Elevator7009, (edited ) do games w Highlighting Smaller gaming channels

Not sure what qualifies as small-medium. I have appreciated Let’s Game It Out (6.02M subs), ymfah (1.19M subs), Tech Rules (432K subs), MartSnacks (80.1K subs). All focusing on cool gaming content, no being A YouTube Personality who shows their face and tries to form a parasocial relationship with you.

Let’s Game It Out seems to focus on !tycoon type games, maybe !citybuilders and tries to mess with or break the game. ymfah takes on some interesting self-imposed challenges in FromSoftware and Bethesda games and I think some of them are really well-put-together and funny, particularly Skyrim No Walking which comes with narrative arcs. Tech Rules explains stuff, kind of a video essay thing. MartSnacks basically has three videos of self-imposed challenges with Pokémon and does not seem to upload too often.

Anything below 1M subs, but thanks for the recommends. Also, What about RTS games ?

Elevator7009, (edited )

I am lucky I was able to give you what I did. Not a big video watcher. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. Have been meaning to get into RTS more but I have not actually played that many and have seen 0 videos about them, so I’m doubly unqualified to help you with that.

The YouTube algorithm is helpful to me because it knows I only click on gaming videos amongst a few other things. I just never ever clicked the annoying Person SLAMS Person outrage bait type stuff, and I also never clicked Not Interested on them (not sure if YouTube would actually listen, or if it would know by me bothering with “Not Interested” that topic pisses me off to see in recommends and thus it would conclude it ought to show it to me more), so it was forced to only show me the only stuff I engaged with at all: stuff I liked. So sometimes it feeds me nice niche gaming videos. I don’t watch frequently enough to exhaust its recommendations into being repeats of stuff I’ve already seen. It might (not sure) help that I also stuff gaming videos into my Watch Later playlist. This is what I did and I am not entirely sure it will work for you, but hey, it’s how I found literally all of these videos. Eventually sometimes it shows me cool stuff by the same person.

I’m currently downloading a 2 GB mod from Nexus for FO4, because I have “nothing to do”, except the main questline.

SolarMonkey, do gaming w Quests? Storylines? Never heard of her

If they wanted me to do the main story first they wouldn’t have made side quests and collectibles to pad out the play time immediately available.

This has backfired big time from time to time, for example horizon forbidden west, all that side shit is much easier if you actually do most of the main story asap…

But typically it just means the end boss is easier and that’s ok.

NuXCOM_90Percent, do games w I'm a console gamer so, Why the hate on the Epic Games Store?

There are a few layers to it. I’ll start with the legit reasons and hope the jackasses don’t read too deep in:

  1. EGS was built around the idea of providing what people need/want rather than EVERYTHING. Some of that was truly asinine (no shopping cart for like 2 years?) and some was a conscious choice based on everyone saying they don’t want their video game store to be a social media network. Unfortunately… people apparently DO want their video game store to be social media.
  2. Every store handles regional pricing and distribution differently and, allegedly, EGS had worse coverage in a few of the countries The Internet actually knows exists.
  3. Tim Sweney is a complete and utter dipshit and always has been and it is REALLY hard to not hate everything he touches.
  4. EGS rapidly entwined itself with Fortnite because Fortnite makes more than the GDP of some small nations. But we are hardcore gamers so we all hate Fortnite.
  5. Sweeney/Epic actually accidentally argued for consumer rights against Apple which, in turn, led to the full force of Apple running smear campaigns against Epic to make sure that we all realized how much we love walled gardens
  6. Sweeney/Epic ALSO kind of picked a fight with Steam by pointing out how little developers get from any given sale. Which… because we all love Valve means that Epic are assholes and developers all actively want to strive to get the negotiating power of a Call of Duty or Rockstar.
  7. Speaking of. EGS isn’t Valve and any alternative is inherently evil because we all love Valve.

So what was a mediocre store with a lot of free games and a tendency to give developers a giant sack of money for one year of exclusivity became The Devil.

Check back in (here or Mastodon!) and let me know what you think! Give it a little time, to me it has a bit if a cold opening, but it really opens up after 20 or so mins.

Well and truly, I love what the indie space makes in gaming these days, often more than the fanciest AAA offerings!

Many indies give a run to AAA games, even AAAA games too (I'm looking at you Ubisoft and your shart of a game Skull and Bones)

PlasticExistence,

Same reason I still haven’t played Black Myth Wukong

Hazzard, (edited )

Dude, what are you on about? Sure, it’s not as easy to run at 300 FPS, but it’s a new boundary pushing game and for what it’s doing it runs astoundingly well.

Absolutely gorgeous, and must rely on black magic because even DF reports it never has any stutter, traversal or shader, despite having massive levels with ridiculous fidelity and not even having a shader precompilation step. Hell, I can’t even understand how they got Denuvo to not introduce stutter.

Not to mention it’s somehow fairly light on the CPU despite huge enemy counts with good AI, raytracing, the best destruction physics I’ve seen in ages, and the streaming demands of massive levels. I’m completely GPU limited with a decent CPU and a 7900XTX.

Hell, it even hits 60 on consoles while doing all of this, the game’s performance is witchcraft. Eager to see the path tracing and how far we’ll be able to push this game a decade from now, like how I can run Eternal at native 4K/120 now.

Ulrich,
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

The fun thing about PC is everyone is using different hardware.

I dunno what DF is but I assume they’re running Nvidia cards on Windows, in which case you probably won’t have a problem.

My 6800XT doesn’t go above 40 FPS.

Hazzard, (edited )

I think you may want to look into DF’s recommended settings (just skip to the table and read from there if you aren’t interested in the details), touching base with my friend who I sold my previous 6700XT to, he reports a rock solid 60FPS targeting native 1080p.

That said, they don’t claim a performance increase that drastic, so you may have some other performance issues?

Oh, and DF stands for Digital Foundry, often considered the best source for benchmarking new games these days. They have several recent videos on Doom: The Dark Ages, graphics nerds always take an interest in a new idTech title.

Ulrich,
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

you may have some other performance issues?

The game has forced Ray Tracing and FSR is broken. Both of which lead to terrible performance on AMD machines. Those are the issues I’m having.

he reports a rock solid 60FPS targeting native 1080p

…am I supposed to be impressed by that?

Hazzard,

… am I supposed to be impressed by that?

It’s better than you’re getting on the tier-up card from the exact same generation as what you’re running, so… it pretty clearly indicates something is going wrong on your end.

And that’s with the forced ray tracing. Regarding FSR, DF recommends using XeSS, which I’ve had no problems with even using performance mode to play on a 4K display.

It’s only really fair to judge the performance cost of the ray tracing if you’re actually running the game fairly. If you’ve maxed out every setting to ultra nightmare at native 4K or something to get that “can’t go above 40FPS” figure, then I have no sympathy for you or your performance complaints.

Ulrich,
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

It’s better than you’re getting

It’s not. I’m running in 4k.

DF recommends using XeSS

Which also does not work. I am not alone here. Tons of people are reporting this. It’s not on my end.

If you’ve maxed out every setting

I haven’t. It’s the same settings I use for most games.

I have no sympathy for you or your performance complaints.

I’m not here for your sympathy. I’m here to answer OP’s question.

Hazzard,

Alright, fair enough. The brand new AAA graphical showcase doesn’t run above 40FPS if you’re insistent on native 4K from a 6800XT. I’m not sure that qualifies as “runs like ass” like your original comment, but it’s a fine thing to qualify.

I will add however that there’s no mention of XeSS issues on the “known issues” page, so I’m unsure what you’re referring to. Only an issue with FSR frame generation and manual window resizing, and frankly I wouldn’t recommend frame generation in any circumstance anyway. Perhaps the issue you’re referring to has already been resolved?

Ulrich,
@Ulrich@feddit.org avatar

I’m not sure that qualifies as “runs like ass”

As I said, I’ve had this card for years, I run tons of other games at 4k/60 high and they all work just fine. But it usually requires FSR.

there’s no mention of XeSS issues

Do a search for “DOOM Dark Ages black screen” and tell me there aren’t dozens of reports. Switching to TAA solves this issue but obviously strangles performance.

I wouldn’t recommend frame generation in any circumstance

Nor would I.

sugar_in_your_tea, do games w I'm a console gamer so, Why the hate on the Epic Games Store?

Here are my reasons:

  • no Linux support - Heroic works, why doesn’t Epic do what GOG do and revenue share w/ Heroic?
  • exclusivity deals, which reduces options outside of EGS
  • Epic’s anticheat works on Linux, but their own games that use it don’t, that’s a pretty big slap in the face

I certainly want more competition to Steam, but that competition needs to do something other than exist for me to use it. GOG is that, and if they properly supported Linux, they’d get most of my gaming money. But they don’t, so they only get some of it.

Yeah, this probably reads like a Linux fanboy post or something, but I’ve been using Linux longer than Steam supported it with its client, and I’ll still be here if Steam leaves. It’s my platform of choice, and a vendor needs to meet me here if they want my business. Valve did, so they get my money. I honestly don’t need much, I just need games to work properly on my system.

I do both PC and console gaming, and I’ve personally never gotten the Epic hate. As a store it’s not amazing but it’s fine. I will generally go to Steam first but I’m also not going to boycott a game just because it’s Epic exclusive.

Monomate,

I’m not petty enough to give up on their free games. I just claim them in the browser to avoid dealing with their launcher.

But it’s important to note that, if their UX is so terrible that people avoid their launcher like the plague, they get fewer chances to tempt users into buying anything. If the sales are low, most developers won’t even bother listing their games on EGS. It’s a death spiral.

It’s a bit of an apples to oranges comparison, because the Spectrum and C64 were general purpose computing devices that ran a single program at once, whereas the 5090 is not designed to be a general purpose computer, but a massively parallel acceleration card with a pipeline designed primarily for 3D graphics rendering.

A better comparison would be to a modern general purpose computing device, like a smartphone or desktop PC.

BeardyGrumps,

You have a valid point but I was purely interested in raw compute power. It was just a thought experiment that turned into a bit of research.
