Cool. Now I really want to play Smite. If only it were available without DRM.

I’m so glad the prices on M.2s have dropped. Picked up a 2TB Samsung 850 Pro for his under $100 earlier this year.

    I'm not sure the actual answer to that.

    There are some games that aren't DRM free on Steam that do go on GOG and remove the DRM. In some cases (unfortunately) the GOG version doesn't get consistently updated like the Steam version.

    It's kind of a habit for people telling you about GOG deals or promos to mention that it's DRM free whether the Steam version has DRM or not, because DRM free is the primary selling point of the store. (They also sometimes include hacks/patches to deal with compatibility with modern systems that aren't always on the Steam version.) It isn't necessarily meant to imply that any other versions have DRM (though in a lot of cases they do).

    rikudou,
    @rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

    90% of the time Steam games do have DRM. Especially the AAA titles.

    forgotaboutlaye,

    At some level, even a "DRM Free" game like The Witcher could still be argued as having DRM since you need to authenticate your purchase with steam to download it.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

    But you need to do the same on GOG, no? So that’s kind of a silly argument imo.

    Once it’s downloaded, you can copy the game directory somewhere else and never need to download it again.

    Thalfon,

    Pretty close to the same at least. The main distinction would be that the Steam version still requires a copy of Steam to be running and logged in on the computer you copy it to, which at least means Steam has to have been online once ever to get the account logged in before using offline mode. GOG has offline installers that can be backed up and used without any client.

    For the vast majority of use cases, it’s a pretty minor difference, but one way in which it might be significant is that the GOG installers will never stop working, but if one day years down the road Steam were to shut down, the Steam version could only run on computers that could be running offline-mode Steam. There’d probably be ways to break that simple bit of DRM, but a legal offline installer is a very nice bonus for things like archival sites or research applications.

    It’s the kind of thing that even if you’re not choosing to use it, it’s nice that it exists, and hopefully it can continue to.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

    I don’t think you do need Steam running. If it’s truly DRM-free, just copy the game directory to a new machine and the game will run. Don’t launch through Steam, launch it directly from the game directory.

    I’ve run games directly without Steam running on a handful of occasions, such as when someone else is using my Steam account (e.g. my kids on my other computer) and I want to play a game. I could probably play in offline mode I guess, but running it directly isn’t that hard.

    It’s not an installer, but I don’t need an installer when I already have all the game files in one directory.

    Looks like Gamepass gets to play Sep 6, so it isn’t the “premium” edition that lets you play Sep 1. Oh well another 5 days won’t kill me.

    ETA: Microsoft continues to do dumb things with pricing. Standard edition is $70, Premium edition is $100. Yikes, but ok. However, they sell a Premium edition upgrade for $35. Why does Standard + Premium upgrade cost more than Premium?

    _waffle_,
    @_waffle_@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Man, I really do not like the whole “pay more to play early” nonsense. I can wait the extra days but having to avoid the Internet will be annoying

    ChaoticGood007,

    Likely they think that the upgrade is mainly (maybe exclusively) for people playing via game pass. The $5 more is because you didn’t buy the game to start with. They did the same with FH5 when that launched I believe.

    FeelzGoodMan420,

    Nah gamepass is totally fine. It’s the thought of pre ordering that makes my brain hirt.

    dan1101,

    I’m with you on pre-ordering but GTA and Elder Scrolls games are my two exceptions. Not sure how I feel about Starfield, should be similar to an Elder Scrolls game since there is no online stuff to go wrong.

    FeelzGoodMan420,

    My whole hearted advice is to wait for reviews before ever buying a game. Therenis really absolutely zero reason to ever pre order. The pre order bonus skins or whatever are playing on your emotions. People need to resist!

    Haven’t preordered a game in at least 15 years. I preordered this one. I want that juicy September 1st playtime. Haven’t been this excited for a game since I don’t know when.

    playerwhoplayyes, do games w Minecraft's recent EULA changes place heavy restrictions on Java servers

    Some time ago, I like making my own servers in localhost, for testing plugins, configurations and more, but this is not good. Where is the freedom to make servers at your own? Well, making not p2w and not breaking obvious things, for this part:

    Servers with ANY content not suitable for 10 year olds are now prohibited

    It just problem of the parents. Also.

    Any server, piece of online content such as video or other may be taken down due to any reason whatsoever

      1. This can be regulated with plugins for chat if it is post on the chat.
      1. It’s a problem of the owners who make these decisions, they can make the server better or not.

    Haven’t been paying attention – what are we expecting from this one?

    ConditionOverload,
    @ConditionOverload@lemmy.world avatar

    Apparently will be going back to elements that were in the earlier games, with elements from the new one mixed in.

    I personally liked the open worlds they created in the last few ones.

    etchinghillside,

    Yeah, I came into this series late and enjoy the open world and leveling aspects. But had been avoiding Valhalla because I hadn’t really heard great things about it.

    ConditionOverload,
    @ConditionOverload@lemmy.world avatar

    I played a bit of Valhalla but it just took WAY too long to get into the story and I just lost interest. I love Black Flag, Origins, and Odyssey.

    Daefsdeda,

    Do you actually enjoy it? I am an old time fan and hated it. Hidden blade killing and running away was all the fun. Now you can’t instakill a dude in sneak cause he is higher level. Assassins are sneaky, not warriors. Thats my opinion at lwast.

    etchinghillside,

    Yeah, I usually pair it up with a more focused game and will switch between the two.

    If you only have a bit of time to spend you can explore a bit and obliterate some random camps. If you have more time you can progress through the story.

    I think the farthest I’ve gone back is Brotherhood and I think I can draw the line there. In hindsight I just grinded through the story because there was no pacing or anything to tell me otherwise and to go explore – so it’s partially my fault. Also, the last area was a buggy jump puzzle - screw that.

    Daefsdeda,

    I just really dislike the lvling. Makes the open world feel linear and I find that hidden blading someone should be instakill.

    I was in a way overlevel area in origins and sneaked so fricking hard that I could hidden blade the boss. My disappointment was immeasurable when it didn’t instakill…

    etchinghillside,

    I still have Unity in the backlog to play and wouldn’t mind another playthrough of Black Flag.
