What Remains of Edith Finch. A psychological horror game that REALLY sucks you in. As you play, there is a lot of stuff that doesn’t make any sense, but there’s a secret (disturbing) meaning behind it all.
I spent a good chunk of a Saturday going through it and there’s no need to do it again, but it was a great ride!
The Unfinished Swan is such a hidden gem, honestly. I never hear anyone talk about it. Very unique style and mechanics and an endearing story. Some beautiful environments too. And pretty short, so not a big commitment.
Superliminal was cool, but I just didn’t enjoy it. It was fun for a bit, but I feel like the mechanic overstayed it’s welcome for how simple it is. There’s not very many unique ways to use it. That’s probably why Valve abandoned the idea too.
Still, it’s interesting and worth a shot. Plenty of people love it.
I feel portal could be replayed if you focused too hard on the puzzles the first time through, there were quite a few secrets worth exploring in that world, though none too deep unfortunately
I feel like portal 2 can get by on a playthrough every so many years based on the writing/VA making it enjoyable even if you half remember the puzzles.
I was going to write anti chamber, because I never want to play it again, but %'s 30-90 of the way through the game I was itching to start over. It had me so hooked, but then the ending just took the wind out of the sails so hard. Heck maybe 10-98% of the game had me itching to replay it.
Awesome game. I was high on cannabis when I played it, and managed to beat it in one sitting about 10 years ago. I want to play it while high on shrooms, that would be even crazier.
I haven’t really tried a walking sim before but I suspect I’ll find it boring - considering the reviews on What Remains of Edith Finch, I’m statistically unlikely to dislike it though, so I guess I’ll give it a shot and see what I think :)
Try changing your mindset when you approach the game, treat it like an interactive exploration or a digital toy. You might get into it more easily doing that.
I would not recommend Road 96 although some people seem to like it.
Personally I thought What Remains Of Edith Finch was boring as hell as none of the emotional points hit and the super-low-fi sequences made the game feel almost buggy and as a result ruined a lot of the atmosphere.
OTOH, I loved Firewatch, a great short interactive story about someone working in isolation and trying to get away from their life.
I hate the term “walking simulator”. It’s totally missing the point. They’re never about walking, but about discovery. Outer Wilds is a “walking simulator” in that there’s no combat and traversal is the only “action” you take. That’s definitely not what Outer Wilds is about though, right? That term should probably die.
Terraria. It has RPG elements and is simply fantastic. Often available at a discount on Steam which I only recommend due to the extensive content available via the Workshop.
Sundered is a cool 2D metroidvania / action rogue lite blend.
Absolutely gorgeous artstyle, unique concept…
Loop Hero is another rogue lite, that has a bit more of a management feel to it. The hero traverses the loop (the level) automatically - you just get to change their equipment and the environment. It’s a cool balancing act between making a tough level with synergetic enemy types/tiles and making sure your hero survives.
Hollow Knight - if you like metroidvanias you probably know that one. It’s incredibly popular! amazing game.
Dead Cells - same basically :) 50% off on steam right now!
Edit: Seems like you’re looking for retro/emulation stuff mostly? I might be misunderstanding your comments.
These recommendation all have Switch and PC versions. No clue how well they would run on yuzu
The Messenger (a ninja Gaiden style Metroidvania) and Sea of Stars (a Chrono Trigger style RPG)
Blasphemous 1 and 2 are some really fucking amazing Metroidvania games with some incredible pixel art.
Hollow Knight is another gorgeous game that, to me, is the closest thing to Super Metroid in modern genre.
Axiom Verge 1 and 2 are love letters to Metroid actually…
Octopath Traveler is a nice jrpg style game with great visuals that mix pixel art with modern graphics.
Cuphead is a great platform run n gun.
Blazing Chrome is a love letter to Contra.
Huntdown is a fucking awesome platform shoot em up with amazing pixel art set in a cyber punk dystopia reminiscent of old 80s-90s action movies.
And the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge is a great arcade style beat em up that really captures the old TMNT 4 vibes.
Mother Russia Bleeds is another great beat em up with a great story and ambiance.
The Undertale series is a great RPG series that’s worth a playthrough for real. It’s so much fun and the story and characters are so well written.
Broforce for complete pandemonium, especially with friends. It’s like The Expendables, the game. Except you can destroy everything on the screen.
Towerfall is a great multiplayer challenge game well worth it.
Gato Roboto is a fun game worth playing. So is Under Dungeon. Or Dogurai and Squidlit If you reach to play a more Gameboy style experience.
Flashback, a cyberpunk Prince of Persia style game. It’s an oldie but a goodie.
Crypt of the Necrodancer is a great dungeon crawler where you have to follow the beat of the music. It’s an amazing game. They even made a Legend of Zelda game based on it. Called Cadence of Hyrule.
I mean there are so many more but those are in my top on the switch.
MGS1 is my favorite of the series and is one of my favorite stories in gaming. It’s an incredibly mature story for all the wackiness thats still in it. The music is perfection. The performances are incredible. The characters are great. I love everything about this game. I think, somehow, the low poly graphics and textures adds a lot to the realism and grittiness of the game, despite being fairly arcady in gameplay. At this point in the story, almost everything that happens in it is believable, other than the supernatural parts (which are, in this game, actual supernatural powers, which adds a whole new layer of mystery!) I HATE how over explained everything became in MGS4 and MGS5, (and to some extent, mgs3 even.) I think MGS4 kind of ruined the series for me, even though mgs4 has my favorite gameplay. MGS5 just felt like a Ubisoft collectathon game to me, and vocal parasites can lick my ass with how dumb it is. It has good moments, but it feels rather aimless compared to MGS1-3.
1 has the most serious tone, but still has some goofiness and arcadiness that really meshes well with the story and visuals somehow. 2 and 3 stayed strong with the story, both being more goofy, but also having deeper meanings and plots. I like 1-3 a lot, and even 4 is a fun romp, but 5 just could not hold me. Ground Zeros was great! But Phantom Pain is just a slog for me.
Our opinions match up almost perfectly! I adore MGS1 so much. The amount of incredible moments in that game is just staggering. My personal favorite is the death of Sniper Wolf and the fight on top of the Metal Gear + the ending!
