In case anyone is wondering, the game is called “Norman Reedus and the magic fetus”.

Funny. But it’s actually called “Skyrim”.

Was a great interactive movie.

Ledivin,

Yeah, you definitely have to go into the game with the right expectations. I loved it, but I was also in the perfect headspace for a very slow, chill experience.

Jrockwar,

Ooooh this sounds like my sort of game. I love visual novels and things like that, I really enjoyed GTA V because of the story (the dialogs are downright hilarious). I might give DS a try then.

magic_lobster_party,

DS is like if Eurotruck Simulator had a story mode. And it’s about ghosts and babies.

CptEnder,

Lmao I’m just trying to picture demons trying to catch me but I’m too busy trying to decide which axel configuration I want.

Thassodar,

I don’t know about chill. The first 5 minutes:

!Yo the president wants to see you. Oh BTW the president is your mother. Oh and she’s dying. Oh and once she dies you have to take her body to this spot so that everyone doesn’t die. Tomorrow? No right fucking now. !<

I couldn’t get into it, and I’ve beaten every MGS, so I know how weird stuff can get. I’ll have to give it another shot one day, but it was not clicking with me.

gamermanh,

Nah, that’s not the insane rush, that’s actually a really chill first mission to help you get into the swing of them

The opening where you run down a big hill and then a cutscene where a bunch of shadow creatures attack and kill some guys really horribly and then a big explosion goes off and kills your character but the baby in his throat stops sucking it’s thumb so he can be reborn

“Get the presidents body the fuck out of here” makes perfect sense and looks tame as shit after THAT

Thassodar,

I can imagine there’s some crazy shit in the game, being from Kojima, but it’s one of those games where I’ll have to come back to it in a better state of mind. Maybe I was too baked to enjoy it at the time.

gamermanh,

Oh it’s for sure a trip, I fucking loved MGS but I have yet to actually finish DS, despite reading up on the lore and loving that I figured out some of the big twists before episode 3 by sheer Kojima pattern recognition

Its a dense game that’s surprisingly taxing on your brain as you move around, then it slaps you with deeply metaphorical bullshit while your burnt out to confuse you extra

Ookami38,

It really was a slow burn. I had to progress through 4 or 5 story missions before it really clicked for me. Probably around the time I got >!the first exoskeleton!<. The story starts to do its kojima thing and sucking you in with weird questions, and the gameplay finally starts to feel like you’re making a decision instead of just on rails.

Good game, good game.

I never played Death Stranding. Maybe 2025, love the concept!

Saff,

It was a fun chill game til the scary ghosts got involved…

egrets,
@egrets@lemmy.world avatar

The gameplay was fun (though I agree about the ghosts), but I found the writing obnoxious. Super melodramatic and weirdly absurdist, but at the same time really quite tedious.

ByteOnBikes,

A bit later in the game, you can kill the ghosts. I think you get their weapon right after.

state_electrician,

I got bored and read up the plot and decided that I’m good and then picked up another game.

ByteOnBikes,

Same. The intro is long like any Kojima game.

Then I tried it a year later and forced myself past the 5 hour mark.

Then another five hours.

Then 40+ hours later, I realized I do love this game. This really stupidly weird game.

Ookami38,

This was my experience. I bounced off it a few times, then finally got some of the interesting gear, then realized I had >!reconnected a player-built Zipline section in the last area of the game!<, was nearing its end, and I didn’t wanna leave the world quite yet hahah.

One of the few open-world games that I enjoyed just existing in, doing the menial busy-work. Growing attached to my carts as Norman Reedus grows attached to BB… Such a bizarre experience.

One thing I forgot to ask last post was the music, in particular the between-chapter songs. They were all written specifically for the game by various artists based on poems about the story Sam Lake gave them. I’ve seen lots of streamers just immediately skip and go to the next chapter, but I really recommend listening through each song. They’re all amazing, and it kind of makes me sad it didn’t get the award for best music.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I always listen to the music. With the way remedy is it plays such a vital part in it that i would be caught dead before skipping them. It may be nostalgia bias for the first one but particularly Poet of The Fall’s Heroes and Villains was my favorite, RAKEL’s Follow You Into The Dark knocked it out of the park too.

spoilerThen there was this stage at the end, which was playing a remix of Departure from the first game which i would by lying if i said it didn’t make me sad and nostalgic https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/28ddf0f5-4328-4b0d-bbca-32d7df97aae2.png

Then there was a segment in the game that used the same music from the first episode of Alan Wake I, and that to me felt really clever because of the parallels too it. Overall i feel like remedy knocked it out of the park in all departments, and the music especially was no exception.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Totally. And between stuff like the stage fight in AW1, the Ashtray Maze in Control and We Sing in AW2 Remedy has gotten so damn good at integrating music and gameplay too.

I personally was blown away by POE - This Road as well. The track is mesmerising and every time a new variation on it played after an Alan chapter I had almost goosebumps. I still regularly go back and listen to the whole 9 minute track on YouTube.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely. The way Remedy executes the stage moments doesn’t feel too out of place either. I feel like it would be hard to execute that in a horror game in a way that doesn’t take you out of the moment, yet remedy keeps doing it over and over again

I’m avoiding reading this thread as I don’t want spoilers but I didn’t really enjoy the first one that much and dropped out before finishing. I hear a lot about 2 though, is it worth playing the first one in order to play 2?

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I would say it is worth playing the first one because it builds off of the ending and a lot of the plot exposition in it. I do think 2 does a decent job of explaining things quickly to newcomers, but if you have the time I’d say playing the first one is a good idea to get the full picture

I loved control, it had so many unique ideas. i only got halfway through though before having to delete it to make space though sadly. With my playthrough of Alan Wake II i think i want to dedicate myself to going back and finishing it soon though

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I have yet to beat it myself. The first time I played it, I eventually came across a boss fight that proved too tough, and the only way to level up Jesse was to go and fight random spawns around the building. I got tired of the grind and stopped playing it. But I’m hoping to actually play through to the end this time around. I plan to do all spawn events as they come this time, instead of skipping them to focus on moving the plot forward, so that I’ll be better prepared for that fight when it comes.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

That was part of the same issue i had as well, i kept having to put it on hold for a tough boss. I hope your able to see it through to the end this time!

I am now reading every goddamn one of these you write. If only the other screenshot posters would put forth your respect and effort, we could have an honest gaming journal going.

GriffinClaw,

Honestly? I like both the screenshot poster.

The current OP’s posts I tend to skim over, (unless its a game I already played, like this one) cause spoilers. . The other poster has less spoilery posts that I like to read more often (specially the ones he plays with his friends). . To each there own¯_(ツ)_/¯

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you! I try to avoid spoilers in mine. I usually use Lemmy’s built in spoiler feature when it’s though inevitable or i really want to share it, but i just recently found out that not every client does spoilers the same way so i think i’ll have to think up some other idea

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I usually give a warning in advance that spoilers are upcoming and to skip the next paragraph if you don’t want to read them, then do the spoiler tag for an entire paragraph. That way, even if the spoiler tag doesn’t work, people know to skip the next paragraph to avoid it. Sometimes I’ll even do a full-caps “END OF SPOILERS HERE” to catch eyes and help people skip over them.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what I ended up doing for my Alan Wake II post last night because there was just a lot to talk about with the ending. I figured in clients that don’t support Lemmy’s built in spoiler system though the ::: at the end will tell them where the spoilers end

cobysev, (edited )
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I’m actually very careful to avoid spoilers in my posts. Sure, I get pretty far into the meat of the gameplay before I end my post… but I do my best to avoid any big reveals that might ruin the game for interested players. And I’ve never revealed the ending to a game.

At best, I’ve posted my speculation for the direction a game’s plot might be headed, based on my incomplete gaming session. But I made it clear it was just a personal guess.

My intent is to get people invested in the story, so when I leave off, they’ll want to go check it out and see what happens next. Besides, some of the best screenshots are from the action in the middle of gameplay. I can’t play 15 mins of a game and expect to make a solid post about it; I need to have some sense of what the game is about, and that requires a bit more exploration into the plot.

Since you’re familiar with Control, you’ll probably notice I left out some pretty big details from nearly the start of the game. You gotta have some unknown plot elements, or else I’m just narrating the first hour of the game, and that’s not fun when you actually go to play it for the first time.

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think I’ve posted this here yet, but I’ve actually been compiling all these posts into a separate blog. As much time and effort as I’ve been putting into them, I’d hate for them to get wiped if this community goes down, or heaven forbid, I got booted by a mod, etc. So you can either follow my posts here in /c/games, or check them out on my blog. I upload them at the same time, so it doesn’t matter where you go to read them.

I missed that you’ve started on Alan Wake 2 now, but I’m glad you’ve got it running somewhat acceptably! It’s a very demanding game, when I first played it I didn’t have my new PC so I’m intimately familiar with struggling to be able to run it.

I’m glad you spotted the signs, I love the work on all the signs and graffiti in the dark place.

How are you liking the game so far?

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Loving it. I played a little bit on launch but put it on the shelf due to the performance (hoping updates would help) and I felt a little iffy on it due to how Alan was portrayed and the far more survival horror like gameplay. But since picking it up again it’s grown on me. I think if put against the First One/American Nightmare I don’t think I could pick a favorite. I love both for different reasons

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

It’s become one of my favourite games of all time, I think it’s a masterpiece. I love the Remedy connected universe, and as someone who played and loved Max Payne back in the day I got a huge nostalgia kick from the cameos in AW2. When you first see Casey in the Max Payne 1 outfit I squealed.

I also think Alice’s actress is absolutely killing it and am surprised she didn’t get more recognition.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

up until recently Alan Wake was the only Remedy game i played. I picked up control and loved it and then recently played through Max Payne. I think it’s evolved from Alan Wake being my favorite game too Remedy being my favorite game studio. It makes me excited seeing how all these things connect together.
