but it’s just not something that the devs need to work on it. Probably not an issue for this game, which looks like it’s multiplayer, but I’d guess that breaking save or progress compatibility is something that they’d be fine with. That’s frustrating for a player, but it can make development a lot easier.

Doesn’t mean that those don’t matter, just that they won’t be top of the priority list to get working. What they’re gonna prioritize is stuff that unblocks other things that they need.

I worked on a product in the past that had a more “customer-friendly” interface and a command line interface. When a feature gets implemented, the first thing that a dev puts in is the CLI support – it’s low-effort, and it’s all that the dev needs to get the internal feature into a testable state for the internal people. The more-customer-friendly stuff, documentation, etc all happens later in the development cycle. Doesn’t mean that we didn’t care about getting that out, just that we didn’t need it to unblock other parts of the the development process. Sometimes we’d give access to development builds to customers who specifically urgently needed a feature early-on and were willing to accept the drawbacks of using stuff that just isn’t done, but they’re inevitably gonna be getting something that’s only half-baked.

I mean, if it bugs you, I’d just wait. Like, they aren’t gonna be trying to provide an ideal customer experience at this point in the development cycle. They’re just gonna want to be using it as a testbed to see what works. It’s gonna inevitably be a subpar experience in various ways for users. The folks who are using the thing at this point are volunteering to do unpaid testing work in exchange for getting to play the thing very early and maybe doing so at a point where they can still alter the gameplay substantially. There are some people who really enjoy that, but depends on the person. It’s not really my cup of tea. I dunno about you, but I’ve got a Steam games backlog that goes on forever; it’s not like I’ve got a lack of finished games to get through.

Zoot,
@Zoot@reddthat.com avatar

Maybe try actually playing it on the deck then? How are you even gonna complain about something you haven’t tried, for a game no where near done.

I have played on my deck. All the keys are mapped and you can easily play the game with all of the controls.

Can you really only get this through a google group and google play -_- ? Please allow another ways of downloading this, like an APK download.

EDIT: Sadly the game relies on google play services it seems, so I won’t be able to play the game probably. Good luck with the development o/

schamppu,

Managing two release pipelines is already a lot, and we currently don’t really have the time for supporting yet another one when 99.9% of users are fine with AppStore and Google Play. It’s something I’ll probably figure out at some point when we have enough time for that though!

And yeah, only relies on Google’s Recording API which is part of the services. It’s really annoying that they made (just recently) the pedometer APIs part of Google Services, but I can’t really change that either.

GreyCat,

Yeah I saw that on discord, and it is understandable. I don’t know anything much about android dev to add anything else haha
Kudos on the design of the game otherwise, it seems really awesome, I hope you will find a convenient solution at some point.

Baalial,

Is microg an option?

GreyCat,

Does it support the new API they are uaing ?

Baalial,

“Service Core (GmsCore) is a library app, providing the functionality required to run apps that use Google Play Services or Google Maps Android API (v2).”

microg.org

GreyCat,

The dev said it needs this “com.google.android.gms:play-services-fitness” part of the services to work, I’m trying to find a table of the things MicroG supports but I’m having a hard time x)

E: oh found it

E2: sadly not supported :(

This looks awesome!

Does it track steps from a smartwatch? I usually don’t carry my mobile when I’m out hiking and wouldn’t want to lose out on any progress in-game.

schamppu,

Currently no, but it’s the most frequently asked feature and planned to be added. Google decided to kill Google Fit APIs, which delayed our efforts on that front for a while as they replaced those with Health Connect that isn’t working too well at the moment, but hopefully will be fixed by Google soon.

I’ve been using it for the last few weeks, applied at the last post and just got in. Right now there is basically nothing to do in the app. I’ve heard there are plans for combat that you can do in the app. But I’d love the option to plan your next things. Like a to-do list. There are jobs and I’d like to go and cut 214 Birch trees. Not more, not less. Currently I’m sitting at 17 stacks of birch logs (each 25) since I was walking for a long time without time for the app. I didn’t need as many and it seems like my steps were wasted. I’m still super low level but there are items that are worth 0 copper, others are worth 1 copper and processing 2 of them (costing steps) results in an item worth 2 copper (wasted steps). However to get to another area I need 4.5k so that seems somehow punishing. Regardless of those nitpicks it is really nice, got me moving way more than I would have (started walking while on calls during work) it’s definitely an incentive but I’d really like to plan my steps ahead. “Go here, gather x amount of an item, process said item or collect another…” You probably understand where I’m going otherwise shoot me a PM I love the game, recommend signing up and once I’ve seen a little more than walking cutting trees and then planks I would consider a one time purchase. (Or maybe a stylish shirt or cool tattoo only available through mtx. Once p2w is in I’m out

schamppu,

There will be no MTX or P2W!

And there are quite a lot of things to do in the game already. I recommend to explore the starting area, and there’s nothing stopping you from planning things you want to do. If you’re feeling a little bit lost (which I totally get, the game is still lacking a proper tutorial and starting quests) I recommend to check the wiki. There are guides there also how to make money. The NPCs don’t pay pretty much anything for early game unprocessed materials, but there are several ways of gaining coins. You can also get past the Fort of Permafrost by going under water and skipping paying for the toll entirely, for which you’ll need to find Diving Gear.

Thanks for the feedback! ❤️

SupraMario,

Have you thought about putting in a scheduling system? Like being able to queue up a bunch of stuff to do? Then the game telling you the # of steps required and then you can go on about your day?

schamppu,

Yes! A limited queue system and notifications are both planned to be added in the next update.

SupraMario,

Awesome!!!

thingsiplay, do gaming w Best way to play the original Prince of Persia Trilogy?

Do you want emulate the games or play on real hardware?

bullshitter,

Emulation

thingsiplay,

I can’t tell you which version is the best for you (and your hardware). The first thing I would lookup if the particular version for the emulator is working well (have in mind, the reports are not always up to date): Dolphin for GameCube, PCSX2 for Playstation 2 and Xemu for Xbox.

DdCno1, (edited )

Xemu is by far the least desirable option. Immense hardware requirements and relatively limited compatibility. It’s a miracle it’s functional at all. I would only use it for games that you cannot play through any other means - so the small number of Xbox exclusives that were never ported to other systems and don’t work through backwards compatibility on newer Xbox consoles. Midtown Madness 3 comes to mind. I’m glad I finally got to experience this forgotten game by the Battlefield developers - but it was barely playable at 640x480 on a Ryzen 5 5600. The experience reminded me of very early PS2 emulation and not in a good way.

PCSX2 is usually decent and has made immense strides in recent months, but it usually runs multiplatform games worse than Dolphin, which is the gold standard for console emulation. However, not all ports of games are better on Gamecube. While the console is more powerful than the PS2, the limited amount of storage on the system’s proprietary discs resulted in quite a few compromised ports (edit: and the PS2 has a few hardware tricks up its sleeve that no other system of the time can replicate, particularly in the effects department). Still, it’s usually the best course of action to try Gamecube/Wii emulation first and resort to PS2 emulation only if you’re noticing downgrades. There’s also the little issue with PS2 games that some rely on the controller’s analog face buttons for certain mechanics (e.g. short jumps, long jumps, throttle/brake, certain attacks), which are not present on newer controllers most people are likely to be using. Sometimes this can be rebound reasonably well, e.g. to a modern controller’s triggers, but not always.

All of the above also applies to AetherSX2/NetherSX2 and the Android port of Dolphin, by the way. On mobile devices in particular, the lower hardware requirements of Dolphin are worth keeping in mind - although lower-end devices are likely to struggle with Gamecube and Wii games anyway. This is not an issue on PC anymore; even basic PCs from over a decade ago will run Dolphin flawlessly, whereas PCSX2 can be punishing even on modern CPUs with certain games at higher resolutions. The original PS2 version of Shadow of the Colossus for example is so demanding that it’s actually a better idea to emulating the slightly enhanced PS3 port through RPCS3 instead.

For a good overview over current emulators, I highly recommend this wiki: emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

thingsiplay,

Nice write up. It depends on you hardware too (if its strong enough). Some games might be best played on Xbox, so it makes sense to try Xemu. I personally prefer Dolphin and PS2, because they are integrated into RetroArch as cores (in Linux). At least he is looking for the best graphics, and that should be the Xbox versions. But I didn’t try the Prince of Persia games yet.

bullshitter,

If asked to choose between dolphin or pcsx2 , what would be your choices?

thingsiplay,

This depends on the hardware you are playing on, the version of the emulator and the specific game. I don’t have any experience with Prince of Persia games, so cannot make a recommendation. I personally play on RetroArch, which means the PCSX2 core is renamed to LPSX2 and is a little bit lacking behind the standalone emulator. So I would tend to use Dolphin for Gamecube emulation instead. But if you are using standalone emulators, then it might be different story.

When researching the web, people seem to talk about the PS2 versions of the Trilogy being the best. So based on that loose info, I would probably tend to recommend that one. But check out compatibility for each game in the links I gave you.

I signed up, happy to try it out and give feedback. No idea what my average number of steps is because I don’t super care about that, but I’d expect it to go way up if I suddenly did care (through a gamified app).

drphungky,

I’m actually dumb and my Garmin tracks my steps, so I DO know exactly how many I take (27,689 weekly). Damn I need to use my treadmill desk more consistently. That’s low.

I saw in other comments wearables don’t work. That’s kind of a bummer. I like to leave my phone charging on my desk and let the watch track.

schamppu,

Doesn’t work as of now, but this feature is something we’re well aware a lot of people need, and high in our priority. We’re just waiting for Google to get their tech together so we can start supporting it.

drphungky,

Have you looked at direct integration with Garmin Connect? My guess is they and probably Fitbit have the huge majority of the market.

schamppu,

Yup, I have! From development standpoint, building integrations with each of the manufacturer is not really an option for us right now, a it’s both a lot of work and we can’t afford to buy the devices to test it out.

drphungky,

Ah, gotcha. Well, best of luck. I’ll let you know what I think when my beta invite comes in. Still waiting.

As someone that played R6 siege for over 6 years. It is complete when the game’s dysfunction can no longer be overlooked because of the intermittent highs you get from a good play you made in a round.

Just got admitted to the closed beta a few weeks back and have been absolutely loving it :]

This is everything I want from a gamified step counter with none of the things I don’t want!

Looking forward to push notifications to help me remember to queue up the next activity when the last one is complete

Thank you so much for making this!

schamppu,

Our next update (Quality of Life) exactly aims to iron out most of the kinks remaining in the core loop. So being able to queue starting an activity after traveling, equipping saved gear presets, being able to organize bank & inventory, push notifications (that are opt-in and customizable) and cleaning UI stuff where it’s been reported confusing for some.

We’re aiming for this to ship in the next couple of months along with some content additions. Thank you so much ❤️

PixelTron,

This sounds amazing, I’ve been playing for a couple of months & really enjoying it. Having never played RuneScape or anything like it, it’s been quite a learning curve, but it’s all very chill so you don’t feel bad if it takes a while to spot a certain feature or remember where a certain screen was in the sprawling menu system (which is fairly easy to use once you get used to it).

In the first few days/week I found I needed to interact while on walks to make the most of the short step requirements for early activities, but that soon levelled out, & the walk buffer with 2x multiplier is a really nice touch. Every few days/week I try to leave it on idle to build back the buffer, then everything feels relatively quick to progress for the next few days.

Really awesome work & look forward to the upcoming updates whenever they arrive. Big thanks to you & the team!

TheDarksteel94, do games w Is assasin's creed origins good?

It’s alright, but I couldn’t get through it. It just was lol. Travel between quests took too long and the desert is not that interesting to me personally. Parcour was shallow and I hated the combat and progression systems.

I loved almost all of the old school style AC games, but they started to drop off after the Ezio trilogy. 3, Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate were fine, but they just didn’t quite have the same charm or were lacking in other areas. Still had a fun time with Black Flag and Syndicate.

WolfLink, (edited ) do games w Recommendation engine: Downvote any game you've heard of before

Sanctum (and its sequel Sanctum 2)

It’s a tower defense where you also have guns and go fight alongside your towers as a first person shooter.

Both Sanctum and Sanctum 2 are worth playing and have slightly different vibes. Sanctum 1 is simpler while Sanctum 2 has more complex build crafting. Also Sanctum uses a square grid while Sanctum 2 uses a hexagonal grid, and Sanctum 2 has some tweaked enemy mechanics, including enemies that target destroy the towers or killing the players over just going for the core. I think Sanctum 2 tries to make the player feel more important instead of the towers being the main focus.

Kedly,

Damn, I own this game, its worth boosting so it sucks I had to downvote xD
