peto, do gaming w What is some very predatory, sneaky and popular among children game?

People have gone over the ptw mechanics for Diablo in some depth. It’s not exactly a kids game, but it has all the things. Kids are kind of a bad choice for the real predatory stuff, you might get them to give you a couple of grand once, but if you can hook an adult you get to hit them every month.

If it must be kid focused, have a look at those cutesy merge games. Or just hit a popular game and look at the ads it’s running.

Thing is, most of these games are kind of bad unless those little pleasure hits really work for you, so you might not find them ‘fun’. These aren’t supposed to work on everyone, rather they are designed to really work on a minority of people.

vithigar, do gaming w The gaming industry needs to become more like holywood

As games get bigger and become more cinematic (and more expensive), there will be studios that grow and grow and then make big layoffs in a lull.

Do you think this doesn’t already happen?

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Studios actually got tired of doing this, because rehiring is expensive, and ended up on a post launch DLC pipeline to get closer to keeping everyone working.

RootBeerGuy, do gaming w How to let my kids find quality games on Android? Right now they only find the pay to win / ad riddled games.

www.darkpattern.games

I have not extensively used this site but it seems to have some good pointers

So maybe check with them there first, then install

sylverstream,

Thanks, interesting site! Bookmarked.

Hands down, Devotion by Red Candle Games. It was only on sale for a week when it came out, and was getting well-deserved rave reviews, but was pulled because an idiot put in an art asset that said “Xi Jinping Winnie the Pooh moron,” and Red Candle’s Chinese partner lost their business license and pulled the game from Steam. GOG was going to carry it, but they wimped out because Cyberpunk 2077 was about to come out in China, and they didn’t want to risk their sales, so they claimed “gamer voices” for why they were backtracking on carrying it, and refused to answer anyone asking them for details. The game is available, but only on Red Candle’s website,
but they were only able to get a store up and running after people had forgotten about the game.

It takes place in 1980s Taiwan, and is an amazing domestic horror - you play as the father, Du Feng Yu, cycling through three different years of his family falling apart, trying to figure out what happened to his young daughter. Some parts of it just hit way too hard, like this screaming argument between Du and his wife, when you’re playing as the daughter listening to it from her bedroom. It gets heavy. And then there’s the tongue thing. IYKYK.

I absolutely love this video by Jacob Geller, An Uncanny Really, looking at how Silent Hill 2 and Devotion handle the uncanny. Devotion absolutely deserves to be compared to Silent Hill 2.

This video, by Super Eyepatch Wolf, Devotion: The Most Disturbing Game You Can Not Play, is also really good, and opens with a lot of history for understanding Red Candle’s first game, Detention, which is also really good and takes place in a high school in Taiwan in the 60s during the White Terror.

Titanfall 2

Lord_Logjam,

Definitely didn’t get the appreciation it deserved on launch. I seem to remember it was launched right after that year’s Battlefield and right before that year’s CoD. Terrible decision. It definitely stood the test of time though and is very highly regarded now.

bl4ckblooc,

Titanfall 2 definitely got a lot of appreciation.

money_loo,

It needed more.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

Bought the game at Dollarama in Canada for $4 a few years ago. Still haven’t played it.

The campaign has some absolutely wild parts of it. It’s worth playing through that if nothing else

tetraodon, do gaming w Should I stick with The Outer Wilds? (EDIT: yes)

Tip: do use the ship log. It tells you where you still have something left to explore. So if you visited somewhere and missed some details, it will let you know.

Chocrates, do games w What games have the best mining/smelting/forging components?

Vintage Story. It is a survival game built by former Minecraft modders. It has pretty detailed metal crafting. You have to forge your items and then shape them on an anvil

simple,

On one hand I love vintage story’s focus on realism, on the other hand crafting and smelting stuff takes forever I sometimes wish it were as simple as minecraft. It’s cool the first few times but if I have to make another pot or heat up my metals and wack them a million times I’m going insane.

Definitely what OP is looking for, though.

Chocrates,

I agree, if it was that alone it would be fantastic imo but the hostile fauna AND the Lovecraft demons that spawn make it so frustrating sometimes. Being unable to find tin and dieing to wolves an hour away from base (with no stock way of finding your body) is what made me stop my last run and I haven’t picked it up in about a year.

alokir, do gaming w What is the most terrifying RTS game unit to be up against?

Basic builder units. You commit genocide against an entire civilization but leave one of these fuckers alive and 20 minutes later you’re facing en entire army.

TaviRider,

I’d prefer a commander from Supreme Commander. It can raise an entire military by itself, and it’s much hardier than basic builders. It’s deadly up close. Even if you somehow defeat it, your reward is a nuclear explosion.

Rednax,

I remember the matches where you transport drop you commander into the enemy base, so both your and their commander blow up inside their base. The hardest part was getting the game rules past the eyes of your friends while setting up the game.

Starburn,

In Total annihilation you could pick up the enemy commander. So you’d pick up one enemy commander and fly him over to another commander and hit ctl K.

caut_R, do games w I would like to enjoy Zelda BOTW but …

The weapon breaking is annoying, even in TotK still. It‘d be more bearable if you could at least repair broken stuff at a blacksmith or something, but as it is, I’m scared to lose my cool stuff to a buncha gremlins. So I‘m hoarding the good stuff and cope with poor throw-away weapons…

It‘s a bit like the „elixiers“ situation in old FF games: Game‘s over and you have 22 unused elixiers you saved for when you really need them.

AndreyAsimow,

There are some special weapons that you got from story quests that are repairable. Even rusty weapons can be repaired.

cmysmiaczxotoy, do piracy w With PLEX blocking Hetzner Hosting, I'm thinking of Moving to Jellyfin, but I have some questions.

Jellyfin can’t block media. The connections are direct. Jellyfin db performance is noticeably slower than plex with 500k media items but it can still handle it

FeelzGoodMan420, (edited ) do piracy w Is torrentgalaxy blocking users with adblock?

A quick 2 second google of literally this exact issue and website shows to force update ublock origin lists btw.

Click purge all caches, then click update now. That usually fixes issues like these in websites. Not sure why.

Neuromante,

Dang dang dang! We have a winner here!

Honestly, I got no idea were to find info about this situation (didn’t google censor this stuff?). Thanks!

FeelzGoodMan420,

I don’t think Google censored it at all considering I found the answer in 5 seconds lolol.

dual_sport_dork, do games w PSA: If you still have a Mojang account for Minecraft: Java Edition, you have less than a week left to migrate to a Microsoft account to avoid profile deletion
@dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, no. Microsoft can get bent at 43.625° angle.

ruckblack, do piracy w A way to disable laugh tracks?

Have you considered how awkward King of Queens would be without the laugh track? With the actors pausing for laughter every 45 seconds?

ColeSloth,

You don’t even have to imagine it. Do a youtube search for clips with laugh tracks removed. They exist and it really makes watching it weird.

reverendsteveii,

I’ve never done king of queens but friends and big bang theory without the laugh tracks are almost David Lynch levels of unsettling

PM_ME_FEET_PICS, do games w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

Fallout 1. During the term to the Master there is a 200 second countdown.

If you fooled up the speech check or want to do it differently and reload a save that was made after the countdown started then the countdown drops to 50 seconds. Making the fight impossible to do in time.

Mr_Buscemi,
@Mr_Buscemi@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I think you just helped me solve why I never finished it when I was 8 lol.

I was at the ending but was never able to finish it before the countdown ended. Now I need to install the game again!

mnglw, do gaming w Are there still any solid, updated minecraft modpacks around?

hey I know this is offtopic but have you migrated your mojang account to a Microsoft account? if you didn’t yet, please do so now otherwise your account will be deleted soon, like very very soon, September 19th kind of soon

I know, it sucks, we all hate it but since you mentioned 10 years ago I figured I’d give you and anyone else reading this a reminder

KaijuKoala,

I owned Minecraft Java and Bedrock. I migrated the Java to a new account and now have two copies of each.
