About to finish Alan Wake 2 and its DLCs. It’s a great game but for me it’s bit too artsy fartsy. The flow breaks each time you switch the character, which in turn affects the pacing. Having said that the concept is cool, the fmvs integrated into the game are really high quality, they act as emmisive light sources, causing surroundings to reflect it. Pretty cool.

Just started playing Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time.

GrindingGears,

I got super into it in the days after my daughter was born a couple years ago. I had a few weeks off work, so I was letting my wife get some sleep at night and I’d stay up playing Cyberpunk until the baby woke up and needed fed. I’m actually on the last mission on the main campaign, but for some reason still haven’t finished it.

Finished playing Elden Ring DLC. Started going through Kenshi in Japanese and continued MH Stories (in Japaneseas well).

I picked Dauntless back up, though that might be short lived.

Still, it’s been fun and familiar, though they completely reworked the weapon and armor system back in December, so I’m having to relearn good builds.

CaptSatelliteJack,

I’m sorry for your loss

Telorand,

Still going as of last night, but I’m waiting until after the current season ends in four days to see where things are.

I wouldn’t mind spending a little to support a game I like, especially since the rework seems like a pretty good direction to go, but not if the company that bought them is just gonna shut everything down and possibly pocket any recent sales.

lustyargonian, do games w Got Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (retail, PS5) early, AMA

Does the crosshair remain active when you aim using the bow?

boblin,

No. But the arrow tip points towards the center. Weapon sway makes it nigh impossible to aim on the controller. I can’t relate to KCD1 since I played that on PC.

lustyargonian,

Ah damn. I wish they add an option for that

Omentree, do games w HoMM3 is still fun!

Am I the only one who really liked HoMM 4? I reinstall that every couple of years. Loved the fact the heroes were more active in combat. HoMM 3 is great too of course.

redhorsejacket,

4 was something of a departure from the formula, wasn’t it?

HoMM2 was my game from the series. For whatever reason, I never really progressed past that one, even though I had heard 3 was the consensus favorite.

Not 3 for me, but I really love 5. 3 has way too outdated graphics for my tastes.

This is an old game series, but it was proof that you could put as much blood and gore into a game as you wanted and still get a Teen rating in the US, as long as you’re just killing/dismembering Nazis.

BloodRayne. There’s a “cheat” to change a few of the visual effects. One makes her put all her weapons where she is actually storing them, and shows the unused weapons at all times. One makes the blood spray levels "more accurate to the actual amount of blood in the human body. The last one just makes her boobs bouncier.

Call of Duty World at War

You didn’t mention what platform but all of the Sniper Elite games are on Gamepass including the literally just released Resistance.

ComeHereOrIHookYou, do gaming w What video game franchises do you not need to start from the very beginning to enjoy? What would you recommend as the entry point into your favorite series?

So many nice recommendations here but here are some of my recommendations in genres (in top 5 form). All of them have PC ports (but not all of the series may be available on PC)

Platformers:

  1. Rayman
  2. Sonic
  3. Wonder boy
  4. Shantae
  5. Trine

RPGs

  1. Final Fantasy
  2. Tales of Series
  3. Star Ocean
  4. Elder Scrolls
  5. Pathfinder

Some noteworthy mentions for RPGs

  1. YS
  2. Mana

Shooters:

  1. Medal of Honor
  2. Shadow Warrior
  3. Doom
  4. Call of Duty
  5. Wolfenstein

Puzzles, point and click: Note: This was very hard to list since most of them are standalone and those that are not have interesting plot lines that you will not appreciate unless you play in order such as Syberia, Gabriel Knight, Secret Files. Walking Dead)

  1. Myst (You can play in any order but it would be nice to play the sequels or prequels)
  2. Broken Sword (Don’t touch 4 and 5 but you can play in any order and it would be nice to play the sequels or prequels)
  3. Life is Strange (1 and 2 are standalone stories)
  4. of Loathing series (It has turned based combat but very fun)
  5. Nancy Drew

I would say I prefer them in the chronological order of their release date. Some of the series I have listed completely have either loosely, small references or completely standalone only sharing a “franchise name”

Do none of the Final Fantasy involve each other?

ComeHereOrIHookYou,

SLR got busy IRL, well most are standalones.

There are some games in the series that has some sort of connection like X and VII through Shinra or Tactics and XII sharing the same world.

There are direct sequels though like X and X-2 or the XIII trilogy but they are not the norm

Ashen44, do gaming w What video game franchises do you not need to start from the very beginning to enjoy? What would you recommend as the entry point into your favorite series?

Monster Hunter. There’s tons of recurring stuff between games due to the nature of the series, but other than being able to go “hey, I recognize that from this other game!” there’s no reason to play the games in any particular order. I’d normally recommend World or Rise to new players, but with Wilds coming out in a month I’d say that’s the best option if you have the hardware for it. Wilds is a thematic sequel to World though, so starting with World before Wilds is something you might consider, though it’s not really necessary.

ryathal,

I haven’t actually played any of the old monster hunters before world, but from what I understand they are far more clunky, and you tend to fight the game almost as much as the monsters.

Ashen44,

You aren’t wrong, they’re definitely significantly more clunky, but they also absolutely have their own charm to them. If you’re a fan of “older” game design they might really appeal to you. There’s a much greater focus on the out-of-hunt preparation phase, and while the lack of many QOL features might be frustrating to some players, to others it adds to the personality of the games. They’re definitely games worth trying if you’re interested in retro gaming, or in Monster Hunter history, and they’re all easily emulatable.

That being said though, most players should probably just stick to the newer games, it truly cannot be overstated how much of a leap World was for the franchise. The amount of quality of life features and gameplay improvements is staggering, and going backwards from that can be a bit jarring.
