Blazingtransfem98,
@Blazingtransfem98@discuss.online avatar

Valve hasn’t openly stated they are like 4chan though, they may correct it if pressured since it wasn’t their explicit goal to be a right-wing safe haven. Maybe it is but they haven’t been open about it yet. 4chan is a lost cause when it comes to this, same as kiwifarms. They do not care and will not budge. Valve might since they need Governemnts not to ban them or publishers not to pull out else they lose money.

_cryptagion,

And 4chan has already been the recipient of government scrutiny, including a lawsuit attempting to shut them down.

It’s somehow not on the list? That’s actually unbelievable

Vodulas,

Good, because it is number 90

frank,

I’m an idiot, no clue how I missed that

Vodulas,

Nah, it is a long list. I missed Dishonored 2 on there.

Vodulas, do gaming w PC Gamer: The top 100 PC games

KOTOR 2 on the list instead of KOTOR is an odd choice, but I do not hate it. With the missing content mod, that game is great

TommySalami,

I prefer 2 to 1, primarily because the choices are not as blatantly good/evil and it feels like they have more impact. I also think the character creation and items are more fleshed out. Just a shame it didn’t get the polish it deserved at launch. 1 definitely feels more “Star Wars”-y, though.

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

Their entire list is odd choices except for the top 10 (even persona 5 is iffy as top 10 of all time)

They favor shooters and then place a game that had lost most of its audience in under a year as the best shooter other than doom 1 of all time.

I love helldivers, but it is a very niche game in comparison to so many others, even those on the list.

Not to mention KOTOR and DA:O as 94 and 95. Also prey is an extremely weird choice…

Vodulas,

Prey kinda kicked off the immersive genre. I think the thing folks are not getting is that this is not a best game of all time list, even though they say “100 best.” It is a “100 Favorite Games of the PC Gamer Staff” list. It is going to be different than anyone’s exact taste. There are a ton of games on there that I think would not be in my top 100, but I am not mad or confused about it. It’s just something someone else is into.

Nuke_the_whales, do games w Nintendo's lawsuit against Palworld isn't just bad for the industry, it's bad for Nintendo

I don’t understand. So if I make a video game and my main character is an Italian plumber who wears red and blue, jumps on mushroom people and grows when he eats a mushroom, and Nintendo sues me. Nintendo is wrong? Or are we pretending palworld isn’t “Pokemon with guns” which was literally what people were pushing it as

ayyy,

Step 1: learn the difference between trademarks and patents. Then we can have a meaningful discussion.

Nuke_the_whales,

Oh I’m sorry Lemmy lawyer. I didn’t know we needed a law degree to comment on threads

ayyy,

That’s not what I said at all. I gave you very helpful information to put you on the path of understanding this case.

x00za,

The problem is that the fans of Palworld are actually fans of Pokemon and they will defend it like a Pokemon game.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

the problem is, palworld isn’t “pokemon with guns”, they used that slogan originally sure, but palworld 100% shows more similar mechanics and concepts to ark then pokemon, it’s a mix of pokemon style mechanics and Arks RPG mechanics. I would say they had a stronger suit against trademark than they did mechanics side.

The only game mechanic similarity between the two is the ball capture system and the fact that it’s called a trainer/leader when you battle the NPC’s anything else is already present in other games.

By this logic, any game that features the ability to tame or capture monsters would be a pokemon clone. That’s far too broad of a category to allow as a patent if challenged. I personally believe it will result in them losing the patent as a whole if it is that patent they are fighting with.

Nuke_the_whales,

Anyways, it’s very very clear what game palworld took it’s creature design from. So I don’t think the lawsuit is as silly as the Nintendo haters insist

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

that would be a trademark or copyright suit not a patent suit. Patents are strictly mechanics, they didn’t sue on design, I agree I think they had a better case on that, but the Nintendo lawyers decided otherwise

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

In the US, Atari tried to sue someone who made an Asteroids clone back in 1981 and lost because Meteors, the clone had made some improvements on the idea of Asteroids (color, among other things). This cemented US legal precedent that you can’t sue people for “ripping off” games so long as they make some meaningful change to it and aren’t just making a direct knock-off.

This current case is in Japan, however, where the legal landscape is very different and companies need to be legally aggressive to maintain any rights to their IP from what I understand. I have no idea how that’s going to go down.

morphballganon,

“Catch creatures to use to fight” is a broad enough theme that it should be fair use, and has other precedent. For example, it was done in Bomberman Generation. Why didn’t Nintendo sue Konami?

Buttflapper, do games w 'AI is coming for all of us:' Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid, and Baldur's Gate voice actor Jennifer Hale weighs in on SAG-AFTRA's games industry strike

The only protection we could possibly have HAS to be implemented by the government, look how Germany handles their workforce. They have a worker’s council, you can’t just lay off people or fire tons of people nope. Workers are protected. Here in the USA, people are just servants, building pyramids, and then tossed to the street.

My idea: if a company employs over 50 employees, it should be ILLEGAL to outsource any job overseas, or replace them with AI. Example, voice actors. Should not be legal. Small studios / indie, should be perfectly legal since these are individuals that struggle to get started.

frezik,

Unions can organize without the government having any protections. It’s very difficult to organize that way. It’s difficult to organize even with the most union-friendly government imaginable. But either way, it can be done.

Unions in the US have been shot by police at before. Hard to have less government protection than that.

Adalast,

Your idea is one of the specific reasons many companies try to label everyone as an “independent contractor”. Especially people like voice actors are not “employees”, and thus do not count as such for your idea.

Buttflapper,

Yeah, and unions would change that. Negotiating to ensure that people are hired as full-time employees with benefits, not as independent contractors or consultants with no rights, and finally be treated as human beings.

JeeBaiChow, do games w 'AI is coming for all of us:' Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid, and Baldur's Gate voice actor Jennifer Hale weighs in on SAG-AFTRA's games industry strike

Is it the voice that makes the character, though? Can I take any middle aged Stanley type from the office and get the ai to place the voice as the next Taylor swift? Is it then actually the original character/ actor? Why not just synthesize the looks according to whatever teenage adolescent fantasy the marketing department wants and fully program the character, i.e. a fully artificial actor, instead of basing it off some persons looks? The former cannot possibly have legal repercussions, but if the latter, by all means, protect the actors rights and likeness from abuse.

I think the studios still need the actors to perform the characters, because the ais can’t emote. But once they can, it’s over for the actors

I’m keeping an open mind, but it’s going to take a loooooot of positive word of mouth to get me to even think about picking DA up again.

azerial,

Did you not like DAI? I liked DAI (and worked on it some), but that was a much different BioWare. I was lucky to not work for BioWare when they shit canned the whole Austin office and sold Star Wars: The Old Republic to Broadsword. I heard a loud of BioWare people also left, but what are you doing to do in the shit hole that Edmonton is? Not many options I’ve heard. Though I’ve also heard there are some small studios in Edmonton that have spun off, as they always do.

As someone who has worked directly with that team I’m hopeful but also hoping it’s not another dumpster fire like Anthem was. I could go on forever about that project.

edit: small Edmonton studios

sundray,

I loved Inquisition’s story, acting, and art. The moment to moment gameplay, exploration, and combat didn’t click with me though, and I found it a challenge to finish. The thought of slogging through area after area kind of makes my heart sink. But I appreciate the hard work that goes into game creation, no shade on the team.

azerial, (edited )

Lol you can have shade. Nobody is perfect, for example: do you know what a Gold Master is? It’s the final copy of the game that is written on the disk. It’s also the reason why when you buy a game, the patch is gigantic. It’s an out of date build of the game, really really important, and has to be certified by both Microsoft and Sony. (Called the certificatation process) It takes months, but production can’t stop, thus the patch.

The dragon age team, for DAI, built this super important build on a QAs desktop. Why might this be bad you ask? Because it’s an uncontrolled system that’s not clean and is connected to the Internet. Thank God they didn’t have a virus or malware, because it could’ve been written to millions of disks. Lol

It’s the same reason why, initially, the first Star Wars: The Old Republic launcher installed in a user folder named “hedev”. Users were like who the fuck is hedev? Lol that was a coding bug and less of a build mistake but still. (I fixed that bug. Now they use a much much better launcher, went from version 2.6 to version 6.x). I miss that team, they’re rockstars.

The details matter.
