I finally finished satisfactory! I’ve played during early access but there wasn’t really an ending for it then. 2,600 hours total in game, 550 of those were this last factory. It’s done!
The PS2 Ace Combat games (4/5/Zero) are still best-in-genre as far as I'm concerned, and have held up exceedingly well in general. Aerial dogfighting with good controls, good mission design and interesting story.
Sky Odyssey is a more "relaxed" little flight game that I also like, still got game-like controls but no combat, just missions where you fly through hard situations.
One of my favorite eras to live through and emulate!
Aside from Dark Cloud 2, mentioned already, I also really love:
Katamari, but on Deck the native version is better and includes the sequel.
The Jak and Daxter trilogy, simply amazing games! The first or the second are usually the favs. 1 is a solid mascot platformer. 2 also is, kind of, but adds guns and cars and a slightly GTA inspired open world. 3 is also fun but leans harder into vehicles and generally isn’t regarded as highly.
Odin Sphere. All the VanillaWare games are great, but OS is one of the most beautiful games ever drawn, and has really fun brawler\rpg combat. GrimGrimoire is another of theirs, also good, kind of a side scrolling RTS.
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are both a lot of fun, especially if you love Disney or SquareEnix games. If not, they’re still pretty fun and have an… interesting, if convoluted, lore. I probably wouldn’t recommend if you dont care for Disney though. Probably worth playing Final Fantasy 7 first as well. It’s referenced quite reverently and is a great standalone game (and PS1 still counts I think, haha).
Devil May Cry 1 and 3. You can skip 2, even the fans and creators don’t care about it, and 3 is a prequel. DMC1 is a landmark game, and is required playing in my opinion for being both important and incredibly fun. It can be quite hard though. 3 is arguably the best in the whole series, and holds up really well near the top of the genre to this day.
God of War 1, 2, and 3. They’re fantastic action games, and pretty influential still. I dont like them as much as DMC, but they’re still pretty fun.
There were actually a lot of pretty mediocre DMC clones on PS2, like Gungrave or Bujingai. If you love the genre, they’re neat and OK fun. God Hand is quite funny and kind of unique, probably the best of the 3 listed here.
I see Okami in there and I approve! Although I think the remasters released on other platform more recently are a better way to play. I also preferred the Wii version back in the day.
The Sly Cooper games and the Ratchet and Clank games are also both really excellent series. I liked Jak more, but they’re distinct games with their own neat elements. Sly’s particularly unique as a mascot stealth game.
Metal Gear Solid series and the Tony Hawk games are obviously excellent, but you’ve got so many other ways to play those I’m not sure they’re worth emulating.
Zone of the Enders, 1 and 2. ZoE 1 is infamous as being the game that came with the first MGS2 demo on it. The game is fine but short, and mostly serves to set up ZoE2, which fucking rules! You pilot a badass mecha and it just has a really fun plot, great music, and good action. An underrated gem!
Not your jam I’m sure, but I’d be remiss if I didnt mention the many hours I spent playing Capcom vs SNK 2. Still one of my favorite fighting games, legendary roster and soundtrack.
If you’d like a roguelike, I’d suggest Baroque or (PS1) Azure Dreams. Both pretty fun, quite long games with lots of replay value. Baroque is uh… well titled, kind of challenging to get into.
Ah, there were so many good games in that era. Truly one of the most stacked console lineups ever.
Good catch, my bad, I thought it was just the trilogy collection on PS3. It’s probably been since it first came out that i played it.
I went general on MGS because I couldn’t remember which game premiered on which console generation without looking it up either, but it’s 2 and 3 for PS2 (and 1 from PSX).
I pirated the RDR remaster and felt very entitled to because I bought it way back on xbox360 with the Undead Nightmare mode, but that whole DLC is broken even though they still sold it to me on the Xbox store. So I pirated to new remaster and when I went to play Undead Nightmare, it’s still broken lol
I did too. As much as I hate MS, Xbox live is really our only way to play with our friends (who live all over the world because my husband is a night owl). I got Ultimate for giggles and it turned out my husband games so much it was a good deal. It’s definitely not at the new price. I personally have only used the console to play Minecraft over the last two years since I can’t get Bedrock on my steam deck without some major fuckery.
Half-Life 2. It brought me into PC gaming, as well as introducing me to Garry’s Mod, a relatively simple sandbox tool for creativity, complete with a wide array of assets to use.
I also really appreciate its moody world design that doesn’t often explain things directly to you.
Accidentally, because I fell in love with the characters so much that I started watching the actors’ streams on Twitch and learned that I probably have ADHD.
The first one that comes to mind is Ocarina of Time. I was 10 when it came out. I didn’t know video games could do that. Been a huge Zelda fan ever since.
Also metal gear solid 2. I was 13 when that game came out, my brother and I rented a ps2 without a memory card. We were obsessed instantly. We left the ps2 on all weekend so we could beat it. I replayed it recently and it still holds up. Kojima is on another level.
Same, I only played OoT and MM when I was kid. The itch to play other Zelda games was bothering me for the longest time. So luckily over the years, I bought some random used Nintendo consoles off friends, last year I bought bunch of used Zelda games and finished them and emulated some games that I couldn’t get irl.
I wonder how many of us will go through our whole lives being able to mentally trace the route between Freeport and Qeynos. Or the perfect knoll-grind route in Blackburrow.
I can give a spontaneous lecture on the lore of EQ np and it’s a distressingly pointless use of brainspace that could go to literally anything else as a better use. That said, I fucking love EQs unhinged post-imperial apocalypse setting with its catguys (who have cat animal buddies) on the moon fighting goth vampires with a fetish for leather while snakepeople chill in their pyramids surrounded by vacuum to keep away a sentient genocidal fart unleashed on them by the god of fear.
Final Fantasy 7, the first two Fallout and Disco Elyisum, Shenmue to an extent, but the Yakuza / Like A Dragon franchise probably tops all of them. I had stopped paying attention to video games after the dreamcast (I considered Shenmue the apex of what I liked in video games and couldn’t find something similar), discovered the Yakuza franchise through Judgment in early 2020 and I was hooked, it was everything I had ever dreamed of in a game. I bought a PS4 specifically to play them, bought 0 to 6 during covid lockdowns and pretty much blasted through the franchise in a year. Rekindled my interest in games and in Japanese stuff, made me take my ass back to martial arts and generally pay more attention to how I behave and look after bad breakups and depression. Disco Elysium came very close to the same impact, I might add.
All of them, really. 0 is the craziest, but all of them are just great. Even 3 which is widely considered the “worst” one is still a masterpiece, especially for its time.
Life is Strange 1 - There are just a lot about life that I wished I could change. Lots of regrets. I think about the idea of butterfly effect a lot. I know a lot of movies also show this, but they often portray in a very “high stakes” scenario which its hard to feel relatable to, since its so far detached from realism. Some people might relate less, but for me I can relate to the Alex a lot, the emotional aspects of life. I wasn’t an orphan, but I feel practically like I’m one. I wasn’t originally supposed to be born, I kinda feel like this life, this “timeline”, is an anomoly. Everyone in my family hates me, kinda like how
spoilerIn a flashback / dream sequence, prospective adoptive parents would reject Alex, just like how my home country’s government have legally rejected (tried to, at least) my existence, and my parents, my older brother, they all hate me. And I don’t even have a “Gabe” like Alex has. Which hurts even more That family argument thing before the dad abandoned them is also relatable. My parents would frequently threaten divorce, and threaten to abandon us. There are arguments all the timex between my parents, and my mother and older brother, and then my they would turn their rage towards me, the youngest in the household. I didn’t even have headphones to tune out the yelling. It was miserable, it was agonizing. And I relate to how Alex never felt like there is a “home” And also the ending how almost nobody really believed her (choice dependent, but I fucked it up somehow) I don’t even have the ability to feel emotions, yet everytime I hear those arguments at home, I feel like as if I was Alex, like I had her abilities to sense feelings. And those feeling are explosive and contaminates the entire house.
