Well, it’s a bigger, better Switch alright…

A little bit underwhelming hardware-wise. Extra joycon L/R don’t seem like they’ll factor in much in most singleplayer docked or handheld settings. (I guess those aren’t new buttons… .) The mouse thing (if that’s what they’re showing) is somewhat interesting and helps to keep touch controls relevant when docked. Top USB port, sure. Backwards compatibility is great news. Screen is…?

As always with Nintendo I think it comes down to the games. Mario Kart 9 hasn’t blown me away just yet, but we’ve barely seen anything at all so…

To be continued in April, i guess.

dustyData,

Which mouse thing? they seem to be exactly all the same inputs the Switch 1 already had.

maplebar,

They seem to be implying that you can turn the joycons on their side to use them kind of like a mouse… I guess?

At least that’s what the rumors and chatter have been saying. How practical that is… I dunno.

dustyData,

It looked like they were mimicking cars to me, not mice. Not saying that it wouldn’t be a cool concept if it has an optical sensor. But they didn’t show any visual feedback to imply they were controlling any kind of cursor. If that was the implication, it’s obvious it was a rushed marketing piece.

lunarul,

They were attached to an accessory that allowed them to slide like that. It must have a point other than just look cool on the trailer.

dustyData,

Weren’t those accessories just wrist straps?

lunarul,
PCurd,

Please excuse the screenshot of a video but this looks a lot like an optical sensor. I’ve seen a lot of internet “experts” covering this and the general consensus for now is optical sensor too.

A mouse mode could be extremely useful for things like Civilization or Fire Emblem. Of course, the touch screen is also great for that and Three Houses and Triangle Strategy didn’t support it.

    Did I offend you or something? Does your dad work for Nintendo? 🙄

    It’s a figure of speech. But let me really spell it out for you and any other fucking slowpokes in the back of the class

    I’m not impressed with the hardware or the software that they showed today. They should show more than 8 seconds of a game that looks marginally better than Mario Kart 8 (a game I bought and enjoyed 11 years ago on the Wii U) if they want to impress me and sell me on a piece of hardware that is incrementally better than the Switch they sold me 8 year ago. Hopefully they have something that will impress me when they do another presentation in April, but if not that’s cool who gives a fuck man.

    The trailer was pretty cool and I liked the bigger screen. I can’t wait to see more of what they will reveal.

    And backwards compatible games? That’s gonna be a money saver for sure!

    Hyphlosion,

    My digital copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars has been in limbo ever since I tried to transfer it from one Switch to another. Here’s hoping I can get that fixed with Switch 2.

    Assuming you mean Tears of the Kingdom (May 12 2023) and not Echoes of Wisdom just a few months ago? Sorting by release date on the eShop for first-party titles published by Nintendo since then:

    • Pikmin 4
    • F-Zero 99

    • WarioWare: Move It!
    • Super Mario RPG remake
    • Another Code: Recollection
    • Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake
    • Princess Peach: Showtime!
    • Endless Ocean Luminous
    • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door HD

    • Mario & Luigi: Brothership

    frog_brawler,

    A “not really” would have sufficed.

    missingno,
    @missingno@fedia.io avatar

    That is 22 first party releases. The answer to your question was "yes", not "not really".

    frog_brawler,

    Yikes… so that list had 21 titles on it, not 22; and there’s a good chunk of them that are remakes. The ones that aren’t sound bad - not fun. “Not really” is accurate. 22 is not accurate at all.

    missingno,
    @missingno@fedia.io avatar

    I'm counting both Pikmin ports, that's 22.

    You asked "has Nintendo even released a game?" and the answer to that question is "yes". They released 22 of them. I don't care where you wanna move the goalposts to, you can't say 22 games is "not really".

    frog_brawler,

    I guess I should have put the /s at the end of my post so that everyone wouldn’t be so offended. Fuck Nintendo and their lawsuits though, no sarcasm intended there.

    pivot_root,

    I don’t think people are upset at you calling out Nintendo for their rampant lawsuits, but instead at your dismissive reply when someone provided a list of games to answer your question.

    frog_brawler,

    Judging by the 15 downvotes on my “Has Nintendo even released a game since that second Zelda game, or are they too busy suing people?” comment, I’m not so sure. I do find this a bit amusing though.

    Back to that list though, there’s nothing on it that’s remotely appealing to me, so I guess I’m a bit biased and dismissive.

    I also do not consider ports, and remakes new releases, even if there’s a new price tag on them.

    samus12345,

    there’s nothing on it that’s remotely appealing to me, so I guess I’m a bit biased and dismissive.

    Precisely. Just because YOU don’t like them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. As far as non-remakes from that list go, I only liked Pikmin 4, Mario Wonder, and Echoes of Wisdom.

    Anivia,

    They have released a ton of games since then. Even another Zelda.

    Phanatik, (edited ) do gaming w EA's BioWare will lay off 50 and cut ties with unionized Keywords playtesting group

    Wait, when was Baldur's Gate a BioWare series? That's the first time I'm hearing about this.

    Edit: Well how about that...

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

    The previous two games, 20 years ago. It's what gave them the reputation of being a studio that made great RPGs. Then they went on to make Neverwinter Nights (another D&D game), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars with rules very close to D&D), Jade Empire, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age.

    Lunyan,
    @Lunyan@kbin.social avatar

    BioWare actually made Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 lol

    geosoco,

    1 & 2 were both bioware developed games - including their original expansions.

    Poggervania,
    @Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

    BioWare made BG 1 & 2 back in the day, and they started Dragon Age as a spiritual successor to their DnD games as I would imagine (and assume) that EA didn’t want to deal with WoTC with getting the license to a DnD game.

    So it’s kind of ironic that arguably one of the best games to come out this year is a Baldur’s Gate game as the new Dragon Age game sounds like it might be languishing in development.

    Damn, even if it's coincidental like the article suggests; those two things happening at once is NOT a good look for Bioware. Especially with BG3 being such a huge success.

    However, some slim silver lining for those being laid off is that EA/Bioware appear to be handling the situation more gracefully than others. From the article:

    McKay said that EA chose to act now to provide impacted colleagues with as many internal opportunities as possible. These changes coincide with a significant number of roles that are currently open across EA’s other studios. Impacted employees will be provided with professional resources and assistance as they apply for these positions. Those departing will receive credit in the game.

    I highlight the last part because removing people from credits is a shit thing to do and I'm glad to see them overtly state this will not be the case. Hopefully this is not just PR BS and the laid off employees get new roles quickly.

    sirspate,
    @sirspate@kbin.social avatar

    True, as long as the game isn't cancelled. Though I suppose that'd be the end of the studio if it were cancelled.

    Glaive0,

    Not gonna lie. I read that as “in-game credits” and was curious why you were lauding EA for pulling something worse than company scrip.

    The fact that this is notable tells a lot about the industry, and where major publishers can add low-stakes, low-cost value to their dev positions by just beating out others in the industry getting notoriety for being worse. It’s still good that they’re doing it, but it costs them 30 minutes of someone’s time to do something most publishers should be doing as a standard practice.

    Kidplayer_666, do games w Over 6,100 gaming jobs have been cut in 2023 (so far)

    This is semi good news. While obviously it ain’t great that people lost their jobs, there’s a good change a few of them will be like “now that I have a few months of pay, how bout I try creating that cool idea I had a while ago?”

    InfiniteLoop,

    i dunno how many actually got severance - i know i read the recent sony studio layoffs didn’t pay severance which is … worrying to put it lightly

    Pons_Aelius,

    I know I shouldn't be surprised with US labour practises but how they fuck is a company allowed to not pay severance when doing layoffs?

    InfiniteLoop,

    i wish i knew. i can tell you when i was laid off (in software), i was given an nda and non-disparagement contract that my severance was contingent upon so based on that experience, these companies consider severance a “gift”

    edit: i think it also (duh) depends on the state - many states are “employment at will”, and i would guess in those states since they can dismiss you without cause (save for discrimination), you aren’t required to pay severance. most companies still do, but i imagine the requirement wouldn’t mesh with the concept of at will employment
