I usually emulate on my Steam Deck. I still have a Nintendo Online subscription going as it’s required for multiplayer (hate that that’s a thing), but I rarely use the emulators. I wouldn’t pay for the Online+ subscription, it doesn’t seem good value to me.
I’m in a similar boat. Before I had my Steam Deck, I played retro Nintendo games on the Switch. However now I prefer to move between my Steam Deck, PSPi6, and Anbernic handhelds (depending on what I want to emulate). It’s annoying that you can’t get the save files off the Switch, though. I have some games that I got pretty far into, and I would like to move those over.
PS5 is nice if you can’t afford a PC capable of 4K or Ray Tracing for the games that are on every system ($500 for a machine capable of high fidelity gaming is a good value; couldn’t build a PC for that price with the same capabilities atm).
It might be more worthwhile if the exclusives for it weren’t able to be counted on 1 hand. There’s very little to warrant buying a whole system if you’re only interested in the exclusives.
The Ray Tracing argument and 4K are both shit arguments. On the PS5 most games are not 4K native, those that are, are locked to 30 which is an horrible experience. Ray Tracing is the same thing, and not only is PC Ray Tracing much more advanced and better looking, but it also locks you to 30 fps modes on PS5. I doubt the PS5 Pro will change that. If you forget the 30 fps sad modes that have 4k/ray tracing, suddently you can actually build a PC yourself that plays the same games for $600-800 (bit more than a PS5 but ITS A FULL PC, does everything, not games only) that for that price can play 1080-1440p games with ease at 60 fps with graphical fidelity similar to the PS5 if not better since you can better fine tune the graphical settings of all games. Ray Tracing will kill it, just like it kills the PS5.
In my style of life (PC-first) I myself consider a console to be one of those extra expenses that you have only if you have free money to spare. Having games on your couch and big TV is amazing, but if you need a PC anyway for daily life, might aswell waste a bit more and get a great PC for gaming too. If it’s a powerful laptop, it can also be your living room “console” just by plugging some cables anytime. Having a console after having a good PC feels like luxury to me (in a bad way), and very optional.
However if your PC is absolute trash but you see no reason at all to buy a new one, because your life style rarely needs to use it, and you absolutely cannot be bothered with Windows configuration and all its BS, then a console is 100% justified. Consoles are great for people who just don’t care and just want to play a game a few times per month.
I guess some people want a pc and a console like me and some people just want a big gaming pc. Both ideas are fine and no one should be looking badly at the other.
We’ve made our calculations and for me a « shitty PC » and an easy to setup gaming system like the ps5 is what I need.
But it’s perfectly fine for me if someone wants to go the other way. I’m not gonna say they are dumb and their way is shitty because it’s not mine…
The thing that always bothers me about people saying consoles are a good deal as the hardware is cheap compared to a PC is just that it gets more expensive really quickly with software. Particularly if you get a digital only console it only takes a few games until you’re at the price of a PC. I just can’t justify buying a locked down system anymore.
As someone who skipped the last generation… I think this one is way better… Because it’s fully backwards compatible. Since I got a PS5 I’ve gone back and played many games I missed. Meanwhile the only game for the PS5 I play is GT7. And since I’ve loved every GT game, it was worth it for me. I expect that GTA 6 will be the next PS5 game I actually get.
Jedi Fallen Order. I’ve tried a couple times because I really WANT to like the game. But I just can’t stand the fucking souls style of everything comes back when you save. And the boss fights are just too punishing (for me). It’s so frustrating to get stuck on a boss or lost in a zone and come to the realization that I WAS having fun and then the game got in the way of that.
Elden Ring. I had a lot of fun with the game restarting and playing through the first zone on like 6 different characters to try different styles and see what I like. But at some point in the second zone I realized I was just stressed out all the time. It wasn’t fun, it was stressful. I can appreciate the game and I don’t regret spending the money on it, but I realized it just wasn’t for me.
I think I’m done with souls games. They’re just not for me. I really wanted to play Jedi Survivor but I suspect the new cool stuff will just make me more frustrated with the souls aspects, Oh well.
I really wanted to like JFO but I just hated the combat mechanics, it almost seemed like it was lightsaber fighting underwater with how sluggish it seemed, and I hated the number of times I died early on from basic beasts just because you can’t break a 3-button combo so if they dodge ever so slightly that’s a good 2-3 seconds they have to lunge attack.
Pyre. The long-term goal is to get you and your boys out of fantasy australia, but there are complications along the way. Namely, who gets their freedom, and who doesn’t? Are you really going to let your goofy dog buddy go when he’s your best party member? Will you throw the match and let one of your favorite rivals win their freedom instead? Wouldnt it be really funny to let the little goblin loose back in civilization instead of someone who actually wants to go back home to their families? These are the tough questions Pyre asks of you, and they go places.
I know Pyre is probably Supergiant’s worst game, but it was still damn good and very overlooked. Everyone should check it out, the story was really good. Also Epic gave it away for free once or twice, so check your library.

I can’t speak to the others, but I have a couple 8bitdo controllers and they’re fantastic. If the aliexpress listing is legit, I’d go with that one, no question.
I’ve never heard of the other two brands, but cursory googling doesn’t sound promising for them.
I just bought a series of 8bitdo controllers, and they are fantastic. The off green/purple USB Xbox controllers are literally $20 USD a pop and imo feel better than the Series S controller. And that’s their cheapest option; if you are willing to spend money for more features, they keep getting better.
OP said he wants motion control though? I feel like his options for motion control controllers are EXTREMELY limited. Like Nintendo proprietary limited.
Apparently the 8Bitdo Ultimate DOES have motion control. I’d dare say it’s just hands down the correct option, unless you want to just flat buy a Switch Pro controller. That said, if off-colours don’t bother you, the Switch targeted Ultimate C Bluetooth is cheap af, has motion controls and actually has ABXY in the correct format.
Super Mario Wonder is the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World. There is so much attention to detail and the polish on every aspect from the gameplay to the way enemies act and react.
Super Mario RPG is the ultimate remake. It kept absolutely everything about the original while adding a few minor gameplay enhancements. Best of all, the graphics look like the original CG readers from the 90s but with perfect modern sharpness.
Deathbulge Battle of the Bands was an unexpected favourite. It’s a light-hearted turned based RPG with Earthbound and Undertale vibes, an amazing soundtrack and interesting and humorous characters.

My parents asked me to bring the VR kit like I did last year. It’s an old HTC Vive I lucked into for cheap from a friend who didn’t have space to really use it once he’d moved. I run things through SteamVR.
Had to bring the whole desktop but it was worth while - my brother and mum get a kick out of Beatsaber, my dad and cousin were all about The Lab’s archery game, Longbow. Nothing else was played on it, but those two are enough. Kinda like a little side-room arcade.
Of course you can’t really play with each other, not with my one headset and PC but someone playing draws a small crowd so it’s entertaining for all.
I wouldn’t really recommend anyone to get VR at this point unless they’re super into that kinda thing as the ecosystem of games is pretty weak for the price and setup, and it doesn’t seem to be developing very fast.
However, it was a real joy to have at Christmas. Even my very aged grandpa shot a few arrows and had a marvel at it.
Otherwise, I’ll always play a game or two of FIFA on the Xbox with my brother for old times sake!
Do you mount the lightboxes when you bring it with you? Mine has been languishing in a corner for a year because I have high ceilings in my current apartment and don’t feel like going through the trouble to mount them
I don’t. I don’t at home either. I’m sure it’s terrible practice and I’m courting disaster but just standing them there on the shelves honestly does the trick. They’re quite forgiving with the view angle it seems.
