Advance Wars, of course.

I haven’t seen any mention of “Steamworld: Heist”, yet. It’s a very different sort of game engine, but scratches the same itch.

SoupBrick, do gaming w What are your favorite metroidvanias?

Hollow Knight is fkn good.

Metroid - Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Fusion, Dread

Dead Cells - Metroidvania/Roguelike

Ori series.

Nine Sols.

Dead Cells

Never really agreed with the Metroidvania label, same with Skul: The Hero Slayer. You unlock different biomes (and side rooms), but the items to do so are more like keys. Just my thoughts on that.

I find that the lack of ”coyote time” in Hollow Knight makes it completely unplayable for me. Shame since the controls otherwise feel snappy.

De_Narm, do games w What are your favorite Tactical RPGs?

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, above all else.

That being said, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 1 and 2 are awesome. They combine SRPGs with the usual SMT combat - I don’t think I’ve found something similar yet.

You move around like you would in any other SRPG, then you can attack enemies in range to enter normal turn based combat - however, at most, you can only play out 2 full turns before combat ends. Afterwards the next unit moves. Each unit represents a squad of up to three characters you will be batteling with, usually a human and two demons. Depending on your squad, you may have different movement, range and abilities.

I enjoyed Wasteland 3 a great deal too.

capt_wolf, do games w What are your favorite Tactical RPGs?

X-Com - UFO Defense and TFTD are definitely my favorite. Fallout 1&2 are a close second and I’ve been meaning to play through them again. Ogre Battle is a distant third, with Front Mission right behind it.

Jesus_666,

There’s a reason why oldschool X-Com players kept coming back to the games despite technical issues like the Groundhog Day bug. (Thank all applicable deities for OpenXcom solving those issues, though.)

capt_wolf,

Absolutely loved both of them! I think UFO Defense was the first pc game I played on our first 486. It was one of the first games I ever successfully hacked.

Not sure how many people know, but there’s another game from Gollop, Rebelstar Tactical Command for Gameboy Advance. It’s part of the Rebelstar series dating back to the ZX Spectrum. It plays pretty much the same as the original XCom games.

Deus Ex: Invisible War, and Dragon Age 2.

I liked them both. Not as good as Deus Ex 1 or DA:O, but I enjoyed and finished playthroughs of both games.

krinks73,

I enjoyed Dragon Age 2 as well. It’s just that it’s an action movie to Origins’ House of the Dragon. It’s just different genres.

Lv_InSaNe_vL,

So the developers of $20 games are homeless?

Lots of Indie game developers actually don’t make enough to live off.

Let’s not pretend developers are going to get any money from these price increases. It’s all going to the publisher’s shareholders.

RedditRefugee69,

Which is why I avoid games with big publishers and shareholders.

Dual nominations for Paper Mario: Sticker Star & Paper Mario: Color Splash. The only thing I really remember about them is that I played them and they left me without any feelings about them whatsoever.

Just the other day my brother came over and we played OG Bubble Bobble. Two guys over 40 sinking a few hours into an adorable little co-op game. We got to the final boss and called it a night.

I picked it back up the next day, eventually beat that boss and texted my brother to let him know we beat the game.

I’m guessing something like a “justice boner,” but with misinformation?

Agent_Karyo, (edited ) do games w Why are people gurgling the switch 2 so hard?
@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

Volunteer PR work (including knowingly spreading misinformation) is extremely common for all fanboys, it’s a Nintendo specific thing.

EDIT: I meant to say it’s not a Nintendo only/specific thing. It’s true of all hardcore fanboys, even outside of game.

NutinButNet, do games w Why are people gurgling the switch 2 so hard?

Game prices? I understand the Nintendo cult is always stiff. But for the last 10 years these people bitched about $70 games. And now they are just throwing excuse after excuse defending $80 games now. But the lie I’ve been hearing is “Sony has been selling $80 games since the PS5 came out” No… No it hasn’t. There is not one base PS5 game for $80 ever made.

I’m very much against this and always have been, but I think not everyone has been. Some people will buy these games at any cost, especially when it comes to Nintendo and children. Children don’t understand the true costs and parents just want a happy kid and think it’s not that bad of a price for their kid to be happy. Most probably don’t pay attention to the price to see that it once was $50 and now is $80 for the new games.

It’s infuriating for me because my boycott effectively means nothing when these people exist. But no matter, I’m happy with my PC and waiting on emulation when it comes to play these games.

SolidShake,

Man. AS a parent I didn’t even think about parents! With my kids it just comes down to if I can afford it or not. My son wants WWE 2K25 but it’s just too much right now. But yeah I could imagine there are a lot of parents and grandparents that just don’t care and get whatever for their kids.

NONE_dc, do games w Why are people gurgling the switch 2 so hard?
@NONE_dc@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s a reaction to the negative reaction the console had when it was announced. Just as there are people telling lies in favor of the console, there are those who tell lies against it. It’s a give and take between Nintendo simps and Nintendo Haters.

(IMHO None of this wouldn’t be happening if it weren’t for the fucking games at $80-$90)

Saperlipopette, do games w Steam Deck / Gaming News #19

My partner had been pushing me to join Lemmy for awhile, but I came across this sub and saw your posts and was motivated to finally make an account. I really enjoyed reading through the backlog of them and the amount of effort you put into your posts is much appreciated. Steam Deck, GOG and Linux are some of my main interests in gaming so it’s really great to read your enthusiastic and positive posts on these topics.

I’m also a big fan of what GOG stands for and thank you for posting that job post listing. I’m really tempted to apply to one of the positions even though I don’t live in Poland. I’m pretty qualified and it would be amazing to get to work there.

Also, as I’m new to the community I was wondering what the preference here is for long-form multi news post summaries vs short “breaking” news posts. There’s a few other people I follow through RSS who make these type of long-form posts and I’ve started making some of my own on my personal website. If it’s okay, I would like to take inspiration from your news summary posts to compile some news from other more niche topics in gaming and post them here if that would be of interest.

    PerfectDark,
    @PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

    I’m so glad you joined!!!

It can all feel a bit strange to begin with, that’s what I found anyway. There can be a sense of being in a…idk void where you’re not heard for awhile, but give it some time. Join communities here which catch your eye, comment on what interests you, and by all means YES - please do submit anything and everything here!!!

I’m pretty qualified and it would be amazing to get to work there.

form what I heard after posting that, the location was important for some of the jobs, not all. So, I’d say you’re going to only know if you’re the right fit, and meant to work there, if you apply!!! I do know the people there are absolutely lovely and care so much about gaming. Do it!!!

As to what exactly, and how exactly you should share on Lemmy/here in this community…that’s entirely 100% up to you. If anyone tries to tell you the ‘right’ way to do something, they’re clearly lost. We on FOSS spaces like here and Mastodon really, really need more contributions. I know that 99% of this kind of space has the life of the posts in the comments, that’s the nature of a forum-based world like Lemmy is, but I like to try things a little differently here.

Whatever you do, and however you do it, I’m excited to see it!

    And again, welcome to Lemmy. You’re in the right place :) :) :) :) :) :)

    Saperlipopette,

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

So, did they actually get ports to non-PC consoles, or did console-form-factor PCs just become more prevalent?

They were “ported” to the Steam Deck. A Linux laptop. Which can run essentially any Windows software.

    BlackAura,

With a built in game pad. And saying a game is SteamDeck supported means it supports SteamInput which means it supports the gamepad natively.
