Also I understand his house burnt down in the late 20th century, and the joy of rebuilding/furnishing was another motivation for the game.

ByteOnBikes,

Yep! That was the story in the book. He grabbed his wife and neighbor, and when they returned, everything was burned to the ground!

He originally wanted it to be about a game where people interacted with furniture to feel things, and it was called Dollhouse. But play testers found watching their Sims more fun.

Factorio. And Cities: Skylines 2 if I’m playing it on Windows.

SilverShark,

Factorio just makes hours disappear, it’s an amazing game! Have you played the expansion?

vrighter,

played? Past tense? You must be joking

SilverShark,

Damn, you got me!

DieserTypMatthias,

Yes, I did.

zante, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

No hits for me this year 😒

BmeBenji,

Nothing fun at all? Not even games released in previous years? Not even games that you’ve already been playing for years?

zante,

I have a love hate relationship with CoD Black Ops Cold War. It stops me enjoying other games. I need something the break the addiction !

Over the last 10 year I’ve only played a few games that I would say were awesome and they are all pretty obvious.

GTA 5, stardew vallley, god of war, subnautica, dirt rally, cod Cold War, AC Odyssey.

I have a backlog, but I think the dopamine hit of a good CoD round prevents me picking them up.

BmeBenji,

COD is so interesting because there’s so many of them and so many people play them that it seems there’s always at least someone who loves each of the different games

ivanafterall, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?
@ivanafterall@lemmy.world avatar

Not really into MMORPGs, but I’ve been trying The Finals and it’s pretty cool. Like the destruction of Battlefield mixed with the movement of Apex Legends and maybe a light touch of Rainbow Six: Siege or COD. Definitely worth the $0.

Disco Elysium

I know it did not release this yer, but I got to it now, so it is GOTY for me.

Kolanaki,

I also finally completed the full story finally this year. I had always gone about 3 days in and started over trying completely different options lol

kurcatovium,

I got hooked, but I was like “what if I chose this option now?” all the time. So I started completely different character right after I finished. Got couple hours in, but… 1) it’s too fresh experience and I should probably give it a bit more time and 2) I wanted the new character to be this fascist, racist, egoist, alcohol and drug abuser, but damn. It’s so tough to play against some basic human principles.

Poopfeast420,
@Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I’m re-playing it right now, and it’s great.

kurcatovium,

I’ve played many different RPGs during my life, but Disco really is like nothing I’ve played before. Maybe, just maybe a little like Planescape Torment, but other than that? Nothing comes to mind. Which is unbelievable in this age, where most developers play it safe with basically sequels of successful games and new ones you barely can tell apart…

Poopfeast420,
@Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

While Disco Elysium is like no other CRPOG I’ve played, I have to disagree with your other point, because Indies exist with tons of innovative stuff in there.

kurcatovium,

True, but majority of non-entirely-indie devs do exactly what I said. Sadly some indie too.

passiveaggressivesonar, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?

None but the sweet siren of eve is making its annual beckon

abigscaryhobo,

I’ve always said I’ll play eve if there’s an afterlife. The idea is fascinating to me but I ain’t got that kind of time

passiveaggressivesonar,

I’ve come to enjoy it a lot more after giving up on minmaxxing and just having a good time screwing around

glimse, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?

WoW but losing interest. Got Keystone Hero on my main months ago and the only upgrades I have left are from the raid…And my guild isn’t big enough for mythic raiding so I’ll never get them. My friends are playing alts but there’s no spec I enjoy anywhere near as much as my main

TrousersMcPants,

I usually take a break between major patches. 11.1 looks really good though, I’m absolutely going to be playing that.

glimse,

Yeah, same. I’ll probably keep my sub and just play less. There’s still a few legion class campaigns I want to do on alts

FFXIV because I’m trans and I think it’s a requirement at that point.

_Lory98_, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

Haven’t really found anything particularly interesting from this year, so I’ve been playing mostly older games: my favorites were probably Trails from Zero/Azure and Chrono Trigger.

Some games I’m mixed on were Final Fantasy XIV and Metaphor ReFantazio. Both of them have parts I really enjoy, but also feel like they never reach the heights they could, both in gameplay and writing.

HeyJoe, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?

I have almost no time to play much, especially an mmo, but I have been trying Throne & Liberty and was kind of impressed from what I have played so far. Again, I am only at the beginning and barely did much, but from what I have seen, I like the mechanics, and it looks really good. I have no clue if it holds up once you get near end game stuff or if P2W takes over.

Spiteful_Gremlin, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

Animal Well, UFO 50, and Balatro in that order.

I usually jump between Guild Wars 2 and the Elder Scrolls Online myself. But Warframe has been on the side of them as well since forever, but its more of MMO lite.

GW2 is very nice when it comes to combat and such, even if the large world events aren’t really my cup of tea as the FX gets pretty bad. The story is decent enough and there is no subscription option at all. You do however need to buy the expansions and the living world story to get the entire game, i think there is a “complete pack” on steam. But its free to play the base game even though free accounts are very limited and should be seen more as an endless trial.

ESO has a far better world and deeper lore than GW2 does but i find its combat to be especially awful. A subscription is practically mandatory if you want to do crafting as there are a /lot/ of crafting materials and not a lot of inventory space. With the subscription you get access to the crafting bag which is just unlimited storage for crafting materials. The subscription also gives you access to all the episodes and expansions apart from the latest one. The story is often good, but nothing too exceptional.

Warframe is completely different as its a third person shooter. Its got some of the best movement in the business imo. Its entirely free to play as well with ways to earns everything in game, including the premium currency as its tradable between players. Its got some of the wildest lore of any game ive played and as such is quite unique in its take on sci fi. The story is great, but relatively short. If you do give this one a shot and hate the gameplay its not going to be for you as there is a lot of grind. But if you want to play a space ninja/walking WMD bouncing off of the walls while murdering hordes of enemies its definitely worth a try.

slazer2au, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?

2009scape. Because I can self host it.

dinckelman, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?

Guildwars has been my choice for quite a while now. I enjoy most things about it, and it doesn’t feel like a job either. I can do my things, take a break, come back and still have fun. Plus all the cash shop items can be bought with in-game gold, which i do regularly.

Apart from that, I still really like ESO, in theory, but Zenimax continue showing incompetence and greed, so the interest there is decreasing fast. And that’s a shame
