terminhell, do gaming w Avowed plays like a funny Obsidian role-player where you buddy up with the voice of Mass Effect's Garrus [Eurogamer]

Been waiting years for this. The original games are super underrated.

Pillars of Eternity? Are they considered underrated?

The first one did pretty well as far as I remember.

My only personal complaint was that the game was too lineary.

terminhell,

Overall yes they did well, but it seems like they fell off. Poe1 has the better narrative imo. 2 had better mechanics.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

So they aren’t underrated. Just low replayability value.

And if Avowed is part of the series, I’d say the IP’s doing fine. Three installments is pretty good.

terminhell,

If it came across as talking bad about the game/franchise thats not the intent. It’s just rarely mentioned in the crpg mainstream articles I’ve seen over time. Usually Divinity and others are brought up more often.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

No no, I just see “Underrated” used a lot about things that really aren’t underrated. It’s become a bit of a pet peeve for me. (Like when someone calls REM an underrated band. Like, they are world renowned. They’re just old and broken up.)

And I’m also pointing out a likely reason for them not being talked about as much as other titles in the same genre. Aside from going through the game with different roles, the first game just doesn’t have a lot of replay value. Not a lot of ‘Choice & Consequence’ or things to discover. There’s your Char and what God you choose to side with in the end. That’s kinda it.

Good games, but not exactly riveting.

I forgot that they were making this. I just checked the trailer, and it surprisingly doesn't look terrible. As far as video game adaptations go these days, this actually seems pretty true to the source material.

I imagine it'll be one of those movies that's terrible for general audiences, but will probably be well-received among its niche. As a huge fan of the first two Borderlands games, it looks solid and I actually want to watch this.

Don_Dickle,

just downloaded it am very excited to watch it.

Uh… What? Look at the casting- Roland should be a straight-man (in comedy terms) but they’ve cast Kevin Hart to tell his typically unfunny cracks. And while I love Kate Blanchett she is not a good fit to play Lilith

Chozo,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about some of the casting as I'm kinda tired of seeing Kevin Hart and Jack Black in everything lately (I'm surprised I didn't see The Rock in the trailer somewhere, to be honest), but the overall feel of the trailer seems to match the energy that the games had. I'm not saying it's 1:1 accurate by any means, but the trailer definitely manages to feel like Borderlands. I imagine the writers for the movie didn't want anybody from the main group to feel like a "downer" character, so Roland's probably being reworked a bit.

I'm okay with it so far, at least. It's generally pretty hard to make the "strong, quiet type" very interesting, especially for a movie format where you have limited screen time that has to be shared among a lot of characters. You can make that sort of character interesting, like in No Country For Old Men, but you have to dedicate a lot of time to it, and that's not easily done with a story that has so many characters with their own stories to tell.

I dunno, I'm just remaining optimistic. I want to like this movie.

Hexadecimalkink,

Have to disagree. The games and the trailer are very far apart.

Could you even send the controller data through DisplayPort? I thought that was just for picture.

chloyster,

Yeah I think the display port plugs into the headset and that’s the picture data. The controller data is via Bluetooth

SweetCitrusBuzz, do gaming w The future of Twitch: safety, growth, and the importance of finding community
@SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org avatar

Twitch hasn’t been about community in a long time, ever since they removed the friends feature and started gatekeeping most communication behind handing over a phone number.

Never forget this, they can’t be both, they try so hard to pretend that they are but they’re a business first and foremost, not a place to find actual community, if they were they wouldn’t also have any adverts or ask you for money to have all the features real communities let you have for free.

rottingleaf, do games w Devs should not be "forced to run on a treadmill until their mental or physical health breaks", says publisher of Manor Lords, citing how gamers seem to be trained to expect endless content work now

I remember a few games which didn’t require such sacrifices from developers.

Some even commercial. Like NWN, with people making their own campaigns without, you know, any effort spent by the developers of the game itself.

Of course when the business model is milking players and making it problematic (either technically or by paradigm) to satisfy interest with community-made modifications, then all the load is on the devs or else the game becomes irrelevant. Well, guess whose fault that is.
