Ehh… lack of user reviews are exactly what made OpenCritic better than MetaCritic.
It will probably just end up the same as MetaCritic. Where anyone, including people who never played the game, can leave reviews. And it’ll sooner or later just degrade into yet another review-bombing platform where you’ll find absolutely nothing constructive in the user reviews (both negative and positive review spam).
Also, walling the user score details behind a forced registration is just shit tier level.Apparently that’s just to post reviews, can’t see individual user reviews yet I think(?)
I’m curious what argument the people that are just downvoting comments in this thread actually have. These days nothing good comes from gaming platforms that have user reviews. It’s just a cesspool of haters, trolls and fanboys circlejerking over 0s or 10s and hardly anything constructive and unbiased in between.
There is the summary of the review notes and the evolution over time. Then there is the text comments associated to the notes which is sorted by helpfulness. To me this is a good system and by browsing 2-3 pages of reviews I think I get an accurate idea. I think I never got misleaded by a game with overwhelming positive reviews rating. Of course there are still players with 1000 hours in the games giving 0 stars review with comment « this game bad » but there are also plenty of useful reviews.
When I see a game on sales on the Epic store, I first go to the steam reviews before deciding. I don’t think I’m the only one doing that.
I’ve found that Steam reviews are especially useless for visual novels and games with anime girls. I am open to the concept of a visual novel, and really enjoy the Ace Attorney games, but maintain 99.9% of them are trash, with none of their excess dialog trimmed down. They all have reviews saying Overwhelmingly Positive though, because anyone who would take the chance to try that genre - a small segment of people - will enjoy it.
I also really wish Steam would implement a Helpfulness system for Guides, since most games have Guide pages that are just filled with meme posts, eg; “How 2 win: Pick OP character, enjoy victory”.
Tbf PD2 was the same way yet I had tons of fun with it. At some point the horde shooting is just about overall performance and resource management, not combat itself, while the main gameplay is doing the objective alongside it. I preferred going with stealth most of the times anyway.
That being said, if the objectives sucks and combat is unchanged then there's nothing to make it actually fun and yeah, that's an issue.
Never understood the appeal of a game purportedly about bank robberies being mostly about killing literally hundreds of cops, it’s not so much unrealistic as it is completely farcical. It would be like Al Qaeda flying a plane into the WTC and everybody in New York going about their business like normal the next day.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the living proof that - at least as far as RPGs are concerned - absolutely nothing happened in the last fifteen to twenty years of gaming. Make one good AAA RPG and people lose their minds over it. I mean it certainly is better than the slob Bethesda served up in the last two decades.
Absolutely love this game. Its a real gem for people that like puzzles and detective stuff. BUT i have had multiple times where a case was unsolvable because of a bug. Which is incredibly frustrating because you never know if its bugged or you’re just overlooking something.
Game looks like some chill fun if / when I end up in the mood for an open world game. Sounds like some technical issues need to get ironed out so seems like a good pick up on sale game for me
right there with you. I saw some gameplay footage yesterday and thought it looked like great videogame junk food, especially if you’re a Star Wars mark like me. I just finished Fallen Order, and tbh I think the comparisons are spot on. The most notable similarity is both protagonists having a shoulder-perched sidekick that is responsible for like a quarter of your moveset. I think it’s neat in this game, but if we get ANY other Star Wars game in the next decade that has a shoulder-perched companion like this, it’s gonna feel really stale.
Yeah, same. And man, I loved homeworld. Even spent too much money on that remastered collection with the mothership model when I was in college and shouldn’t have done it. But nah, not gonna buy an unfinished game.
I still dont believe that this game is as bad as people want to make it and I’m quiet surprised that my youtube timeline is full of spoilers for it (and I only watched Skillup’s video, so I dont know where this is coming from), as in people want to actually ruin the game for everyone. I think I will pick it up as soon as I’m done with Guild Wars 2 which, let’s be honest here, will be never…
Fun story but don’t expect much more out of it. Solid 7.
I must say I had more fun with some of these 7 out of 10’s than with any Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption or Elden Ring. So nothing wrong in getting a 7 out of 10.
I tend to prefer clicking through the unscored reviews first since I find that it’s generally a mark of a quality outlet. Rock Paper Shotgun in particular is an old favorite of mine, so their’s is the first review that I clicked on and let me tell you guys: it’s a real firecracker!
Matt clearly didn’t have a good time and I had to respectfully disagree with a lot of the points he’s made, but even so… his points are well-articulated and sensible. I’m rather glad for his uncommon perspective on the topic and I do think that RPS ultimately picked the right writer for the job. He hasn’t particularly changed my mind about a day-one purchase, of course – the main difference is now I’ll have a more nuanced and realistic expectation for what’s inside.
Mm, “it plays itself” is a common, reductive argument against turn-based combat that I don’t think is helpful.
Otherwise, I think this review is mostly okay for those new to the series (or the genre). Saying that he had a motivated start is interesting, as the story’s notoriously slow start is a frequent complaint about the earlier versions (and the series in general).
It’s good to see a new player in the mix, though the reviewers who are familiar enough with the original games to outline what is missing were the most valuable to me. The missing content makes this a “wait for a sale” purchase for me.
I took his criticisms of the combat as basically saying “this system is not interesting enough to form a satisfying gameplay loop”. That’s a critical statement which I actually agree with, though from my perspective that’s a key part of Persona’s core design: neither the combat system nor the social link system are endlessly enjoyable, so the player is intrinsically motivated to avoid lingering for too long and properly close the core gameplay loop by advancing the calendar. It’s that sort of pendulum-like cadence which gives the series its unique sense of momentum.
I do think that it’s a shame RPS’s Matt was unable to find joy in P3R’s gameplay loop due to disliking the social-link system… but I also see it as an opportunity to better understand the game as a holistic package in a way that can’t be achieved through a more carefully measured, quantitative analysis. The way I see things, the game is the game – I’m much more interested in understanding what’s in the game rather than what’s not, if that makes any sense.
Yeah same. I disagree with a whole lot, but it’s refreshing to see that perspective, and in a lot of ways that tells me much more how the rework is (knowing the base game) than the more “positive” reviews.
I’m just sad. When I first played payday 2 it was on my crappy laptop. I had to turn everything to its lowest (even resolution) and turn off my internet (this really made it playable). I am sad to see that some kid will not be able to do the same one day.
