A lot of people talking about the arcade component, but Tetris was the original shareware. It was a phenomena that spread through the USSR until it touched a British entrepreneur. It didn’t even keep score originally.

Wilmo, do games w Half Life: Alyx is Five Years Old Today

I was really hoping for a PSVR2 port of Alyx, and the timing with a lot of PS games coming to Steam had my theorizing that was a compromise they made with Valve to make it happen but I think that was just wishful thinking now.

tacofox,

Whoa. A bit off from your point but I was going to say if you could use the psvr2 on pc it would have sold a lot better. Turns out Sony seemingly shadow dropped a pc adapter and now you can!

Honestly if that was a launch feature I would have probably bought one since ps5 doesn’t really have a compelling library for it to be worth it alone. Now I’m too broke to justify it :(

Acester47,

That’s actually how I played hl2 Alyx! Great headset, game was awesome. Wish there were more games of the same quality

Lv_InSaNe_vL,

Tetris 99. It’s like racing side by side with 98 other Sisyphuses to see who can get their boulder up the hill most efficiently.

Linktank,

God that game was such a letdown. I heard “Multiplayer tetris” and thought I could play with friends.

Nope.

greybeard,

There are plenty if multiplayer Tetris games out there. Tetris 99 was going for something very different.

Linktank,

Yeah, I hated it.

I don’t give a fuck how 99 other random ass people are doing in their own personal tetris game.

Far Cry 3 was absolutely a high point in the series. At least until the second half of the game. But the first half is incredible. The 2010s had some amazing video game villains. Vaas, Handsome Jack, Flowey, Father Comstock…hell, I’ll even throw in Andrew Ryan and GLaDOS.

I liked Far Cry 4 and 5. I’ll argue that Joseph Seed is the closest to a second Vaas the series has come. He’s not as melodramatic as Vaas, but he is a solid B- villain in my book. Pretty convincing, menacing, and rooted in his beliefs. Plus, I ran co-op a lot with my wife. So lots of good memories there.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a sucker for 4’s main Villain, but damn did Joseph do a really good job. I’d have to place Vaas above him though because the dude seems genuinely unhinged.

You’re right about the 2010s villains too, I really hope we get some really good ones this decade too

Zorsith,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I really didn’t like how railroad-y 5 was. Mechanics and gameplay wise its great, but the forced kidnapping story formula was so bad.

I felt Jacob Seed was more compelling as a villain than Joseph. Survival of the fittest extremism in the wilderness.

I still don’t get why they put them in games

Being a psychopathic murder machine is way too specific of a playstyle to be in every rpg with multiple action choices

Ephera,

I think, it’s a combination of things.

To some degree, it may make the player choice seem broader, as you can go full hero or full villain. In some sense, you can also go into the middle by kicking a puppy at one point and then helping an elderly lady at another.

But then, it’s also just hard to portray nuance. If the options are “pet kitty” and “punch kitty”, you know what’s what. But if it says “pet kitty” and “ignore kitty”, it becomes a lot less clear. Maybe the kitty does not want to get pet by a random stranger. You probably won’t be able to gauge its reaction from the character model to know what’s the right choice.
But you also won’t know what “pet kitty” really means. Will your character be gentle and back off, if the kitty does not appreciate the gesture? Or will they stroke that kitty until it bites them?

siv9939, do games w How the hell is there not a Green Arrow video game?

While I’m sure it could be a great game, it’ll never happen. WB just canceled a Wonder Woman game and shut down its developer. If they don’t have faith on a game based on one of their most well known characters, there’s no way they’d even green light a game based on a lower tier hero. A detective game based on the Question would be great too, but since he’s not one of DC’s top heroes it’ll never happen.

Airowird,

Yeah, but Wonder Woman is a woman from Europe, Green Arrow is a nepo billionaire, how can they not identify with him!?

kaosof, do games w Is anyone else playing Avowed? What are your thoughts so far?

I like it, but haven’t played more than a few hours.

The voice acting and (most) character faces feel insanely dated, though. Fantasy just comes off weird in an American accent.

The game runs poorly and doesn’t really look and feel that great considering the processing cost, but that’s just Unreal Engine 5 being shit.

Those are my biggest complaints.

Combat is pretty engaging and I think it’s pretty cool, but it can be kind of health-spongey. Feels like it needs some work to feel better and more fluid.

The story seems okay, although I haven’t gotten far. Kind of generic fantasy akin to Divinity Original Sin 2/Baldur’s Gate 3 or Pillars of Eternity (duh).

Honestly, I like that it’s not just another murder hobo simulator and has a bit more focused story.

It’s a pretty solid 6-7/10, which is fine. Maybe it’ll grow on me, but there’s no chance of it becoming another Cyberpunk 2077.

Hopefully they learned from making this and The Outer Worlds 2 is a lot better than the first one.

Strayce, do gaming w What's your "this is totally fine and I'm going to have a great time" FPS (refresh rate). ?

I’m old enough that I remember when 28FPS @ 320x200 was considered a target, and my vision isn’t as hot as it used to be. So long as I’m not noticing any obvious issues, I don’t really care enough to check.

Stern, do gaming w What video game franchises do you not need to start from the very beginning to enjoy? What would you recommend as the entry point into your favorite series?
@Stern@lemmy.world avatar

I think the better question might be what series should you start from game 1, brcause thats a much tougher question. Just about all the long running ones you can hop in wherever and be fine. Where you wanna start with Mario? Don’t matter. Whats the play for Final Fantasy? Probably whatever the recommenders first one was. Megaman? X, 0, or basic its nbd.

Yakuza is one I’d say you either start from the beginning (Technically Kiwami, but 0 is fine) or start at Like a Dragon (7, as it has a new protagonist)

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Black Mesa, if you are playing through the half life franchise. Also, probably one of the best remakes ever. I can’t think of a remake better than the original, and I played HL and Black Mesa back to back to be sure.

otp,

Trails in the Sky.

2 picks up immediately after 1, and expects the player to already be proficient with the battle system from the start.

3 would be confusing and boring without having played the prior two games.

And yes, it’s a subseries, but still. Lol

DjMeas,

I’m so glad I started the series from Trails in the Sky 1. I’m currently on Cold Steel 2 and it’s been a great time.

I would be curious to see which games would have you going back the furthest to fully get the story.

Maybe something starting off on something like the MSX or Intellivision that was never remastered.
